It's age and wisdom. Been there, done that, got bored with the fleeting thrills and melodrama. We all go through it if we have an I.Q. over 90 and actually mature as we age. At some point, it just gets better when it's with someone you truly love, and it feels hollow otherwise.

You didn't ask, but I was a fan of his strip  What's New with Phil & Dixie back before Phil Foglio started doing Xxenophile.

And while we're on the topic of comic hipster cred, I was a fan of Life in Hell before  Matt Groening created The Simpsons, too, so get off my lawn.

leadmetal: TFA: "The ways a person entertains themself is not morally negligible. This is probably an additional factor in the current case because as well as worrying about the effects these activities might have on children, we also naturally make moral judgments about the character of the person in question."

Meanwhile images of murder, torture, and other violent acts virtual or otherwise are still valid entertainment. And if that's not enough, with the right kinds of government jobs one can actually order or carry them out legally.

You've heard, probably, about the somewhat odd CIA (Army?) interrogator who notoriously insisted an innocent German Muslim who happened to have the same name as a wanted terrorist was nevertheless a terrorist because SHE COULD JUST TELL. She had him hauled to Egypt and kept in solitary for six months while she personally tortured, er, interrogated him repeatedly, even while her colleagues insisted they had the wrong guy. He was eventually returned to Berlin (or wherever they found him), completely shattered.

It makes you wonder what exactly the motivations are, of people who want to carry out these intensive interrogations. I don't mean routine beatings or even waterboardings; I'm talking about the stuff that was going on down at Camp Xray when Cheney was in charge.

Awright. I really, really hate these bastards. Granted, I hate a lot of bastards but these wankers have a special wee place all their own. I don't know what to do about them aside from slowly and very, very patronisingly explain to them in small words and simple sentences that fantasy and reality are in fact two very different things.

Because clearly either they themselves can't tell the difference or are so mind-bogglingly arrogant as to actually believe that other people are incapable of telling the difference. This goes for all the bawbags out there moaning about videogame violence or blaming whatever perfectly innocent media they choose for being the cause of whatever vile and horrific act of violence is in the news at the time.

Also, this is purely a heartfelt opinion shared with my fellow Farkers and not at all a bookmark to helop me come back and see the pictures of lasses in fairy fetish costumes for later.

Smgth: vygramul:
I'm not satisfied with this. It's certainly interesting, and the indications show some correlation, but it's still more of a "look at x, now look at y". I think outside of tracking a whole lot of child molesters and seeing if CP keeps the recidivism rate down, we're not measuring the thing itself. But even that won't tell us whether people who HAVEN'T molested anyone are being KEPT from molesting by CP...which I think is really the most important aspect.

I'm not saying you should consider it cut and dry and done. But how can one justify an alternative null hypothesis?

I'm not sure I follow you.

The lack of evidence to the contrary means that you should assume the more likely case is that porn does not cause rape but mitigates it. A proposition with zero scientific evidence supporting it is inferior to one with evidence to support it. You should demand evidence that it doesn't mitigate it.

A fair point, but as I said 'correlation is not causation' so shall I also say 'lack of evidence is not evidence of lack'. One study weighs the argument toward that side, but one study (a study of a type that can't decide the matter any way) is hardly significant enough to say "this is the side of the argument science is on". That is the proposition that the people who made one study are on, which may or may not be what the consensus farther down the line. One data point is better than no data points, but the difference between one and nine is pretty fine.

I'm not saying I don't believe that CP doesn't mitigate child molestation, I'm saying the studies arent really going to be able to show something like that. You can't find out what people WOULD HAVE done had they not found CP, at least as far as people who have never offended. I, personally, think that people probably ARE channeling thoughts of socially unacceptable behavior into a fantasy life where it stays. I certainly WANT to believe it, which is not particularly scientific, but what the hell.

As far as I'm concerned, if you aren't hurting anyone, any animal, anyone else's property, then you should be left alone. I doubt it's the guys in their basements reading Bondage Fairies we need concern ourselves with. It's the guys in the parks with pockets full of candy...

Interesting. Charge was brought against a 47 year-old man who diddled a 17 year-old girl.  Virginia courts held that the Lawrence v. Texas SCOTUS decision applies only to consensual sex between two adults.  Consensual sex with someone over 15 is only a misdemeanor in VA.  The guy was convicted of soliciting a minor to commit a felony (presumably, the crime against nature) and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Oh right, of course it works that way.  Just like people and any other kinds of porn.  Hell, just like any other form of media.  Yeah, that's the ticket.  You watch Star Wars enough, and BAM just like that we have an unregistered Jedi to deal with.  History Channel buff?  We're watching you.  Any day now you may just start a war.  We know what you're watching, and we don't like it.  Like impressionist paintings?  We... um...  well, we don't like it and we're sure there's some way you'll ruin society!

Perhaps if this person keeps acting like moral compass, one day he'll have one.

Right, it's just people who want control masquerading it as justice in order to get their way.  They're so convinced that it makes sense from their own perspective that clearly it will make sense from everyone's perspective.  If there's one thing a control freak can do well, it's convince himself.
