Even 50 Shades of Grey, one of the most ubiquitous books in the world right now, is caught by the filter.

Some sacrifices had to be made to limit people's ability to find this trash. I think it was worth it.

Good.  All the porn for lonely housewifes made it basically impossible to find anything in the Kindle store.

My wife used to read dime store romances. At a garage sale a couple of years ago, she placed piles of them out for people to buy. I asked if she should lay them out in such a way that buyers could see the covers, so they'd know which ones they wanted. "They're all basically the same," she says. Damned if not fifteen minutes later, someone comes and buys the whole stack without even bothering to look at them.

http://www.colorwise.com/ Pretty good for "high" volume stuff. They make plates, so one copy will cost you way too much, but a hundred comes in at <$20/each for hardback.

http://www.book1one.com/ For lower run stuff. Also good, but I think they use inkjets.

If you meant "online" publishing, just get a copy of LyX and make yourself a PDF. It's not that hard.

I have sometimes contemplated writing a hardcore story and seeing if it sells on a site like this(price it as 2.99 or something.)  If Fifty Shades of Grey can sell well despite deplorable writing perhaps it is a surprisingly lucrative market where a story involving gang bang on prom night in a church with the football team will do well.

2013-04-22 01:08:04 PM
So, we need a new search engine to find the "erotica" on Amazon.

Okay Code Monkeys!  Write a search engine that filters the catalog of ONE website, to find pages that have been deliberately hidden.

2013-04-22 01:08:26 PM
Worried my book wasn't going to show up because there's a story with hookers in it, but it's still showing up.

I'm not a fan of erotica or the questionable quality of writing of so much of the genre, it's goofy for Amazon to try to hide it in a corner.  They should maybe change the algorithm but give users the choice to include adult content or not, like google's safe search function.

2013-04-22 01:08:36 PM
You just have to work the system.

To find "cock" enter "personal massager".

To find "Ron Jeremy" enter "Harley Davidson Fathead".

To find "Jonah Falcon" enter "Ron Jeremy and 12 of his friends riding a Harley Davidson Fathead".

They aren't just segregating it? There's a reason it comes up so much: it sells. From what I understand it pretty much keeps the second hand book business going. I can only hope that Barnes & Nobel jump in and push the porn (and manage to keep brick and mortar bookstores alive).

My understanding is that book porn is like movie porn. You could divide the publishing industry into 20 genres of porn and non-porn and the non-porn will still only contain relatively tiny array of titles. All that competition, and one of the best science fiction writers Lois McMaster Bujold is still trying to break into porn (I'm guessing she is going more for the 50 shades of grey level than the "buy the lot unseen" mentioned above).

As someone who just bought a new laptop with her gay romance novel royalties, I'm not sure how concerned I should be about this.  More exposure is better (insert 'especially in porn' joke here) but my impression was that some people buy whatever is new as long as the cover looks good, some people buy things if they're on the best-seller lists, and other buy things when they're free.

I'm not sure how many people search on Amazon, accidentally get some porny results, and then buy the porn instead of what they were originally looking for.  This may be a tempest in a teacup, sales-wise.

Only thing I can see is that if they're not looking specifically in books but type out 'gay romance' you book will not show up in the results.  Not sure if that will greatly impact sales or not, but as a non-erotica self published author I can see why some might be upset even if it has limited impact.  It's hard enough to get word out there, promote it, etc and hearing that one avenue has become narrower must be frustrating, especially when it comes from the majority sales leader of eBooks.

My problem with fanfic -including my own- is too much projection. Sometimes it's good to make a character so disconnected to you that it turns into an entity of its own, and one that usually writes itself, basically (I've only done that once).

A woman who occasionally read romances once told me elements on the covers, or maybe spines, were intended to place them into subgenres. This means our heroine gets married and has children, that means sex scenes, and so on. I forget the details, not being in the market for such books.

All porn does that.  In the case of porn directed towards men, it gives the expectation that all women will engage in lesbian sex, give blowjobs at the drop of a dime and open their legs for any man.  In the porn world all people are sluts.

I'm in the process of writing my first ladyporn book. Fifty Shades sold seventy million copies. Seventy million copies! It's horribly written, sexually infantile, and did I mention horribly written? But yeah, seventy million copies. It was the biggest wake-up call of my life when I realized how low the bar had been set in this genre (and just how wide the porn door was thrown open for stay-at-home moms). You know that voice in your head that - while you're writing - constantly edits and criticizes? You can completely ignore it while writing smut.

The expectations of quality are so low that you will trip over it when you write a coherent sentence.

Why are action movies so popular when 99% of the men who see them aren't willing to be a loose cannon detective who fights giant, alien robots? It's escapism. Nobody wants their action movie to feature a cop who shoots a suspect and spends the rest of the movie with PTSD, crying, and no women want their porn to be vanilla missionary sex where the guy cums too quickly while thinking about somebody other than her, then rolls over and falls asleep.

Action movies are unrealistic and not something anyone can actually do.  The stuff in these books is easily doable if the women were willing. They're not. They think it's so hot and fantasize about it when they read it but just try and get them to actually try it.

Action movies are unrealistic and not something anyone can actually do.  The stuff in these books is easily doable if the women were willing. They're not. They think it's so hot and fantasize about it when they read it but just try and get them to actually try it.

...with you.  Something tells me if you were the handsome yet mysterious billionaire Earl of Gray or whatever, promising a life free of bills and filled with travel to exotic destinations, they'd be a little more open with their backdoor.

Grables'Daughter: So, if they've excluded it from their search results, but are still selling it, then how can I find it?

Someone hotlinked a Hitachi device from Amazon in a fark thread, and apparently I was logged into to Amazon that day.  I had fun 'other items you might like' suggestions for the next week or so.  I'm sure if you are deliberate enough they will come up.

/First they came for the porn
//then they lost interest and fell asleep.

FedExPope: Endive Wombat: When Google did away with a significant amount of porn in the image search, I was happy.  This too makes me happy.  I am not a prude, but when I search something relatively innocuous, I should not get hardcore porn.

There's a thing called safe search, maybe you've heard of it?

Even with Safe Search on, you would still get NSFW results.  Yeah, you are not going to be fired if you are searching something innocent like "Cisco IP Phone" and somewhere in the images pops up with an image of a woman with a phone in her vag...but I would rather not see that shiat at work.  You understand?

Why is it that they don't have a "View Adult Products" setting (defaulted to opt out) associated with an account?  That way the prudes who shop on Amazon wouldn't be offended by what they found, but Amazon could still sell some very lucrative products.

The Hitachi Magic Wand might be the best purchase you could ever make from Amazon. That thing is magic. Highly recommended.

I, too, had that problem. I used to play a game at work (and at home on occasion) where I'd type in a seemingly innocuous word and then set an over/under on how many results into GIS before I got porn.

Handsome B. Wonderful: Great, now can Amazon filter out all the recommendations it gives me for $2.99 books from multi-book series that are obviously just self-published turds.

If you enjoyed this Fark link, you might also enjoy Zombies of The Dead; Book 1 of the Ned Cromancer series.

we played that at the last company i worked at on a 'goof off evening' where they had beer/movies and video games going. we put up a board and took bets and everything.  we had one guy who was freakishly good at calling them.

/hitting the number of the first porn result on the button got you 10x payout. he walked out with a lot of money.

I'll take two of those three.

So that means you can help me with the abs, right?

There was no safesearch at first on GIS, which is what he was talking about. Now that it's default, things are much better for business users.

The problem here is that Amazon.co.uk turned on safesearch without a button to turn it off. It'll probably be activated as soon as any bugs are worked out over there.

Well, weev's AFK at MDCB so I'm guessing it's not him getting revenge again for not being able to advertise on the Internet for "a heroine to do the paronym of this sentence's lexical subject."

One might imagine that, just like last time, it was what Amazon themselves described as a "hamfisted" attempt to protect the kiddies.

So, did Google fix their SafeSearch or what? I've set it as low as I figure it can go, and it still feels like it filters out a lot of stuff Bing doesn't.

Gergesa: I have sometimes contemplated writing a hardcore story and seeing if it sells on a site like this(price it as 2.99 or something.)  If Fifty Shades of Grey can sell well despite deplorable writing perhaps it is a surprisingly lucrative market where a story involving gang bang on prom night in a church with the football team will do well.

Mmmm... No. Kinda boring, church aside. Now if it were priests or monks (nuns are a bit too cliched), that'd sell just fine.

yet_another_wumpus: They aren't just segregating it?

Augh, what?? Bujold writing porn?? Please tell me this is not a joke. She would write *amazing* erotica. Oh please be true please be true please be true.

abhorrent1: Why is this erotica crap so popular when probably 99% of the women who read it would probably never be willing to do the things they read about  in the books?

I'll be writing more in a week or two.
I can make it longer if you like the style,
I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer,

Grables'Daughter: TheShavingofOccam123: Grables'Daughter: TheShavingofOccam123: But Amazon has no problem allowing scam artists to sell on Amazon.com. Dollar bill, dollar bill, dollar bill.

I don't understand what you mean...

Amazon.com IS IN IT FOR THE MONEY!!1!

/basically, if you buy anything that Amazon.com doesn't sell and ship themselves, you may be screwed over. If I want that kind of risk I'll buy on eBay or some other site.

Oh, I see. Thank you for explaining.

Which is odd, I deliberately avoid buying from Amazon themselves (because of their insistence on packaging >1 DVD/Game ordered too close together in such a way it doesn't fit in a letterbox), but I buy >300 items per year off them via the independent traders, and go for months at a time without a problem, and even then Amazon is fine with refunding without any quibbles if the seller doesn't sort it out themselves. Maybe the US version is less strict with dodgy traders than the UK branch?
