"Meh" is a word I personally love. A politer way of saying "I don't give a damn". Scoonthorpe was a new one to me. I added something to my useless trivia bank. :)

Author was trying too hard.
Avatar as a term was around long before the internet became common.
Hashtag is a vile disease.
Never heard of scoonthorpe problems before that article.
I see their point with trolling, but not sure why they consider it one of the '10 best words the internet gave us"
Also never heard of "Cupertino" for autocorrect fails before. Is this guy just making shiat up?
Geeks was a pretty common term long before the internet.
I can see memes themselves being a great thing the internet gave us, but the internet didn't give us the term.
Meh, and LOL are about the only two out of their list that really qualify as terms the internet has given us.

10 most abused words on the internet...

Trolling is misused by so many folks who simply don't agree with what's being said, or by those who are attempting to emulate actual trolls and failing.

The failing bit is key.  If you attempt to waterski, but you never get up on those skis and instead lose your bathing suit as you're dragged 50 yards, you didn't waterski.

The headline says "words the Internet has given us" followed by a list of words that even the author acknowledges pre-date the Internet.

What was the point of the article?

I'm almost certain that my Yiddish-speaking grandparents were using the exclamation "meh" when I was a kid back in the '60s. It meant much the same thing it does now: not actively distasteful (that would have been "feh") but absolutely nothing to get excited about.

"Meh" comes from the Simpsons, you know, that show that everyone on the internet hates now.

When I first started here, I had no clue about the filter, and kept trying to "correct" what I was typing over and over again. I was wondering why everyone in the thread was laughing at me.

I've never heard it called...whatever but I've noticed recently that now that people are posting from their phones that there are fewer misspelled words. Just a lot of correctly spelled wrong words.

Hashtags are stupid f*cking things. The others, sure. All of them are otherwise useful to describe actions or objects online (or in reality in a few cases), but hashtags are simply for connecting tweets. Using hashtags elsewhere is stupid.

Which is a scourge that seems to plague all too many lazy internet journalists who rely on spell-check instead of editors.

Back in the days there were distinct meanings for "trolling" and "flaming" that set them apart from simple contradiction, name calling, and hate speech (all which now seem conflated).

Then the population expanded to the point where "newbies" no longer exist and "only trolling" has become the excuse for saying something stupid or bigoted.

People who need to confirm that they really exist will say anything to get others to respond to them.

Oh, certainly not. You just weren't informed. I was being stubbornly and obstinately ignorant.

Trolling was at the "height" of its form, I think, during the USENET era, when people would crosspost to rec.pets.cats, rec.cooking, and soc.culture.korea, requesting the best Korean recipes for cat meat. Anger all around.

You are experiencing a Scoonthorpe correction-error.

Also fun are:

"It is a bit chilly in here."

Simpsons came out in 89. Meh has gotta be in the first few seasons so it predates the internet. And I haven't even read the article yet.

Are you just pretending to be stupid or are you so stupid that you think the internet didn't exist before you joined AOL?
