Can someone give those of us confused by all this a good reason why anyone would want to travel to the UAE in the first place? With the obvious exception of business travel, of course.

Sounds like a silly place. A silly place that takes itself incredibly seriously, which is a very dangerous combination for the unaware traveler.

Heh - internet skiing/snowboarding dickwagging! I agree, Colorado has great skiing & snow. I've been skiing for a while now. I grew up and live up here in the Pacific NW, so I have a pretty good ski resort about 45 minutes away, and get a season's pass most every year. Between the gondola, and high speed six packs/four packs, and hardly any lines, it's a pretty nice place to ski. I know there are larger resorts, but I'm happy w/ 3,100 vert and about 3,600 acres (including outbounds backcountry). The conditions have been really good over the past couple years, a few hundred inches of snow each season. Last year, the season started well before Thanksgiving, and I was still boarding on the 3rd of July. I think Colorado's season was a few months shorter, due to lack of snow. My best season was 45 days up on the slopes (gotta get to work sometime).

Last year, there was so much snow that they were digging out a number of the lifts - mid trip - just to keep running:
sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net

www.pikpuk.com
Unless you're an instructor or were professional, odds are I have more time on the slopes and backcountry than 98% of people.

1990's

In the early 2000's I'd even dress up as the college mascot and go snowboarding on the slopes for the student radio station stunts (I have a downhill 'boarding costume shot somewhere . . .)

Today:

But to get back to your original point, while the slope in Ski Dubai is about 300 feet of vert, 1/4 mile w/ a 90 degree turn, it's still unique. Heck, they even have one black diamond run, which is kinda funny to have indoors; and combined with real penguins they have marching around, it something else. Definitely a fun place to dick around for about 90 minutes - not that expensive either.

Oooh, and since I feel like going overboard with the photo sharing - even bought myself a spare chairlift last year to mount as a swinging seat in my shop:

//or skiing in indoors, in the middle of the desert.

My buddy lived there teaching English for two years. It's one of the best places in the middle east, and still one of the worst on the planet. It's customarily backward for people from the US, sure, but it also is horrifically corrupt, exploitative of foreign workers, obsessed with wealth to such an obsurd fault, and hotter than shiat.

Kinda think you are, several people asked why you might go there, so he posted some pictures of things they have there. I've worn bikinis in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey and the UAE (only in Dubai, big no-no in Sharjah). I'd most likely not do it again in the UAE because it attracts unnecessary attention at the public beaches. It's not such a big deal at private resorts and hotel pools but you definitely feel out of place when the women next to you are completely covered. It's funny because the tipping point is reached when more women in bikinis cause the women in hijabs to feel uncomfortable.

Selfish and foolish. Tantamount to a Jew vacationing at the Eagles Next in 1940. Do you like climbing into lions cages as well. They are such pretty kitties!

Judge away.  As Mark Twain said, "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime."
