I would consider this option if I had a local purveyor of vinyl. For me it's a minimum of 1.5 hours of driving, so most of my purchases are online.

/just got a VPI Traveler woo hoo

I can barely find a place that sells CDs.

Vinyl doesn't sound better, BTW. Hipster.

I was at a vinyl swap and picked up Sam Cooke Live at the Harlem Square Club.

There was a stack of lonely ABBA discs in the corner. It was sad.

I would've gone, but I had to work.
This posting is about 5 hours late for the Mountain Time Zone.  7 on the east.  You have to wake up early on Record Store Day.

I pre-ordered The National's new vinyl box set. Does that count?

Anyone who prefers vinyl also tends to:

1. Own a TV but haven't turned it on in years
2. Drink microbrewery beer
3. Watch Japanese children's cartoons on a Mac
4. Ride a bike to work wearing spandex stretch trousers
5. Read books at Starbucks
6. Claim to prefer girls with small breasts
7. Make snide remarks about Wal-Mart.
8. Walk past a smoker and force pretentious coughing noises
9. Take comfort in believing size doesn't matter
10. Feign disgust at the idea of eating a Big Mac

I didn't know. Looks like I'll be doing just that. Thanks, Subby!

I don't even have a decent player anymore, but I still buy Peel Session EPs when I come across them.  Which is pretty rare now.

I love that format.  Too bad it seems like hardly anything is coming out on it anymore -- but I haven't been keeping up, really.

I recently purchased a used Pioneer Elite universal player, so now I can buy DVD-A's as well.  That widens what's available a bit.

2013-04-20 02:39:45 PM
I would, but my horse is sick and my buggy is in for repairs. Perhaps I'll telegraph the local establishment and have them put a cylinder of "Barbershop Bob and His Quartet" on hold for me.

2013-04-20 02:42:21 PM
I will, subby, but what does that have to do with record stores?

Ohhhhh!  That kind of vinyl!  Well, I guess it would give me something to keep my mind tied up, as it were...

Yeah, but ....no. I think the description you're looking for is "over the age of 35".

You know, old people.

There's no simpler way to announce, "I am a pretentious douche," than acting like the format of your shiatty musical choices transforms the whole experience of listening to it (short of just walking around telling people that you're a pretentious douche).

You aren't talking about comparing a CD to a Midi file or something, your friggin record sounds just the same as a digital recording, you cannot hear the ones and zeros I promise.

This is why I laugh when some say now that CDs are going to disappear.

Hell, vinyl never disappeared. Many people want a hard copy, not just a file. And that's before you even get into the sound quality debate.

I am not near a record store, because I do not live in Portland.

I am, however, near a bad of weed.  Happy 4/20, everyone!

What's a "record"?

2013-04-20 02:55:27 PM
When I was a kid, I had a lot of vinyl.  I hated it as it was such a pain in the @$$ to maintain.  I had the cleaning fluid, the static gun, non scratch cleaning pad, and needle brush.  You'd get one scratch on your record and you were farked.  You really had to treat each record like....well.....an easily scratched piece of plastic.  I would make tapes, with dolby a/b noise reduction and they were never excellent sound quality.

When CDs came into being, loved them and got rid of most of my albums.  Still have some, just for the cover art.  Now with downloadable music, will never go back to vinyl.  My brother in law raves about the sound quality of vinyl, but he's too young to have grown up with it.  The convenience of downloadable music  makes up for the loss of sound quality IMHO.

Happy Hipster Day everyone! Remember after going to the record store to pick up the new vinyl album of the Shoegaze Hip Hop Electronica Revival band 'The Purple Nurples', make sure to take your Chuck Taylor shoes and grandpa hat over to the local coffeehouse 'Drip' for a Vente Chocolatte with organic soy goat milk, and then later show up at your favorite revitalized dive bar (you know, the one with the bathroom with ice in the urinal and a 50's Chevy steering wheel nailed to the wall for authenticity) grab a can of Papst Blue Ribbon, moan over the fact that nothing is "real" anymore, and then shoot yourself!

/yes I am bitter

Yeah, a brother of mine had a great vinyl collection (well, has). As soon as the tech was available  I set him up to digitize everything so he could listen while keeping them in pristine condition.

On a side note, I had a Philip Glass album that had a skip, and didn't realize it for nearly 20 minutes.

I'm 2000 miles away from Portland and there's a record store across the street. I've never been in, but every time I walk by there are a few people shopping. Of course I also have like 5 used bookstores within a 10 minute walk including one that opened a year ago and is still open somehow. That one confuses me. I assume it's a front for something illegal. I mean, who opens a used bookstore in a neighborhood saturated with them in 2012 and makes it work?

2013-04-20 03:03:00 PM
Well I buy most of my music on CD even though I have an MP3 player,

I pretty much only just buy a MP3 if its like a song that I would have 0 interest in any other song on the album. The CD is a hard copy that I wont lose if my hard drive crashes or my membership expires, also if you rip a CD it is less compressed than like 99% of downloadable MP3s where it will sound better.

All my vinyl is authentic back when the major labels was still releasing vinyl stuff. I bought vinyl instead of cassettes up till the major labels quit making it in about the early to mid '90s, and bought bunches of rediculously cheap vinyl in the pawn shops back when you just about couldn't give away vinyl in the '90s when CD players was getting affordable. I haven't bought any new pressing of vinyl lately.

Just got done reading Fish's Facebook post regarding Record Store Day.  It's a marketing gimmick.  The artists get squat despite the songs being classics (Marillion gets 18p from a 16 pound sale of Grendel today) and very few people have access to the stores involved.  As a result most of the records get resold to collectors at a profit by speculators.  E-bay already has many of these records listed.

Fish specifically asked if he could sell copies to his fans over his web site and was denied.  As such, his advice for fans of whatever genre, buy from the artist whenever possible, otherwise the $$ only goes to the suits.
