I wouldn't put "The Next Day" on that top shelf of Bowie's finest with albums like "Ziggy Stardust" or "Low" or even "Scary Monsters", but it certainly did show that he's still got something left in the tank and can still do a damn fine record.

Isn't it typically good practice to write a bunch of songs, and then pick just the best ones that coherently come together to make an album?

I remember when the studio released all of the songs that Nirvana didn't want in their studio albums on an album after Cobain's death. I think it was called Sliver or Silver or something. It was abhorrent.

They hadn't put out anything since Cobain's death that wasn't approved by the band and Ms. Love.

That said, Bowie hasn't released an album for over a decade.  I can't believe he stopped writing so he likely has a big backlog of material.
