The same way that Keith Richards is still alive?

With the amount of substance abuse he's been doing throughout his life, it'll take at least a year for him to get all the drugs and booze out of his system.

My name is Buttknuckle and I'm an alcoholic and a drug addict.

Today, I am 13 days sober!  It's tough.  One day at a time and lots of meetings.  Was sober for a year and a half before relapsing last April.  Decided a year was enough and decided to start anew a year to the day.

If it wasn't for Sharon, he'd would have been dead of an overdose a LONG time ago.

He'll be dead shortly after.  The shock to the body would be fatal.  Sometimes you just have to ride the train until the last stop.

Maybe so, but as someone pointed out in another thread a few days ago, she was perfectly happy to deal with the drugs as long as he was her meal ticket. Now that she's fine on her own, NOW it bothers her? I think it shows who she really is.

unless he was taking huge amounts of downers or drinking bottles a day of liquor, he can come out of it alive.

Well that, plus other bigger factors like age and completely different musicians. I just hope he doesn't fark up all the new Sabbath songs, because Tony Iommi always brings it.

I seem to remember a story a while back where some genetic researchers had discovered that Ozzy had some carry-over DNA/genes from neanderthals that allowed him to tolerate alcohol better than others.  I don't remember why they were studying Ozzy's DNA, but I remember thinking "well that explains a lot".

Really though, if he were the kind of person to OD on something, he'd have never made it out of the 80's.

Congrats on that!  I fortunately don't have issues with alcohol, but whenever I read something like that it really makes me want to quit smoking again.  For good.

Congrats, way to go! I've been sober since July 20, 2004. It's still tough at times, but it got better after my fifth year. I feel like a "non-drinker" now, instead of a "recovering" anything.

They mapped his genome to attempt to understand why he's still alive.  He's one of the few humans to have had his entire genome completely mapped out.  They found that he has a genetic predisposition to addiction but he also has a genetic predisposition to resisting its effects.  And they discovered that he has some Neanderthal DNA, which he thought was funny (the founder of the genetic mapping company had three times as much Neanderthal DNA, amusingly.).

He's old, hobbled, and bored.  Let him have his fun.  It's not like he needs to be at his desk by 9.

Thanks, Man.  People like you give us relapsers some hope.  Its funny how people are baffled and don't understand alcoholics/addicts, and how we are equally confused how someone can drink socially and not have an issue.

Only an addict truly understands it. (note alcoholic is just a subset of addict). That's why meetings can be helpful, if you can get over all that preachy stuff. At least they understand it.

So true!  That was my demise the last time - I stopped going to meetings.  Too many gratitude meetings where people talked about how they see the beauty in flowers and shiat since they got sober.  I quickly developed a huge resentment against the entire fellowship/organization.  I tried everything else in the meantime and nothing else seems to work.  So now, I'm doing the deal and taking things piecemeal.

I "relapsed" twice before the latest run  Each time, I had about a year sober then started up, each time harder than before. By 2004, I was getting very sick and ended up in the hospital. I knew that the game was over, and I've been sober ever since. I think that accepting what I am was helpful: I (and you) have some genetic issue that makes me/us what we are. We're born addicts.

As far as the "gratitude/smelling the flowers" thing: I'm exactly the same as I was, for better or worse. However, I don't throw up every day, I now throw up maybe once every two years. I don't miss much work, no need to. I don't lie often since I have very little to lie about. I eat out more, since before I wanted to drink until I was too wasted to go to a restaurant.

I don't do meetings (I'm not advising anyone to go or don't go). Instead, I try to keep busy as being bored is a danger. When I had about 3 years sober, I was really bored and went to the store and had a bottle of vodka in my hand. It was a store that had lots of stuff (Marcs, in OH) and I saw a stupid model plane there. I put the vodka down and bought the model, glue and some paint. I was 43 at the time. I built the model and it came out really shiatty, but it kept me busy that day and saved my butt. Best of luck to you.

I hear a lot of flack in Black Sabbath/Ozzy threads about about Ozzy not being a good singer,
so here's this:

When she married him he was totally broke, fired from BS, owed his first wife most of his money and had a giant drug habit. Not exactly a goldigger's best choice. If you've read anything about her father, he was a psychopath, which probably explains her attraction to Ozzy. Sharon is a lot of things but I wouldnt say goldigger is one of them. She made Ozzy's fortune for him.

Yeah, but Lemmy isn't a man, he's a god.  A god fueled by Jack Daniel's and crystal meth.
