That's a lot of viewers who are going to be terribly disappointed that they missed seeing Paula Abdul on Idol again.

American Idol has run its course. The new winners are seeing diminishing returns, the show has gone from two music execs and a celebrity mentoring talent to invented drama between celebrity judges and newer competitors are stealing the thunder.

American Idol can lurch along on inertia for a few more seasons, but judge salary inflation and diminishing returns on talent will throw the cost benefit ration off. Hell, more people will try the YouTube route and get famous in a few years and American Idol will be seen as a slow, pointless anachronism.

Is Big Bang Theory doing better these days? I just looked at their Wikipedia entry and see that they are at an all time high for their viewer numbers.

I haven't watched it since (I believe) season 4, something about the scripting that season just turned me off to the whole series.

It's the Uncanny Valley effect, right?

Not that I've ever watched the show, but Minaj looks more plastic than the Autons.

Ed Willy: American Idol has run its course. The new winners are seeing diminishing returns,

That was the point I tried to make a few years ago.  Any show like that has a certain limited number of "total" audience that will be interested in it, and support the winning "artists."  At some point, after you have accumulated a number of "winners" (and others who claimed fame from their appearance, but weren't winners, Clay Aiken for example) the amount of dilution becomes too great.  Also, the larger the number of "winners" who fail to maintain album sales, acquire airplay, or maintain a following to sustain concert appearances the faster the public's disinterest will grow.  (Has anyone from that show ever really had a major chart topper or break-out single?)

At some point it was destined to hit the wall.  It's also inevitable that at some point the public's taste in music would change and whatever winner of this glorified karaoke contest wouldn't have many who cared about their style of music in the first place.

I admit I took a slight interest in this season, but only to see if Lazaro would benefit from a trollish Promote-The-Trainwreck campaign. He didn't so fark 'em.

farkeruk: These shows were never about the music. They've always been about the drama.

Has the show ever really been about music? If they want to call it a "singing competition," fine. But there's a whole lot more to music than singing the living hell out of a song. That's why I get offended when they try to invoke "music" or "artistry" in their little exhibition. The ability to do gratuitous vocal gymnastic for three minutes doesn't even scratch the surface to being a competent musician.

Bobcat is one of my favorite writer/directors. He taps into what I'm thinking, sometimes. I've never disliked one of his movies.

I don't watch live broadcast TV most of the time. I haven't watched it steadily in years, basically because the choice between American Idolatry and Nerdface Minstrel Show isn't any choice at all, and that same choice exists on every network, every night.

I do watch new shows, but that's why I have the Internet. Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and Navi-X keep me happy. It doesn't hurt to have a decent VPN or two, too. Having an IP in the UK when I need one makes it easy to get shows via their iPlayer. No ads, either.

But to actually sit down, flip channels, and sit through crap in order to watch commercials every ten minutes? F♥ck that. TV has become 95% banal, and just couldn't justify it anymore. My ex-wife was a channel-surfer, but now that she's gone, I don't even pay for cable or have an antenna hooked to my TV.

Currently, I'm watching a nice mix of old and new. Doctor Who, of course, but I'm catching up on Arrested Development. I manged to get my hands on every episode of Max Headroom, and even though I watched it when it aired, I will watch it again now that I'm quite a bit older (and besides, Amanda Pays is easy on the eyes). I tried to watch Firefly, but I'm stuck at the fifth episode... It's just not clicking with me. I'm going back through DS9, too. The Walking Dead and several Adult Swim shows are entertaining, too.   I still haven't started Breaking Bad. I plan to, soon.

So yeah, I don't need an antenna or cable. I didn't even need them to keep up on the Boston manhunt news. I had Fark, that nice guy who posted the scanner stream, and live streams of the local Boston news. Why the hell would I need CNN or Fox News? Hell, they were both so far behind and clueless that we Farkers knew the cops were tossing flashbangs while the cable news people were saying "And now we just heard some gunshots!"

There's not much on TV worth watching. What is worth it will be available later. Without ads.

/Mostly, I just hate commercials.

Wow, I hadn't thought about Max Headroom in a long time. That was really ahead of its time. Based on from what little I remember of it that is. Yeah there are maybe 4 shows I watch regularly, mostly the ones you listed, all but Psych are on hiatus (farking Archer's done too). I'm mostly a movie guy.

Now's the perfect time to start watching Breaking Bad. The final 1/2 season's about to start and it's not the type of show that you want to wait a week in between episodes. I started watching last season and blasted through the first 4 seasons fairly quickly. Try to avoid spoilers.

Well to be fair, I don't think anyone expected it to be popular. I'm sure it offended some, hit a little too close to home for others, wasn't really marketed and was released during one of our many shootings. Maybe it'll be a cult thing.

The biggest problem this season is not Minaj. It's the completely transparent "a girl will win" storyline they've had all year. After 5 or 6 seasons with a male winner, they completely stacked the deck in favor if the girl singers. They also didn't have a single rock or folk singer in the top 20.

There are even more than that if your criteria is "major chart topper or break-out single."

Clay Aiken had a good five or six year run with a double-platinum debut album and a platinum follow-up.  He became only the fourth artist to have his first three albums debut in the Billboard Top 5

Josh Gracin had a #1 country single.

Katharine McPhee is a regular on a primetime network show.

Taylor Hicks, for as much crap as he gets, had a platinum debut album.

And Philip Phillips's "Home" has sold about a billion copies and is on every commercial.

Well, then... You see what I mean?

Television sucks first-hand. Some shows are definitely better without the frequent pauses.
