My buddy lived there teaching English for two years. It's one of the best places in the middle east, and still one of the worst on the planet. It's customarily backward for people from the US, sure, but it also is horrifically corrupt, exploitative of foreign workers, obsessed with wealth to such an obsurd fault, and hotter than shiat.

Can someone give those of us confused by all this a good reason why anyone would want to travel to the UAE in the first place? With the obvious exception of business travel, of course.

Sounds like a silly place. A silly place that takes itself incredibly seriously, which is a very dangerous combination for the unaware traveler.

Trust me Scottsdale is corrupt. The guy from Goodfellas ran a restaurant and drugs there. His "crime" probably wasn't paying enough to the right people in Scottsdale.

It's amazing to me how much America want's to be liberal, but still has a huge problem with public nudity in places it would otherwise be accepted in the developed world, like beaches.

There are no true liberals left in America. I only see democrats who think they're fighting for a liberal cause, but it's really just statism they're asking for.

Not that this thread had anything to do with America...

News flash:  America doesn't want to be like other countries.  its founders left Europe because they didn't like the way Europe did things.  There was even fought a war over it.  Every succeeding push westward was done by yet another person who didn't like the way things were done farther east.

This.  So much this.  So incredibly much this.  It used to baffle me how many people failed to realize that when wrongful behaviour was ignored simply because of the "they are nice to me" excuse, the behaviour was in fact being endorsed.  Then I accepted that most people are blind to logic and facts that inconvenience their immediate gratification.

Laws based upon bronze age fairy tales and social morays in line with stone age tribes.  I'd say they are about as far back as you are going to go.  And by "they" I mean all groups that legislate based upon the aforementioned bronze age tales and tribal social rules.

Other than the tallest building, you can do that stuff other places.

I dove in the whale shark tank in ATL.

There are several indoor ski places, and the largest is apparently in the Netherlands  where I'd personally rather go anyway.

Doesn't seem like there's a reason to go to Dubai other than to say you went, which in itself is a good enough reason for me, but there doesn't seem to be anything inherently special.

I went there with my brother and it was actually neat. Why you may ask? We went on his business and had a "handler" on the trip that allowed us to know what was and was not allowed. if you keep things private- and as a formal guest of a handler- you can enjoy a reasonably good time. I assume it would be the same if you went to Cuba,North Korea or New York city. As decent folks we had no interest in debauchery ,drugs or dicking around. best part is there is no grass to stay off of.

I got your point. Was just goofin' on it a bit. Facts are ~50MM people visit the top 5 Middle East destinations each year (50% to Egypt or Saudi Arabia). 99.875% of these daredevils, with only minor modifications to their daily existence, have safe and positive experiences (including the ones like no bikinis, weird food, smelly bus rides, etc - that make for the best stories when you get home to normal). Of course, if you're from the US, it also helps to say you're Canadian.

Well...there's the whole ancient cradle of civilization thing. Totally not worth giving up your pot and bikini for a week.

Cradle of civilization? Since when?

Back when the crescent was fertile.

The Pope of Manwich Village: I got your point.

6% of that are often-dirt poor pilgrims making the Hajj. Most of them are fairly local anyway.

Sounds like a silly place. A silly place that takes itself incredibly seriously, which is a very dangerous combination for the unaware traveler.

I had on skis - it was ripp'n cold - there was frozen h20 in which I slid down on a slope.

Was it fresh natural powered on a double diamond run? No. But it was skiing in the middle of the Arabian peninsula.

I even mad a little video of some of the shiat I saw. link.

Heh, you come across like such a tourist douche. "Look what I did!" You were not 'skiing', you were participating in a publicity stunt. Get over yourself. Come out to Colorado, where you can ski for real, if you can.

You are getting angry because a man on the internet skied indoors.

Relax.

No, I'm not angry at all. But there is nothing special about someone self-aggrandizing about silly tourist trap 'accomplishments'. It is a legit target for derision.

I didn't really take it that way. I thought he was just demonstrating how Dubai has supplanted Japan as the weird little Sci fi country where the future is being beta tested.

Maybe, but I doubt I'm the only one who took it as "look at me, look how cool I am cause I went to Disney-Dubai!".

But, strapping up for a tourist trap mini-hill in the desert just so you can go online and brag about it, is weak sauce. He didn't climb some snow capped desert peak and ski down, he vastly overpaid at some tourist trap so he could go online with the "...look how cool I am I skied in the desert!" braggadocio. If you're not openly gay, traveling with an unmarried woman, and not a stoner, you'll be fine. Everyone I met there was really nice, and spoke English.

There is nothing inherently special about anywhere. It all depends on what you like. I couldn't care less about going to Africa but some of my friends think its the most amazing place on earth. For me I would much rather go to China or Russia...but I have a thing for the history of communism so that interests me.

The U.S. has nude beaches, and non-nude ones.  I personally feel it's nicer to have the choice instead of having one opinion or the other force their opinion on the other side.

Heh - internet skiing/snowboarding dickwagging! I agree, Colorado has great skiing & snow. I've been skiing for a while now. I grew up and live up here in the Pacific NW, so I have a pretty good ski resort about 45 minutes away, and get a season's pass most every year. Between the gondola, and high speed six packs/four packs, and hardly any lines, it's a pretty nice place to ski. I know there are larger resorts, but I'm happy w/ 3,100 vert and about 3,600 acres (including outbounds backcountry). The conditions have been really good over the past couple years, a few hundred inches of snow each season. Last year, the season started well before Thanksgiving, and I was still boarding on the 3rd of July. I think Colorado's season was a few months shorter, due to lack of snow. My best season was 45 days up on the slopes (gotta get to work sometime).

Last year, there was so much snow that they were digging out a number of the lifts - mid trip - just to keep running:
sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net

www.pikpuk.com
Unless you're an instructor or were professional, odds are I have more time on the slopes and backcountry than 98% of people.

1980's

1990's

In the early 2000's I'd even dress up as the college mascot and go snowboarding on the slopes for the student radio station stunts (I have a downhill 'boarding costume shot somewhere . . .)
sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net

Today:
sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net

But to get back to your original point, while the slope in Ski Dubai is about 300 feet of vert, 1/4 mile w/ a 90 degree turn, it's still unique. Heck, they even have one black diamond run, which is kinda funny to have indoors; and combined with real penguins they have marching around, it something else. Definitely a fun place to dick around for about 90 minutes - not that expensive either.

Oooh, and since I feel like going overboard with the photo sharing - even bought myself a spare chairlift last year to mount as a swinging seat in my shop:

//or skiing in indoors, in the middle of the desert.

It was the "I went into a perfectly safe aquarium with some vegetarian sharks" that got me. I'm scuba certified, I've been in the water with real sharks (tigers, reef sharks, hammerheads), and I was once bitten by a hammerhead. (Small bite. Bloody, but no real damage.)

My dad ran a ski school in the Cascades in Washington state when I was growing up, so I also know what skiing is. And I'm pretty sure I know how to take an elevator to the top of any building. When I really want to get some elevation, I jump out of an airplane.

So I wasn't impressed with the Dubai travelogue, either. But if that's what you or someone else wants, go nuts.

I wouldn't give my money to those assholes, though. And I'm not wearing a damn burqa or any of that sh*t. F*ck the UAE.

Kinda think you are, several people asked why you might go there, so he posted some pictures of things they have there. Unless he is the subby and wanted this to go green so he could post his vacation pics, then I think he was just stating, they gots stuffs to do there where you don't have to be drink or wear a bikini.

Holy crap, I've been away from Fark for awhile, definitely didn't miss the utterly retarded chest pounding.  Dude went skiing indoors, in a shiatty (shined-up shiat) country in the Middle East.  A lot of people back home think that's kind of neat, I know this because my own family and friends think so, too.  It's hilarious to me that you seem to be taking it as some sort of personal insult, Ow! That was my feelings!.  Congratulations for living in Colorado, sport.

They weren't the most ferocious sharks around (if you want redonkulous, chummed open-water shark feeding dives in Tahiti are something else), but it is interesting to dive in one of the world's largest tanks, with 15 different species of shark, including Tiger, Black Tip Shark, White Tip Shark, Spotted Bamboo Shark, Coral Cat Shark, Zebra Horned Shark, Wobbegong Shark and Leopard Shark - plus some 260 other species of fish - totaling up as 33,000 fish in one tank.

A draft on the 'how gay' scale:

1. Banging wife while watching sport center
2. Rim job by lovely lady
3. Ball slapping dude during double penetration
4. Smooshing dicks together for a simultaneous BJ from a big mouthed gal
5. Jacking it in front of another dude
6. Gay oral
7. Butzex

I've worn bikinis in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey and the UAE (only in Dubai, big no-no in Sharjah). I'd most likely not do it again in the UAE because it attracts unnecessary attention at the public beaches. It's not such a big deal at private resorts and hotel pools but you definitely feel out of place when the women next to you are completely covered. It's funny because the tipping point is reached when more women in bikinis cause the women in hijabs to feel uncomfortable.

Judge away.  As Mark Twain said, "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime."

It's not such a big deal at private resorts and hotel pools but you definitely feel out of place when the women next to you are completely covered. It's funny because the tipping point is reached when more women in bikinis cause the women in hijabs to feel uncomfortable.

Selfish and foolish. Tantamount to a Jew vacationing at the Eagles Next in 1940. Do you like climbing into lions cages as well. They are such pretty kitties!

Please sign a no rescue / no negotiate waiver and leave it with the State Department. You might save some Marine's or diplomat's life. Everything is fine and there's never a problem, until there is. I'm sure you could find other places to go.
