Agreed. The oldest are also the first to throw themselves at the enemy when the colony is under attack, presumably because their loss would have less impact than a younger worker's.

in America, we throw the youngest ones (draft age starts with the 19 year olds first, then 20 year olds, then 18 year olds - if i remember correctly) into the War first.

Join the Air Force Enlisted ranks.  we let the officers (pilots) do the fighting.  we sit back safe behind enemy lines and drink beer.  the way it should be.  let the educated, smartest ones get all the 'glory'.

one of the reasons the youngest ones go first is because they don't have the economic means to pay off their CONgressmen like the older generations do.

the older the ant the less life it had left and the more dangerous the role it took.
That seems like a simple optimization of the return on investment from laying eggs and feeding larvae
