But that website is 10 different kinds of fundie-christian crazy, so I'll just choose to hate all sides in this argument.

Yup. Christians do nothin' but run around silencing people who have different beliefs, like this crew, for example. Look how they cruelly oppress those Muslim students.

Fatties are disgusting.
Religious people are like children with an imaginary friend.
Republicans are sociopaths.

Should what I just said be illegal?

Then why have a first amendment, if all you're allowed to do is agree with everyone else?

Since its LifeSiteNews and it includes this quote:

"Two students, neither of whom is Catholic (one belongs to some faux Catholic entity and the other is an agnostic Jew), are not only attempting to oust Father Shaffer," said Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, said, "they are seeking to effectively neuter the very purpose of the Newman Center, which is to serve Catholics."

I'm guessing that there is more to the story than is being reported.

Newman Centers are Catholic Centers.

Even though I'm the most libby lib and I don't agree with what the priest said, I'd side with him in this case.

So the university isn't Catholic, then? I just want to clarify because if it was I would have to mock this couple soundly.

And my feelings are pretty much the same as yours (libby lib also).

So the priest is allies with NOM and Bill Donohue?  This isn't a fireable offense, but I'd bet good money that one will be forthcoming.

BTW, he didn't just keep it in the Catholic Center- he spread the derp into the school newspaper.  FWIW.

It was founded in 1789 by the Jesuits.

No it wasn't. GWU was actually founded in 1821 (by a Baptist minister).

Here's the follow up from the school paper.

Essentially, you have two attention-whoring non-Catholic gay students who are pissed off that there's a Catholic priest at a Catholic center on campus spouting Catholic doctrine.  That one of them is a Jew just makes it more ridiculous.

He must be, I'm a GWU graduate and it's definitely not a Catholic university.  It's the failsafe school for kids in the Northeast who couldn't get into an Ivy school.

Born and raised Catholic.  Twelve years of Catholic school.  My wife and I both worked at Catholic non-profits but both of us are nonbelievers.   Sat thru lots of prayers and mandatory Masses.   Don't like it? go get a new job.  Fark I had to attend Mass off the clock.   Get over it.

If you are doubting some of the facts because of the article at LifeSiteNews and the quote from Bill Donohue, don't.  Legacy is a priest within the North American Old Catholic Church and Bergen was raised Jewish and now identifies as agnostic. (per  http://www.gwhatchet.com/2013/04/04/keeping-faith-defending-sexuality / ).

It's probably OK. The  North American Old Catholic Church is not actually part of the RCC.

If this were 1970, and there were a Mormon church on campus telling us that black people are disgusting, soulless beasts,* would everyone feel the same way? Or is it only because hating gay people is still acceptable to 40% of the population that we think this is speech worthy of subsidy by the university?

*Sorry to single out the Mormons; I know this is no longer believed by the mainstream Mormon church, but I needed an example of an overtly racist religious belief, and this was the easiest.

Add to that: This isn't a "free speech" issue. The government would not shut down anyone's speech. The university would defund the Catholic organization. Though there is a right to say hateful things, there's no right to get money or keep your job even when you say hateful things (regardless of whether those things are your religious beliefs or not--as we see above, religious beliefs can be quite unpalatable).

The university still funds the Jewish and Muslim centers, so they're in a bit of a pickle.
