I don't get the bans on virtual child porn.  The whole theory of illegal possession is that it creates an industry that exploits children.  But if you ban virtual porn as well, you're only encouraging the pedophile to target real children.  They already can't go to a psychiatrist because of mandatory reporting laws.  So we're basically relying on the good will of underground pedophiles to get their rocks off in ways that don't exploit children.

Pedophiles don't choose to be pedophiles and being one doesn't mean you actually abuse children--only that there's a sexual attraction.  Stupid quotes like this:

"The ways a person entertains themself is not morally negligible. This is probably an additional factor in the current case because as well as worrying about the effects these activities might have on children, we also naturally make moral judgments about the character of the person in question."

proves some people want to use the law to target people merely because of who they are and not for their activities, which isn't justice.

If the cartoon involved warfare and people being blown to bits, it would not only be okay, but Patriotic.

Congratulations Sir! You have a brain and actually use it!

The extraordinary uproar over perceived child molesters is media driven, backed up by politicians who use it as a 'good will' act to encourage votes.

I actually have studied porn over the years and broke it down into several categories but something I noticed is that there is a large group of people who get all steamed up over certain forms of porn, but would never actually do it themselves.

Cartoon porn has risen in predominance since the creation of the Internet, mainly because the characters are fantasy. No one is getting hurt. Often they tend to look better than actual human beings. They can commit improbable acts not possible in real life and show up in the next chapter unhurt and just fine.

There is a very small possibility that in child porn, depicted in cartoons, that a hard core pedophile will attempt to copy an act, but, then again, cartoon images or not, a hard core pedophile will commit sexual violations against children anyhow.

They can't help it.

Ever met anyone into bondage or sadism? They can't help it either. It's in their genes. I've seen some pretty gross, LEGAL stuff performed among consenting adults that would send me screaming from the room but which turns them on tremendously.

Yeah, there's about a thousand theories as to why these legal perverts do what they do, but they actually make up only a small percentage of the normal population.

A larger percentage of 'normal' folks might view images of such acts and get all steamed up, but never experience them for themselves. That's like teens and young adults coming across grizzly images of death and mangled bodies. Most can't stop themselves from looking at them.

Which is why so many very detailed horror movies have been big hits. (Like SAW.) In the 1950's you never saw anyone get their guts ripped out in living color or face chewed off right down to the crunching of the bones. Yet 99.99% of the viewers will NOT go out and disembowel someone.

There was a comic book in the 50's and 60's that came out displaying graphic images of decaying bodies of the undead, people being torn apart and gallons of spraying blood. Within a year it was banned by law.

Now, you see all of what it displayed on TV -- and much, much more -- and more realistic. Yet, the movies are not banned. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in all of it's incarnations has lasted for decades and SAW takes things even further, with bloody, hideous torture.

So, now you have cartoons of fantasy figures which resemble children involved in sex acts, most improbable, and you can now be arrested, convicted, jailed and made into a social outcast for daring to view or copy any of them, even if you never intended to act.

Because you MIGHT decide to copy what you saw.

I've seen shiat eaters in porn and there's no way I would even want to be in the same room with those folks. Then there are the cutters: folks who get steamed up by getting slightly cut with razor blades during sex. Sorry. Whip out a razor on me or most folks I know during sex and cut me and the ol' Steel Pole will wilt like a noodle and I'll run like hell.

Yet, I know of folks who like to see images of such things -- but not get cut on.

Imagery is a powerful force, which is why we have so much art. It hits you in areas often in your subconscious. What you might consider a thing of fantastic beauty, they guy next to you might consider it junk. I see 'American Primitives' all of the time and all they remind me of is a 6 year old doing, poorly, a painting. Though others praise these things as great works.

Cartooning is an art form. It affects people like regular art. (I can't stand the basic graphic art in comic books and things drawn like 'Adventure Time' creep me out, while 'Ren and Stimpy' was downright disgusting -- yet all are legal.)

However, toss in anything which has a kid getting sex, even depicted as willingly among other members of their own age group -- and you're a perv. Slime of the earth. You should be burned at the stake and your ashes buried in a dump.

Though it's fine if you watch people being slowly disemboweled, devoured alive, pulled apart, hearts ripped out, blown into a scattering of wet, bloody, steaming body parts or fed, screaming, into a wood chipper.

That's OK.

Rape cartoons are just fine also, so long as they deal with adults. You get to view massive penises being rammed impossibly deep into victims, which would tear apart organs, break ribs and cause substantial blood loose and fatality, but that's legal. It's just fine.

Download a cartoon 10 year old having sex with another cartoon 10 year old and you go to jail. Even if they're depicted as happy and not mutilating each other.

Rape is a real problem, but you will not go to jail for filling your computer with images of rape between adults.

Many of you get steamed up over rape images -- but you'd never do actual rape! Maybe play rape with a willing partner -- yes, such acts do exist.

A true pedophile is bound to commit acts of molestation because he or she is driven by a compulsion which overrides the brain. (Kind of like when you were 22 and drunk and the girl next to you was drunk and passed out and the opportunity was there for Date Rape -- only you didn't consider it that.)

Most of you got so steamed up in sexual situations that you just threw caution -- and cloths -- to the winds if you didn't have protection with you.

That's how powerful the compulsion is.

Of course, no one gives a shiat about that. The molester is a perv. He or she needs to be removed from society and forever watched. They may as well brand PERV across their foreheads since their rights to privacy are willingly violated.

The primary side effect of all of these vague sex offender laws and the media inflamed public, is that true molesters used to leave the majority of their victims alive.

Now, they're killing more of them to avoid getting caught and tossed basically into a living hell.

Like the Three Strikes law was to get career criminals off the streets and lower crime. It unexpectedly resulted in such criminals now killing witnesses where before they used to leave more of them alive.

Why not? You're going to jail for life for stealing $60 from a cash register, might as well kill the cashier and the two customers and maybe you can get away with it.

Even shrinks have a hard time presenting discoveries and theories about molesters for fear they'll be branded as closet molesters themselves.

So remember. You can't download a cartoon, kid-like image having willing sex, even with other kid-like images, but you CAN download mimages of kids being torn apart, mauled, shredded, tortured and gutted.

After all, the latter only deals with torture and hideous pain as well as death. The prior deals with SEX! You MIGHT act on the sexual one.

I'm not going into the murder/pain/torture as part of a sexual turn on either. That's a whole other observation.

It's because people lose their minds when you mention sex and children. And, really, that's the ONLY reason. You have the same reaction, to a lesser extent, with adult porn--that even virtual rape is rape per se--but add a kid in there and you get "Well, they're imagining raping a child, which means they COULD be raping a child which means they WOULD rape a child if they had the chance which means they ARE CHILD RAPERS OMF!!!!11!!!"

That jacking off to a picture of an imaginary child (i.e. a virtual representation of a nonexistant child) would be preferable to jacking off to a picture of a real child, and much much better than jacking off with an actual child seems not to have any distinction in the minds of 99% of people. And those of us who make this distinction are instantly called either apologists for child-rapers or "moral relativists" or some nonsense.

We should make education a crime as well. When people learn about science, math, pe, and other subjects, the knowledge they learn CAN lead them to evil acts. Smart sciency people can create weapons and monsters that could kill people. People who have perfected math can become the next business people who can outsmart the government and pay the most ridiculous minimum tax amount in history. People who develop their bodies with pe can become your local thugs who beat up anyone and take their belongings. Everything can lead us to evil, oh no, let's just ban being alive!

Now, now. We all know that access to (adult) pornography results in a decline of rapes, but that just doesn't count when it comes to pedos. I mean, if we allow ourselves to understand that giving these people a safe outlet for their desires then we can't run around like lunatics screaming our damned heads off in abject terror.

The short answer is that the sort of people who are obsessed by pedophiles aren't actually interested in protecting children, but rather in controlling the content of other adults' minds.

I'm not encouraging child molestation. I'm encouraging giving these people a safe, legal outlet for their feelings that does not involve the victimization of (real) children. I'm sorry you'd rather put real children at higher risk because you lack the ability to think rationally.

Louis CK did a pretty good bit about Child Farkers...he said that because society sees Child Farking as so very evil, it actually causes more children to be murdered (in order to hide the identity of the child farker) than if society held this crime at the same level as regular murder...something along the lines of society will try to find out "why" a murder happened, and even make excuses for a murderer "He was driven to it..."

He's not wrong though. We so demonize the child diddlers that they feel forced to have to murder their victims rather than just diddle them and let them go home. And as Louis CK says... I'm not sure what to do with that information, no idea how to use it.

Grables'Daughter: It does seem bizarre that animated porn would be illegal.

It should seem just as bizarre that it's illegal in the United States, as well. Back in '96, under attorney general Ashcroft, we got the Child Pornography Protection Act which made all virtual depictions of minors having sex automatically illegal. This provision was struck down in 2002 during a Supreme Court Ruling - Ashcroft v Free Speech Coalition.

The prohibition came back in 2003 as part of the PROTECT Act, which per Wikipedia "enacted 18 U.S.C. § 1466A, which criminalizes material that has "a visual depiction of any kind, including a drawing, cartoon, sculpture or painting", that "depicts a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct and is "obscene" or "depicts an image that is, or appears to be, of a minor engaging in ... sexual intercourse ... and lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value"."

Because there's a community standards test (for obscenity, and whether something lacks one of several hard-to-legally-define values) the law has been used to prosecute people successfully several times; thus, yes, loli porn is a completely prosecutable offense here in the land of the free, despite no children being harmed in the making thereof, etc., etc., much to the surprise and chagrin of our denizens of 4chan and its many bastard children.

As with movies, music, and microcode, traffic in loli porn remains brisk for those interested in such matters, and given the lax state of enforcement it will continue to do so up 'til the next major government crusader starts attacking sites and content hosts (possibly with the intent of invalidating "safe harbor" provisions that protect ISPs?). That's life. All that isn't prohibited is allowed, and all that's not enforced isn't actually prohibited.

What's funny and sad is the little photocopied cartoon we passed around in junior high would now be a federal child porn case.

Cartoon boy with a Ziggy like body naked and without discrete genitalia standing on head of similarly drawn naked girl.

Boy: "I'm on top of you.  Now what are we supposed to do?"

Girl: "I don't know, but I have a headache already."

/ tada!  child porn!

staplermofo: It was a guy who already had sex with minors, and the treatment for pedophiles usually includes not indulging any thoughts close to sexualizing a minor.  So it's not as bad as it looks from the headline.  I am an idiot.

And just how the hell do they think they can enforce a ban on how he feels?

"conviction for possessing objectionable material"

Well there's your problem.

To be fair, he does have a prior sexual assault conviction. This was a probably a violation of some sort related to that.
