So i'm wondering if he froze up on TV when he had a chance to speak because someone was whispering into his ear that he had a hot mic? Because if his short bio speech was indicative of his on air personality he wouldn't last long in the  industry anyway.

Yes they do. Unfortunately, we're getting fewer and fewer media professionals and more and more college kids looking to get on TV. Station management, still stuck in the dark ages by and large, see this as a two-fold benefit: a) young college kids will pull in a younger demo (which is absolutely not even the case) and b) less experience means we can pay them less. This is especially true in tiny markets. Thus, you get this guy.

I've seen this exact thing happen... where the profanity just seems to come out of nowhere. That's pure lack of experience and nothing else. Even just a few years as a reporter, with a couple of liveshots going sideways, would keep this from happening. There's a good chance he was a producer or an intern at a big market, sent out a tape, and they snapped him up and put him at the anchor desk.

I once told a potential employer to go fark himself in an interview. I grabbed my resume off his desk and told him not to call me, ever. He was just being a dick the whole interview and I didn't need the job at the time so I didn't have anything to lose. Well I grabbed my resume but not the application I had to fill out so he did call me and offer me a job a couple days later but I reminded him that I told him to go fark himself and I meant it. Last I heard his wife left him he went on a downward spiral and lost everything. He ended up as a clerk in a furnature store. There is nothing wrong with being a clerk in a furniture store but for this asshole it was poetic justice.

Some teams let fly in truly incredible ways. We used to have open conversations about bukkake porn, and the girls in the adjoining art department were totally on board. (With the topic, not a bukkake party.)

Wow.  Heard about this guy and I just don't know what to say.  I'm a radio host with my own talk show based around computers and technology, so I know it can be stressful knowing thousands of folks could be listening to you at any given time, however my friends who are tv personalities and who have worked in radio have said tv is easier to produce but more stressful when you are on the air.

I think it was just nerves. Hopefully the kid bounces back and learns one if the main rules of broadcasting: when you are in the studio, act as if the cameras and mics are hot...at all times.  Only time you cut lose is when you are in the back office area, break room or in the parking lot.

I work with software, and there was a guy I was on a team with that swore so often and so casually it was the point nobody even batted an eye at it.  He'd replace entire chunks of sentences with swear words and to him it made perfect sense.

For everyone talking about ND being East Bumfark regarding broadcasting:  That's exactly the point.  You work in market 135, then move up to 94, 66, etc.  Unless things have changed (it's been almost two decades since I was in the business) even an anchor at a station like that makes a pittance.  Of course $50k in ND is probably the same as 100K in a larger city, but milk and gas still costs the same no matter which media market you're in.

Prior to the oil boom, yes...  Now things are crazy, and $50k is just above minimum wage.  ND ranks well above the national cost of index rankings.   Median home prices are somewhere around $250k or so.

There probably will never be a second chance for him.  Why would a station manager want to risk that happening a second time?  He failed at the first two words of his anchoring career in a base-level market.

According to what I saw Bismarck is 98% of the average COL overall with cheaper utilities and just over average misc.

It is market 157 which means there's not much lower he could go and they don't pay shiat anyway.  He'll be alright and find another job in a year IMHO because he's a minority (which helps in broadcasting), and he made a splash in his first gig.

Give the guy a break. Probably the most exciting thing to happen in ND this decade. Damn, they replaced Courtney Kabot (who went back to NY) and Joel Porter with an asian and a latino?  Oh the diversity!Joel and Courtney actually had some on air cohesiveness. KFYR also has a black weatherman. He's cool, too..

I moved last July, so I haven't seen the asian gal. Their penchant for hiring newbies with no experience is actually quite painful to watch sometimes. And Monica really needs to do something with her farking hair. I'm sure between her and Cliff Naylor both working at the studio they can afford to treat a little alopecia.

And milk and gas are a lot higher in ND. Milk was close to $5/gal when I left last year and in San Antonio it was $3.25. Gas in ND was $3.69 and in SA it was $3.39. Rent is going crazy there because of the oil fields, and even though the fast food joints are offering $8-$8.50/hr, that isn't enough to pay $700 plus utilities (1BR), plus car/ins/phone/internet/etc. And good luck getting any job that is paying more than $9/hr. Call centers, fast food, and retail is about all there is. I went to work for the state of ND with a Master's Degree in Accountancy, 12 years of government auditing, and was only making $32K. Take home barely paid the expenses for me and 2 kids, let alone have anything left over.

Anyone else detect a touch of Tourette's in this guy? Like he can usually keep it in check, but the nerves got to him?

Bismarck hasn't caught up with Williston / Minot as far as salaries, but neither have rents and utilities.  McD's, Wal*Mart and all manner of no-skill jobs are all starting at at least $11-15 an hour, most times with a huge bonus if you stay more than six months.  And if you were only making $32k in a state gig then you were getting screwed or are lying.  I interviewed for a state gig last year doing video that had a starting range of $45-65k.   The city of Minot has an entry accounting position open right now that starts at $55k plus govt benifits (pension, cheap medical, etc.).  In addition to oil, there are tons of manufacturing jobs that have moved in to the state, and as with all major employers, they need accountants, marketing, sales, office staff and more.  The idea that it's all just call centers and fast food is a shallow mined joke.  You could probably make a single phone call today and get a good job with great pay anywhere in the state because EVERYBODY is hiring.

To whoever asked what one would do if they cursed at work, you should come to where I work.

The company is 85% male and everyone curses so much its unbelievable. Just the other day the VP of the east coast called and ask to speak to our director of operations. When I let him know he had stepped out, he said, "ha! When he comes back, tell him to go fark himself". Keep in mind this guy sounded very eloquent and articulate.

My boss calls us pussies and gays all the time. Not too appropriate but he's leaving soon.

Look up state auditor II...I left the national guard as a GS12 step 5, and that was the best that was open at the time. The state HR director (who used to be Guard) also tried to at least get me in as III, but the supervisor wouldn't budge. So, no I am not lying, and Bismarck rents are ridiculously high unless you live in a dump. You can't rent a decent house for less than a grand, and my son's 2 br apartment on the east side (rosser and 26th) went from $640 to $910. It's not that nice of a place. The fast food joints in Williston are paying higher, but the A&W closed down because they refused to pay more than $7.50, and most of the other joints are recruiting overseas workers and piling them up in dumpy apartments. So unless you live or lived in Bismarck recently, stfu.

on a similar note, a lot of the overseas workers are blah people who don't have cars, most likely can't afford cars, and Bismarck public transportation sucks. You see those poor souls walking everywhere.  Some girl was at the CVS next to the Golden Corral (or whatever it is now) buying tampons on her break and in broken English asked me for a ride back because her boss had just walked into the stoor, she didn't want her boss to see her walking back. Really? They treat them so shiatty she couldn't even walk NEXT DOOR on her break? I sincerely doubt they are paying these folks $11/hr. If that were the case my son would still be working in fast food. He quit because he wasn't getting more than $9, and that was just 10 months ago. I know walmart in Bismarck is still only offering $9-9.50 to start (nights) because my other son just started there.

jaybeezey: So i'm wondering if he froze up on TV when he had a chance to speak because someone was whispering into his ear that he had a hot mic? Because if his short bio speech was indicative of his on air personality he wouldn't last long in the  industry anyway.

Most likely getting reamed out by the producer on IFB.

Until this happened I did not know KFYR was also a TV station.

in 1980, their AM signal provided the soundtrack to my schoolbus commutes.
