This Yankee fan always liked Big Papi.

And to top it off, on the FCC Twitter feed this is what FCC chairman Julius Genachowski said about Ortiz' swearing.

Good for him on this speech, but this Yankee fan can't stand him.

Now that is refreshing.  Too bad there's probably some pencil-pushing dork in accounting who will send the fine out to NESN anyway.

\totally had one of those "did he just say what I think he said" moments with it though

If it's all the same to you, I would appreciate it if the Red Sox started losing now, kthx

NESN's a cable channel, not over-the-air... there's really no reason there should be any sort of fine.

Mets Radio announcer Howie Rose was absolutely aghast at this, calling it disgusting and vile.

I like Rose, but in this case, fark him.

Has he ever been in a baseball dugout? If he has, then he's heard a hell of a lot worse things than the f-bomb and should shut his piehole.

Thanks for linking that. I was expecting some condemnation and vitriol. Expectations refreshingly NOT met.

Was watching it on my mlb.tv account.  I thought I must've misheard something with his accent, so I went to YouTube and somebody had already gotten it online.

I've never been a Papi fan, but I can see why Bostonians love him.

2013-04-20 07:32:51 PM
Pretty insensitive of subby to use the word "bomb" in the headline. This is our farking city. I am outraged.

I think he actually said 'FARKING city'

Wow, I was expecting it to be one of those slip-ups where the guy doesn't even realize he said it- he put a lot of mustard on the word "fark" there.

It sounded way too contrived, even for me. I've been a Red Sox fan since before I could walk, and even I was hoping for more of an emphasis on "our" farking city.

Still, the sentiment is definitely echoed by everyone I know and then some.

NoboruWatanabe: It sounded way too contrived,

I'm sure he wanted to emphasize the sentiment, but it wasn't contrived. Boston MADE Big Papi. Without Boston, Big Papi is just David Ortiz, utility infielder. He couldn't even land a local radio gig like Lou Merloni.

2013-04-20 09:09:25 PM
I have a couple of pals from Boston & from what I can tell from them, "farking" is just another verb/adjective/connector word up there.

That being said, it's just a word. If you're an adult, laugh it off. If you're a kid, ask your dad what it means so you can watch him squirm.

2013-04-20 09:15:22 PM
I was watching on ESPN and oddly they censored the whole line. I thought the audio went out. Friend on Boston though said that their feed was unaffected and he heard it live. Not sure if it was just a tape delay in my area or if I was waching it differently. No edit on the MLB network one either.

That was right at the start of the game.  In the 9th inning, he was describing a little kid in the stands with his father, and that drew him back to "think of the children!"

Ehhh....I wouldn't expect "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" out of Big Papi, but he's dangerously close to Idiocracy/"Amurika!" territory with that one.  You can be patriotic and appear intelligent.

NESN and MLB Network are cable channels. The FCC does not regulate cable or satellite channels. The tweet was a joke.

1. ESPN said it had the game on a five-second delay.

2. The FCC chairman is a Harvard Law grad, so he has ties to Boston.

3. Right on, Big Papi.

One of the most refreshing lines ever broadcast on live television!!

Old news. When Bono dropped the f bomb on the Grammies years ago, our Puritan overlords allowed for a difference between use as an adjective vs. a descriptive verb.

2013-04-20 11:56:34 PM
I'm hoping we as a society don't go back to the whole "Yeah, my city is farking hardcore/don't fark with us!" bullshiat we saw in the late 80s/early 90s. We went through this stupid shiat once before, resulting in a lack of compassion and empathy that took YEARS to overcome. Why do you think a d-bag like Andrew Dice Clay sold out ARENAS?

Don't start the witch hunt just yet. While I disagree with Rose his was the prevailing sentiment amongst his generation of broadcasters. They think of Baseball as a holy experience, one that encompasses family, traditional values and American exceptionalism.  They forget that the first words out of most Boston infants are: "farking Mom".

2013-04-21 12:09:00 AM
In a way I understand what Boston went through - tons of emotions and such going on, on the other hand if they didn't fine him - what happens when someone hits a walk off homer to clinch the playoff and drops an F-bomb? outrage?

/I don't really care, Big Papi is an Iconic person in Boston - if anyone else said it - I know they would get fine, frankly I dont think Papi would care, he rolls in money.

I didn't say it made you dumb; it sure doesn't make a person appear intelligent.  If it did, Bob Saget would be in Mensa.

HaywoodJablonski: Time to back Boston to win all major sports titles this year?

Why, so their fans will start bombing their own town in the hopes of that happening again?

/Congrats, Boston, you're the only town in America that would have attempted to capture people that planted a bomb at your city's signature event

New York teams went 0-4 the year of 9/11 (though the Nets and the Yankees did make it to their respective finals)
