Holy crap - one of these is just south of where I live.  Even though it is less than 100 yards from the state road, you can barely see it through the trees.  The wife and I have been meaning to hike over to check it out...

Those looked like one meter class enclosures at best, some looked like half that.

Historic preservation/renewal could turn a couple of these places into interesting shops/markets/restaurants, although location is always a big factor with these things - observatories are intended to be out of the way.  In some cases, it's probably better to just dismantle the structures and let nature take its course.

I accompanied a friend a couple of times when he used the old refractor at the Warner and Swasey Observatory on Taylor road, back when we were in school there at CWRU.
