FirstNationalBastard: The subtitles on British DVDs are almost as bad. They leave out tons of dialogue.

That's true of all subtitles. They are a compromise between maximum coverage of what is being said and being able to read it in the time that people are actually speaking.

Ooohh, a CC thread.
CSS
My sister and I often use the CCs, especially when watching things with a lot of accents or jargon.  Of course, thats fairly hit or miss.
One night, we are watching a Dr. Who episode, and the CC was completely farked, now accurate, now gibberish.
We kept seeing "  pe eful m  ic" pop up.  WTF ??
a later viewing revealed it was a hash of "suspenseful music".
But in our lexicon CC mistakes will forever be... peeful mic.

IPA = India Pale Ale.  It means you have to be drunk on them to make sense of the translation.

I sometimes use it because my hearing is going because I'm getting older and have worked in loud industries for far too many years. For news and other live programs, I can understand mistakes creeping in. But when it happens during programs which have been in the can for months, I can't help thinking, "WTF?" It's inexcusable, especially during movies.

IPA is not industry-specific. Chording keyboards are not industry-specific. They're used by court stenographers, for example.

You've never looked up the pronunciation of a word? Wondered how live broadcast subtitles are done, given that no one can type fast enough to keep up?

It's not common knowledge.

Hmm. I know about it. I'm not involved in live TV subtitling.
