barneyfifesbullet: This is why I laugh when some say now that CDs are going to disappear.

Hell, vinyl never disappeared. Many people want a hard copy, not just a file. And that's before you even get into the sound quality debate.

I sold all of my CDs (years of teen-aged and young adult scrimping and saving) after ripping them to FLAC. No I'm not here to argue sound quality. But it's a bit-perfect archive of the actual disc, able to be manipulated over and over again, such as deciding bitrates for your portable. With albums I can see wanting to own it, and that's how I approach my jazz fetish. After a particularly nasty day, nothing beats a glass of decent whiskey and some Horace Silver on vinyl. If I dressed as well I'd be an outtake from Mad Men. Or that guy Harvey in "Suits."

My other tastes? They don't require the warmth of vinyl. But jazz? Get of my lawn.

gwowen: b0rg9: buckler: On a side note, I had a Philip Glass album that had a skip, and didn't realize it for nearly 20 minutes.

That's hilarious.

The first time I heard "Sketches Of Spain" I was knocked out by how great Miles playing was on he up-tempo numbers. I had it on 45 RPM. Incidentally "Sketches Of Spain" sounds awesome at 45RPM.

I didn't quite spit my drink out, just inhaled liquid and enjoyed a few minutes of coughing.

First store was in the process of going out of business, so they had great deals on all the shiat no one else wanted to buy. Second store had no records, why the hell they are on the list I have no idea. Third store was so packed, and so late in the day, decided it wasnt worth it. Said "fark it" came home, fired up bit torrent....

The RSD folks need to update their farking store list

Oops. Sorry - I'm walking to Jive Time in Fremont. Probably only a mile and a half or two difference but there's a big hill in the way and it's sort of raining you know...

Unfortunately since the only place locally that *might* have vinyl is the antique store... no thanks. Doubt there's much good music in that place...

2013-04-20 08:26:36 PM
or you could skip the whole record store format and buy directly from the artist. If you enjoy atmospheric metal you can buy it straight from my bandcamp. Link in profile, heck you can even order physical copies from me.

Ten years ago I had the chance to buy a lathe, a Neumann with spare tubes and cutters. It was 1$ but I had to arrange the whole disassembly, crating, shipping and I didn't have place to set it up anyways, so it went to the next guy. Besides these things need to be on a solid concrete foundation, plus need helium for cooling the head.

Looks like I could have had a nice business punching out masters or directly cut vinyls...

/The engineering behind getting sound out of vinyl is fascinating

Didn't go but have been picking up some vinyl recently.

Latest acquisitions include:

Derek and the Dominoes-Layla (limited edition european import)
Miles Davis-Kind Of Blue
Black Sabbath-Master Of Reality
The Beatles-Revolver
Between The Buried And Me-The Silent Circus
Misfits-Die, Die, My Darling

All of these I own on CD as well, except for the Misfits record.
