I hated that song because to me this was the Divinyls

That being said, it's incredibly sad news.

Sad news. I was working as a strip club DJ when this song came out. Imagine the memories it brings back...

Every time I read "died at home surrounded by friends," I get this mental picture of a person in bed with a bunch of people standing in a semi -circle around it.   The people standing are all waiting for the person to die and the person in bed is thinking"don't want to keep my friends waiting better hurry up and die so we can get going."

StrikitRich: 53 is too young to die.

Really? When you think about it, it's more than half a century.  That's quite enough life.  Not to say she was very old or had it coming or whatever, but 53 isn't exactly young for the human body even with modern medicine.  Yeah, we more or less trend towards 80 these days, but really, what quality of  life are you going to have in your 70's or 80's?  7 is too young to die, I'd give you that 25 is too young to die, but 53 really isn't all that bad for a lifespan.

Their 1st album 'Desparate' came out when I was a jr in highschool and was awesome.  'All The Boys In Town' is a pop masterpiece.  When 'I Touch Myself' came out I thought they sold out, but now I realize that there was so much more worse music out there then I was sadly mistaken.  She had the hot school girl thing going on way before Brittany and she rocked to boot.  You will be missed hot glowing mic stand lady!

I'm 44, and my youngest won't be out of high school either when I'm 53, so I plan to be around a LOT longer than that. I seem to have some genetics on my side--I had two great-aunts who lived to 100; my dad would still be around but for complications from a supposedly minor surgery that took him at 81, and mom is currently self-sufficient at 81. In a different world, Ira Howard would be paying me to reproduce.

/But I could be hit by a cement truck tomorrow.

You are all blinded by your wicked lust and evil thoughts. Her life was meant to serve as a warning. You do as she said and "touch yourself" and you risk a double dose of evil. Lay down thy rod. Ladies, only if there's a camera running are you allowed. And send me the video so I can double check it for you, just to be safe.

I've known quite a few people who have had very fulfilling lives in their 70s and 80s, traveling, spending time with family and friends, starting romantic relationships (yeah, they do that), etc.  Honestly, in many ways a much happier life than I have.

As far as 53 goes, I wonder if you know any 53-year-olds.  Most of the ones I do aren't really living a life much different than someone who is 33 except perhaps with a little more money and avoiding some of the stupid shiat.

She was Christina Hendricks before Christina Hendricks was cool.

I was just starting to get a sense for the world when this video came out and that sort of female Angus Young-ish outfit - kinda Catholic schoolgirly with the blouse and the black, low-cut "dress" and the short, short skirt - yeah, it had a big effect.

She had a big impact on "sexy," even if only for a fleeting moment.  Rest well, Chrissy.  You reached the top of your game and accomplished what you set out to do.

//once active athlete, now random bag of aches

You both just made me feel a little less alone in this world. I will be 35 this year, and I am not enjoying it. And to stay on topic, RIP Divinyls singer - you were talented and sexy, and though I complain about feeling old at 34 I know in my heart that 53 is too young.

The song was a pretty good slab of pop cheese, but what really gets me about it is her vamping in the outro: "I touch myself. I touch myself, I touch myself. I honestly do..."

I like that: 1) she anticipated the skpetical listener who says "you say you touch yourself, but I bet you don't"; and 2) that it's important to her to persuade that skeptic.

gadian: Not to say she was very old or had it coming or whatever, but 53 isn't exactly young for the human body even with modern medicine.

Won't someone think of the atoms? I mean, can you imagine a 53 year old carbon atom? It must be tired!
We should get rid of these atoms and make sure no one uses them again. Imagine how confusing it must be for a cell in a thirty year old to get a 53 year old's atom, and then finding out it's actually 14 billion years old?

2013-04-22 12:40:45 PM

gadian: but 53 really isn't all that bad for a lifespan.

My dad was 68 the year he died, he died in July same year my eldest daughter was born in August.
Would have given anything if he could have just lived 6 weeks or so longer.
Age is relative.
/cancer sucks.

meanmutton: gadian: StrikitRich: 53 is too young to die.

I'm a 54 year old and doing quite well, thank you.

Breast cancer and MS... that's harsh.

I'm embarrassed to admit I had no idea 'I Touch Myself' was about masturbation when it first came out because I never listened to the words. All i could focus on was Chrissy's boobs, which she flaunted with absolutely no shame. She could have sang 'blah blah blah' like Alex Lifeson at the RNRHOF and I wouldn't have noticed.

They are along the lines of industrial/hard rock. Good Music actually and really awesome live shows including piercing on stage, bondage, fetish BDSM shows. The lead singer is fine as hell.

Another Government Employee: Cheron: Every time I read "died at home surrounded by friends," I get this mental picture of a person in bed with a bunch of people standing in a semi -circle around it.   The people standing are all waiting for the person to die and the person in bed is thinking"don't want to keep my friends waiting better hurry up and die so we can get going."

That, sadly, is not that far off the mark.

Sorry to hear. In all seriousness Im a biologist. We are freaking light years from solving cancer. People biatch about no money in the cure, only in treatment. Well, thats because we dont know how it all works yet. The human body has like a million hormonal pathways, a lot of which act alone and on each other to trigger lots of reactions in the body. Were farking clueless on how it all still works but believe me, scientist are after a cure not just treatment,

The problem is I do not believe the technology to cure cancer even exists yet. In my professional opinion. We want that Nobel prize, The first scientist to cure cancer will win a Nobel prize and go down in history and be in textbooks in 300 years.

In Science

Scientist Ego > Money.    That Nobel prize is the super bowl of Science.

Thats how my uncle died last week of liver cancer in bed with a house full of people, 9 kids, 19 grand kids, 3 great grandkids and god knows how my nieces and nephews. On the 15th 2 days before he died my aunt was at post office and realized the long lines were for tax day. So she hurried home and told him that today was tax day his response "I dont care, what are they gonna do to me now?"

vudukungfu: cretinbob: //yes I was a music snob at 13 too

At 13 for me it was 1969. It was all I could do to stay awake, surfing the radio bands late at night, listening to every new thing. And there was a lof of diversity out there.

And that's why the 60's and the 80's were such a great time for music, it was incredibly diverse.

//The Genitorturers aren't "modern" anything, but I'm from west central Florida, so like The Spooky Kids I remember when they were an opening band.
