FTFA: The imam had held up slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. as an example of a man to emulate, recalled one worshiper who would give his name only as Muhammad. Enraged, Tamerlan stood up and began shouting, Muhammad said. "You cannot mention this guy because he's not a Muslim!" Muhammad recalled Tamerlan shouting, shocking others in attendance.

Well, don't they also follow the new and old testaments, plus adding on their own book and dogma? I mean, really, when you get down to fundamentals, aren't Muslims just another sect of Judeo-Christians like Mormons?

Uh, no. Islam generally sees Christianity and Judaism as incomplete, but not false. Lots of Islamic historical sermons and theological literature takes issues and examples raised by Christian and Jewish theologians and intellectuals quite seriously. Noah (Nur), Abraham (Ibrahim), Moses (Musa) and Jesus (Isa) are four of the five most people who ever lived, according to the Islamic tradition.

Any member of a major religion who reads the texts literally is going to be shunned by most of their fellow practitioners, much of that stuff is pure crazy if you read it as literal truth.  Not all that many Christians today argue that the earth is only 6,000 years old, and the ones that don't tend to make fun of the ones that do.

I've always been curious about what would happen if a mosque here in the U.S. discovered a terrorist in their congregation. Would they expose him to police to try and save face or try to handle it internally to not further the Muslim stereotype?

I'm starting to wonder if the older brother had developed some kind of mental illness, as opposed to being radicalized from the outside. His odd behavior started 4-5 years ago, which is the right timeline/age frame for schizophrenia or other issues.

Furthermore, that 6000 year old thing *isn't in the actual text anywhere*. NO WHERE does it really state a date. That number was calculated by a catholic priest in the middle ages by guessing the ages of characters in the bible etc etc.

I've long thought that religious people have to know that much of what they believe is bull.  It seems like a lot of doublethink to me.

Lots of Islamic cultural centers have developed ongoing working relationships with the local police and FBI since the first WTC bombing in the 1990s. But there are also areas where there is a lot of animosity between them, especially where the FBI has been accused of spying on perfectly legal activities and failing to investigate hate crimes like shootings and arson attacks against mosques.

They turn them over to police:
The undercover FBI informant - a convicted forger named Craig Monteilh - then drove off for 5 a.m. prayers at the Islamic Center of Irvine, where he says he spied on dozens of worshipers in a quest for potential terrorists.

Since the 2001 terrorist attacks, the FBI has used informants successfully as one of many tactics to prevent another strike in the United States. Agency officials say they are careful not to violate civil liberties and do not target Muslims.

In the Irvine case, Monteilh's mission as an informant backfired. Muslims were so alarmed by his talk of violent jihad that they obtained a restraining order against him.

... A few days later, Ayloush got an anguished phone call from Niazi and the other man in the car.

"They said Farouk had told them he had access to weapons and that they should blow up a mall,'' Ayloush recalled. "They were convinced this man was a terrorist."

Ayloush reported the FBI's own informant to the FBI.
