UAE = If you don't make 10 mil a year, what's the point of coming here?

I honestly have no idea why you as a American/ Westerner would travel to such restrictive places like the Middle East.  Even if you have bukkets and bukkets of money...I see no point in giving my money to a nation that arrests you for having marijuana on the BOTTOM of your shoe.

My buddy lived there teaching English for two years. It's one of the best places in the middle east, and still one of the worst on the planet. It's customarily backward for people from the US, sure, but it also is horrifically corrupt, exploitative of foreign workers, obsessed with wealth to such an obsurd fault, and hotter than shiat.

Can someone give those of us confused by all this a good reason why anyone would want to travel to the UAE in the first place? With the obvious exception of business travel, of course.

Sounds like a silly place. A silly place that takes itself incredibly seriously, which is a very dangerous combination for the unaware traveler.

One of those is acceptable government intervention for the public good. The other is not. Here, let me give you a hint.

Trust me Scottsdale is corrupt. The guy from Goodfellas ran a restaurant and drugs there. His "crime" probably wasn't paying enough to the right people in Scottsdale.

It's amazing to me how much America want's to be liberal, but still has a huge problem with public nudity in places it would otherwise be accepted in the developed world, like beaches.

There are no true liberals left in America. I only see democrats who think they're fighting for a liberal cause, but it's really just statism they're asking for.

Not that this thread had anything to do with America...

Listen, boy, in Alabama ain't no one trying to be liberal... and our beaches are for sopping up job-creating oil, not for me to see your momma's caboose.

I enjoyed going on a weekend trip to Dubai last year:

-Went to the top of the world's tallest building

-Scuba dived in this giant shark tank

-Went skiing

If you're not openly gay, traveling with an unmarried woman, and not a stoner, you'll be fine. Everyone I met there was really nice, and spoke English.

News flash:  America doesn't want to be like other countries.  its founders left Europe because they didn't like the way Europe did things.  There was even fought a war over it.  Every succeeding push westward was done by yet another person who didn't like the way things were done farther east.

sigh...you missed my point entirely.  Yeah, the region has a ton of history and it would be cool as shait to travel there, only without the fear that one minor misstep could land you in prison for years and years, get a limb chopped off, be beaten and tortured, or even killed.

You know with all it's wealth the UAE it seems to spend it on the same bling crap and glitter  as a welfare queen winning the lottery.

We know the money will run in our lifetime and the place will be Coney island on the Persian Gulf.

Really WTF, couldn't they do something with the money and clean slate, rather than turn the place into skymall.

This.  So much this.  So incredibly much this.  It used to baffle me how many people failed to realize that when wrongful behaviour was ignored simply because of the "they are nice to me" excuse, the behaviour was in fact being endorsed.  Then I accepted that most people are blind to logic and facts that inconvenience their immediate gratification.

Laws based upon bronze age fairy tales and social morays in line with stone age tribes.  I'd say they are about as far back as you are going to go.  And by "they" I mean all groups that legislate based upon the aforementioned bronze age tales and tribal social rules.
