Ellen Degeneres dancing would be too much sexuality for the theocracy to handle, a Kirk Cameron project is bound to cause apoplexy-which isn't entirely unjustified, considering that it's, you know, Kirk Cameron.

Yes. It was all very scientific. It was decided that boob viewing was unlikely.

This is a good example of the differences between the Japanese and Americans.

Nosebleeds on American TV are caused by:
1) Result of a fistfight
2) Brain cancer
3) Overusing your psychic powers

Nosebleeds on Japanese TV are caused by:
1) Erections

That is so freakin sad on the part of the Iranians. Didn't ancient Persia used to be one of the smartest places on the planet? Seat of much knowledge, etc.?

The other reason the "censorship tricks" presentation is sad is it reminds me of fundy Baptists and others of their ilk (Mormon boys, don't you be touchin' your boy parts!) who hold sway over vast areas of this nation.

What'd one over-the-hill fundamentalist say to the other?
Who cares.

It just reminds us why we can never let the fundamentalists of any religion gain control over the government.

offended by a scene in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds

I'm a little surprise they would even show that film in Iran.  Would have been rated X in the U.S. 40 years ago.

Iran has some of the the best filmmakers in the world.  Setting aside (if possible) the leadership, Iran is far from backward.  Actually, Iran is a lot like the U.S.

Al Jazeera had a story recently about how Iranian censorship is hurting Iranian cinema. Apart from the obvious reasons, they pointed out that there are some brilliant filmmakers working outside of Iran who are making mediocre politically oriented films that should be panned but are instead getting lauded by western critics because of the subject matter, which is egging them on to make more mediocre political films.

I would love to see the logic behind why women weren't allowed to work at lingerie stores and they all had to be staffed by men.

It's sad yet kind of funny when you imagine what the store environment would be like...

Tiberius Gracchus: That's a funny way to spell Genghis Khan.

No, he came after. Islam was already crippled by invasions by Turks (Seljiuks), Mameluks, the Umayyad/Abbasid civil war and the Crusades by the time the Mongols sacked Baghdad.

Ghazali was the one who convinced the caliphs to embrace a new era of insulating fundamentalism and reject everything non-Muslim as a corrupting influence on Islam, and that included the classics like Greek philosophy. They have yet to recover since.

What care I, love, for what the Sufis say?
The Sufis are but drunk another way;
So you be drunk, it matters not the means.
So you be drunk - and glorify your clay.

Drunken myself, and with a merry mind.
An old man passed me, all in vine-leaves twined ;
"Old man, hast thou forgotten God?"
"Go, drink yourself," he said, "for God is kind."

**Did God set grapes a-growing, do you think.
And at the same time make it sin to drink?
Give thanks to Him who foreordained it thus -
Surely He loves to hear the glasses clink ! "

The funny part is the Sufis (and many scholars) claim that he was  totally a Sufi, and use this poem as evidence.

did i repeat something from a show i have never watched? that would be a strange coincidence as i think that show is garbage based on the four minutes of the first episode i watched....

if that's the case, maybe i should write for Seth McGarbage.

Too bad the four minutes of a show you watched that you have never watched wasn't more enjoyable.
