If his best friend, or the people his best friend was living with were into drugs and were dealing and he suddenly came down with a case of ultra-Conservativeness? That might set him off. Covering them in the pot and not taking the money generated by the illegal sales of the drugs could make sense for him.

it's time we start profiling the quiet ones. in fact, all these people who keep to themselves and don't talk much should be rounded up, detained and rehabilitated until they acquire the habit of engaging others in conversation at least once an hour on a daily basis. and they must be monitored upon their release to make sure they maintain this same level of social interaction. only then can we be sure they are not hiding anything from us and we needn't worry about them. if they start getting quiet again or are discovered sneaking off to be alone, we send them right back to rehab.

Nope, he got that in 2012. 9/11 could still be significant though.

11 seems to be significant.

There were 216 days between Sept 11, 2012 and April 15, 2013.   If we divide 216 by his age (19), it works out to slightly over 11.

If even gets more creepy when you realize that the different between those days is also 7 months, 4 days.

The Boston Marathon was started in 1897, or 116 years ago.

The race record was set in, you guessed it, 2011.

What significance does 11 have?   Damned if I know.  I'm stretching for even tenuous connections here.  I make a bad conspiracy theorist.

Its not being introverted that's the problem, its the ones that are quietly going about their prayers in a mosque and then, upon mention of a non-Muslim, they freak the fark out. Introvert may internally disagree, may switch houses of worship, but they're not going to freak the fark out on an imam.

You're messing it up by saying "slightly over 11" - you have to ignore the slightest inconsistencies and make up for them with your zeal for the conspiracy. I can only give you a C- on the theory. You gotta go harder.

What year was the older bomber born? 1987? That's eerie! Boston Marathon = 1897, Boston Bomber 1987!!!111!!!!1!!! (I didn't check his year of birth... probably was born in 1986...) But I sell it with exclamation points. Your turn!

olddinosaur: vudukungfu: Who covers a body in marijuana and just leave $5000 laying about after slitting a throat?
The throat slit means it is a very personal thing. Not like you kill an enemy with, an enemy you can shoot. But slit a throat? That is for a very close friend, whom you think betrayed you. And as for the weed and money left behind, that leaves the only motive as murder.

He left the money and the dope as a message.  The murder was more important to him than the $5000 or the weed, he wanted to make sure the cops knew that.

My (speculative) thoughts as well... Have to wonder if he was already devout and maybe stumbled on his friend dealing or buying, and got pissed.

Maybe at a dash of "thought I could convert him to my cause" and the friend had to go when he realized that his friend was a stoner not a bomber.

You squint your eyes and the pixelation is barely noticeable.  That's about the resolution you used to get from a 1.2MB camera phone a few years ago.

I put it in Gimp and was running a super-resolution algorithm to see how well it would do. I just tried squinting and that seems to work better. I kind of feel like a retard right now.

Put it together folks.  He and possibly a small group of others formed a cell.  Their first act was this murder on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.  This broke all ties to US Then the older dude (and others?) travelled back to Russia for training.  I thought I read 6 months in 2012.  They picked a target of the marathon which also had historical significance and then they planned and acted.  There are more of them.

I feel bad for his in-laws. His wife was brainwashed and converted, probably knows more than she's letting on, and has dragged a child and her whitebread family into a terrorist plot.

And I still say his violence and sudden slip into religious extremism could be the result of brain damage incurred as a boxer.

COULD be. I don't know for sure. Nobody will, I guess.

Tatsuma: Practice, or another event that sent him spinning down toward extremism?

Yes.

"It's the quiet ones you've gotta watch. Everytime you see a story about a serial criminal on tv what do they do? They bring on the neighbor and the neighbor says "weeeell, he was always very quiet" and someone in the room says "It's the quiet ones you gotta watch". This sound to me like a very dangerous assumption - I will bet you anything that while you're watching someone quiet a noisy one will farking kill you. Suppose you're in a bar and one guy's sitting over the side reading a book not bothering anybody, another guy stand on the front with a machette bangin' on the bar saying 'I'll kill the next motherfarker comes in here!!' - who you gonna watch? You're goddamned right."

They both hate drug use, too.

If it was a single person, slip some rohypnol in the drinks while partying with them, no struggle.

The coincidence is staggering and the words are printed on the Daily Mail so I wouldn't know what to think at this point.

durbnpoisn: Is it too soon to point out that hindsight is always 20/20?

Yes it is but you'd think with all the money and manpower being spent on homeland security and frisking Grandma at the airport perhaps we could get the FBI to put people on a watch list when foreign governments warn us about them.  Or when that same person's best friend and associates show up dead on the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 we have some kind of database that joins those together.  Or we spend more money training local law enforcement on how to use social media to track down people to question.  Or something.

This whole thing reminds me of the underwear bomber.  Dude who is alread on a watch list buys a cash one way ticket with no luggage originating in a country that is a known hotbed of terrorism and there's no catch.

Some sell grilling machines and give all their sons the same first name, some convert to the peaceful version of Islam and change their name to Mohammed, some bite off ears and rape their girlfriends, and others shout at imams and blow shiat up.

Slit throats

Hmmm ... usually can't do that to all three unless a) there are others with you, b) you got the drop and secured your victims first or, c) they know you and trust you. And frankly, busting a drug dealers chops for some reason is usually a 9mm kind of thing ... not three slit throats.  And $5,000 left behind.
