Because you're a litigious attention whore?

Question:  'Why I'm suing my gym over their sexist women-only hours'

Answer: To make some quick cash.

But that doesn't make for a good headline does it.

Do men get a discount?

2013-04-20 08:34:46 AM
we live in an age of acceptable misandry

That's where I was done reading.

This guy is a serious douchebag but you have to admit that no one would stand for it if it was the other way around and they banned women.

FTFA
Adding insult to injury, they still charge them the same full-price membership fee as women

Some guy in Massachusetts discovered the same loophole -- sex discrimination is technically illegal when men are discriminated against. The legislature responded with a law allowing unisex gyms. (See MGL 272-92A, unnumbered text after clause 10.)

I am pretty fat and self conscious about my appearance in the gym. But if there were men only hours at the gym, I don't think that would help. I would need me only hours.

I am wondering if women feel the same way? They do the most judging of each other. Or is it that you don't want to get hit on? A pair headphones does wonders for sending the message "leave me alone"

2013-04-20 08:54:37 AM
How about you just don't go to that gym?

2013-04-20 09:09:12 AM
I think the gym has a point. I mean, when I go to the gym I go with all of my male buddies and point at all the fatties, openly mocking them. I loudly shout out the nicknames we come up with: "Fatlicious", "Chocolate Pudding", "She-Beast". I mean, I'm not sure why these women go out in public at all, much less the gym.

So of course ALL MEN behave like this.

Oh good he can just go somewhere else, but what about his taxes going towards a gym that discriminates against him

442 hours / 365 days = about 1 hours 10 minutes a day. Which seems strange, unless it is the timing of when those women-only hours are valid. If it is something like 5:30 to 7PM every weekday, which is prime workout hours for a lot of people then I could see where it would be a problem.

The other point is when did these hours start? Was the gym doing this before he became a member, so he signed up knowing there was some time that he would not be able to go? Or did this start later?

While I can agree that it seems that men get the short end of the straw in quite a few cases like these, making a fight out of this one is not going to help.

It also assumes that all men in the gym are straight, when many of them are gay
Furthermore, when I explained that men typically die before women, thus have a greater need to access fitness services
Tellingly, the gym's policy also assumes that only men can objectify the opposite sex

You know, for someone concerned about his male rights, he sure seems to have an awfully Sahara-ish vagina.

Forcing men - whether 70 year-old pensioners or 13 year-old boys who attend with their mothers - to leave a room because of their gender

Wait, are they keeping you out of the whole gym, or just telling you use can't use the weight room?  Cause guess what, you're not allowed to use the lady's showers either.
We're talking about what, an hour a day?  Go do laps around the parking lot.

Marcus Aurelius: What an utter douchebag.

Okay, he's almost certainly a douchebag, that does not make him wrong. I think that minimizing discrimination based on sex, race, religion, etc is good and treating people as equals should be encouraged unless public health and safety absolutely precludes it. If the article is correct, which considering it the Daily Mail may be a very big if, then he has a legitimate point.

There is an assumption, especially in yoga classes in our area, that men would join up simply to leer at the women.  I doubt that this is true, but there you go.  I know a guy at a local university who had had some heart valve replacements due to a chronic condition.  Obviously, he couldn't do too much in the way of strenuous exercise, so he tried to sign up for yoga.  He eventually got in, but he had to bring in doctor's notes, etc., etc.

Yes because you're at the gym 8300 hours a year and need those extra 442.

2013-04-20 10:09:23 AM
Women's only hours are fine so long as there are men's only hours too during similar times at different days.

Separate but equal.

2013-04-20 10:11:07 AM
I formally complained to the general manager, asking him to change the policy with one of three alternatives: A) maintain a women's hour but introduce a men's alternative for fairness, B) keep women's hour (and only women's hour) but annually charge men less, or C) scrap single-gender sessions altogether.

He is showing a serious lack of creativity. It would be more fun to go with option D) Move women's hour to between 2 and 3 am.

Warlordtrooper: If it were the other way around there would be an angry mob

If it were the other way around, a lot of people would wonder who asked for that.

I bet a lot of gyms could ask if people wanted gender-specific hours and find out that a significant number of women and virtually no men did. Really, this seems like complaining that their aren't tampon vending machines in the men's room. Sure, we don't have that, but we also didn't want it.

I would be upset if they tacked a "tampon dispenser fee" on my health club bill. I mean, what if someone saw it?

Say what you want but discrimination is discrimination, especially considering the article states that male fitness instructors are not allowed to work during the women only hours.

I think part of the value of a gym membership is the ability to go there when you want.  This guy is a drama-queen in the extreme, but it isn't unreasonable to expect to get the same service if you are paying the same price.  If you aren't getting the same service, the reasonable thing would be to either demand the same service, or demand a discount.

Remember, what ever time the gym is open to you, you need to announce your anticipated arrival in a loud voice approximately 26 minutes prior.

Karma dictates that each 26 minutes announcement is deducted from the 442 hours you are not welcome in the gym.

Why would anyone say no to a less crowded gym when they're working out? I'd vote to only allow men over 6 feet tall that weigh between 170 and 190 lbs if it were an option just because my workout is quicker when I don't have to wait for equipment.

2013-04-20 10:34:32 AM
They have women only gyms one of the is called Curves.
And way back when they had a woman's only section at the Ballys. It was closed off and had everything the free weight section had and then some. The ladies never used it. What good is working out and looking good in your skin tight workout gear if no one can see you?!

Odds are this is a stunt. If you don't like how a private business is doing business go somewhere else!

So you'd be ok with whites, asians, blacks, Christian, or men only hours? Of course not, because that would be racist, sexist, or insensitive to other religions! Geez the hypocrisy is strong with you people. It's only "...ist" when THEY do it!

Also, women NEVER try to get access to men only groups, right? Oh, right...because they do try to invade male spaces and have been very successful in gaining access to historically male "safe places." See the Masters and the Boy Scouts as examples of some.

/yes, you do sound that retarded

2013-04-20 10:41:04 AM
I'll be honest, I kinda agree.  My gym has a women only room, but it's not a huge imposition.  I do find it kind of annoying though.  It feels like an implicit assumption that if those women worked out with me, they assume that I would immediately start drooling and leering at their boobs.  Lady, I'm way too fat to have time for your boobs while I am nearly dying on the treadmill.

EvilEgg: I am pretty fat and self conscious about my appearance in the gym. But if there were men only hours at the gym, I don't think that would help. I would need me only hours.

Most of the people at the gym aren't going to think "what's that fattie doing here?" They're thinking "good on that guy for trying to get into shape." The ones that do judge you are probably douchebags who are going to have back problems in 10 years from doing nothing but chest and bicep workouts.

I agree. I think the guy's a douchebag, but I wish the article said what those hours were. If they were primetime, then that might make the gym unsuable if it's "closed" at the only hour you can get to it during the day.

/misses my apartment complex that had a gym in the basement

spongeboob: The use of Feminazi, that is like an admission of trolling isn't it?

I would say no actually.
There is a subset of the Feminist movement that is doing irreparable damage to the movement and generating misplaced contempt for the movement as a whole. I think it would be best for the movement if that subgroup was seen as separate from the core..
Then again, I think feminists is a horrible name, it basically states 'we exist to further women's rights' when the name should state 'we exist to ensure equal  treatment between the sexes'.
I can respect a group that tries to end pay discrimination. I can't respect a group that has (in some areas) tried to do silly things like remove urinals from men's bathrooms because pissing while standing is an egregious 'display' of male privilege and thus is repressing women. That is why the useful people should separate from the useless people.

/person who said Feminazi is probably trolling though.
//Most people who say nazi are trolling.
