Its not the bogus publishers and shady bots, its the flashing banners, or the popups, or the auto-play audio/video, or the five ads on a page, or the...shall I go on?

Fark feeds our squirrel with revenue from ads, please whitelist us in adblock/noscript/your-ad-blocker-of-choice!  (Read more) Or please consider joining TotalFark.

I see this because I don't trust advertisers and at this point I never will.  Sorry taskforce, while I'm sure you mean well; that ship has sailed, rammed the iceberg and sank many years ago.  There is no salvaging your reputation.

I think I had one of these bots running on my system.

Zone alarm was showing large amounts of internet activity when I opened a browser. I used tcpview
to see what was happening, and it was pounding ip addresses related to advertiser sites.
I used process explorer and found it was running inside a copy of svchost that was started
up as a user process instead of a system process. The code was hidden in a subdirectory
under the system recycler directory.

I used ComboFix to clean it up.

It was really eating into my bandwidth, but other than that the only symptom was a
hijacked search engine homepage. I use duckduckgo, and that was replaced with a fake.

Hope that helps anyone else who has to deal with one of theses bots.

The ad industry accusing someone else of shady practices is like Stalin calling Hitler a murderer.

Seriously, go pound sand you dewsh bags.

Not sure "uphill battle" quite covers that particular struggle. Maybe.."bottom of the well with a broken leg, no rope, and the well walls are covered in WD40?"
