I don't really have strong feelings one way or another for Rangers or Celtic, and I think it's unfortuante it'll be a few years before another real Old Firm match, but it amuses me a little that Rangers are now playing in venues like this (not a knock against Annan either).

Props to Man U; I thought their central midfield was EASILY the worst among the top handful of serious contenders going into the season..and, well, the rest of their team is so strong that it didn't matter.

What are they going to do with Chicharito this offseason? They have a glut of forwards that all deserve playing time.

Some want to move south, certainly. It's for purely mercenary reasons. There's much, much more money in the English leagues. It's not going to happen, not so long as the FA maintain that membership is only open to clubs in England and Wales.

Which is perfectly fine with me. My allegiance is not for sale and I am perfectly happy to watch my Scottish team continue to play in Scotland forever. Because it's home and quite frankly English football leaves me cold. It's become so overblown and so dominated by money that I can't help but to think that some of the life in it has gone. I'm sure it's purely emotional and irrational but in all truth I am more than happy to see us playing the likes of Dundee United and Aberdeen week in and week out and don't want to lose that, not even for a big payout and a higher calibre of competition. If anything, I want to see Scottish football grow and improve as a whole.

And maybe, one day, if fortune smiles upon us and miracles can happen, we might even have a national team that is slightly less than completely shiat.

Except FC United of Manchester. They're a great club and a brilliant set of fans who are exactly what football should always be about.

I'll also step up here. I said that if RvP had four seasons like last year's season, then Manchester United got value--a bargain, even. But if his production slowed down, or if he got injured (as we was repeatedly at Arsenal), then Manchester United overpaid.

As far as this season goes, Manchester United got a good bargain. But again, it's a four-year contract. Van Persie might continue in that form, or he may end up on the bench for £220K/wk for a few years. More time will bear that out. At the moment, though, Manchester United won the league and fair play to them. They earned it.

I may or may have not have uttered "meh, Huntelaar scored 11 more goals than RvP last season, Man U signed the wrong Dutch guy" during a fit of drunken bitterness.

RvP will get the plaudits for "making the difference", but it was really Michael Carrick that anchored this team throughout the winter run that saw them extend the lead at the top.

To be fair, I'm friends with a few dozen Dutchies and many of them rank Huntelaar higher than RVP.

I'm pretty sure I said RvP was a good pickup, but I had my doubts he could repeat his once in a lifetime season. Turns out he didn't need to really. Plus the last time we saw him on a big stage, he was shiatting it up in EURO 2012, so one can be forgiven if you though he wasn't going to cut the mustard.

I've heard a few people say that too, but I don't quite get it. From what I've seen, Huntelaar is very crafty poacher but not the overall player RvP is when healthy & engaged.

True. They have a surplus of great long passers (especially with Rooney dropping back into midfield), but lack players who can run with the ball at their feet and terrify defenders. Giggs occasionally can turn it on. Nani thinks he can, but he can't. Maybe Kagawa can become that. By comparison, Man City are very rich in that role. That's why I think somebody like Bale (won't happen) or Modric (currently warming a bench somewhere sunny, last time I checked) would be a great pickup.

What are they going to do with Chicharito this offseason? They have a glut of forwards that all deserve playing time.

This is also true. The cynic in me says that Chicharito is worth his salary for the transatlantic merchandising sales even if he rarely gets a start. They also have Angelo Henriquez on the books, Macheda out on loan, and Zaha, who can also play striker, arriving in the summer.

Maybe Chicharito stays and Welbeck goes while he's still worth a lot of money? And Macheda too: SAF has a knack for spotting when a promising young player isn't fulfilling his promise, and shipping them out before it's too late.

I'm convinced Bayern would actually be better w/o Robben. And Bayern signing Goetz is aggravating. Why is the only good European league that actually cares about parity throwing it away? Do they want Bayern to clinch the title in February?

I'm glad to hear some one else say that. I think Germany has the best league structure in the world. While looking into just how much parity there is in MLS I decided to check season-over-season correlation between MLS, The Premiership, and the Bundesliga. Despite everything MLS has establish to foster parity among the league, theres even more parity in the Bundesliga. The Premiership, on the other hand, is more or less decided on Day 1 of the season.

If you plot previous season final position against next season final position (ignoring newly promoted or relegated teams), the R^2 correlation for the leagues are :

Bundesliga : 0.09
MLS : 0.17
Premiership : 0.56

Germany has a great model going and I hope the balance continues as it really fosters an entertaining environment.

So much THIS. By my estimate, they've tossed away 6 matches in the last 5 minutes, matches that either ended in ties (-2 points) or losses (-3 points). They're in Europe otherwise, but also Moye's insistence on trotting out the scrubs for Carling Cup and FA Cup matches is debatable. Winning the FA Cup = automatic Europa League place, which is about where Everton should be; the last Champions League campaign was a total disaster.

sob

This. Though, to be fair, it's not been relegation battles the last few years, so there's that.

/Yeah, mid-table mediocrity!
