The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities - the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation.

i can't imagine the level of self control that ambassador had to exercise not to include the words "you farking morons" at the end of that statement. I salute him.

Two bear scientists, one from Chechnya and one from the Czech Republic, go into the wilderness to study a pair of grizzlies, one of each sex.  When they fail to return, two rangers investigating their disappearance find the female bear eating the last bits of the Chechen scientist.  One ranger turns to the other, and asks, "Do you realize what this means?"

"The Czech is in the male."

As many I was deeply shocked by the tragedy that occurred in Boston earlier this month. It was a stark reminder of the fact that any of us could be a victim of senseless violence anywhere at any moment.

As more information on the origin of the alleged perpetrators is coming to light, I am concerned to note in the social media a most unfortunate misunderstanding in this respect. The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities - the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation.

As the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman noted in his message to President Obama, the Czech Republic is an active and reliable partner of the United States in the fight against terrorism. We are determined to stand side by side with our allies in this respect, there is no doubt about that.

Please don't bomb us.

"Stupid" is an awful tag subby. Should be obvious why no nation state would want to be associated with this. Plenty of social and economic advantages to being on good terms with the U.S. and they all remember what happened the last time a nation tried to protect those who carried out terrorist attacks against the U.S.  Even the Taliban were very quick to say they had nothing to do with this.  They had a taste of the U.S. military and want no part of it anymore.  Now they will finally get to re-exert control in the region, not so if they came into the crosshairs of the U.S. military again.

Too be fair the nation/states being discussed have less population than some individual U.S. states, less land area than flyover states, and aren't exactly in the international spotlight much.  I'm wondering how many random Czech youth posting on twitland could point out Idaho and Iowa on an unlabeled globe and discuss their cultural and economic differences.  Exact same thing.  Small part of a large continent.

Yes, I know I would fit in better with the cool crowd here if I simply said "OMFG weur soo stooped.  Durr!"

You haven't paid much attention to the news since 1994 have you? Chechnya has fought a revolution, been invaded twice, had a couple of major terrorist incidents and massacres, has been the center of a (depending on who you ask) genocide, been a major concern with nuclear proliferation in the wake of the fall of the Soviet Union, been a major concern in the growth of Islamic militants in Eurasia.

It's a pretty big deal internationally.

The way he phrased it is the best part. We are central Europeans and this is Russia's fault, as always.

The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities - the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation.

This. More evidence our schools are failing our children. There has been a lot of history being made in that part of the world in the last 20 years. If you were to ask your average college freshman how many hours he spent learning about Chechnya or any country bordering Chechnya: I'll bet the answer would be "zero". I'd be interested in knowing how many hours Russia / USSR get during high school. 3? 4? I'll bet that's even exaggerating it.

ArcadianRefugee: signedlongint: This is unsurprising. I had a geography teacher in 2009 during high school that thought that the Czech Republic was Czechoslovakia.

Mostly because the Czech Republic was Czechoslovakia.

The Czech Republic was, in fact, half of Czechoslovakia. The other half is Slovakia.

While I am on the subject do let me remind you that Scotland IS NOT England, nor is it a part of England. And neither is Wales. Great Britain is an island that contains all three countries and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a political entity that is, well, exactly what it says on the tin.

Thank god for smart people pointing out the obvious to the world's blathering ignoramuses. If all smart people stopped helping complete numb-nuts, all the said numb-nuts would starve to death. Or choke on a fork. Or try to drink rubbing alcohol. At first this seems great. A world without drooling morons. The same drooling morons who bought useless crap like "the snuggie" and anything else advertised. The same idiots who stuffed their faces with Doritos Tacos, something no human being was meant to eat. The same dumbfarks who made twilight, transformers, and countless other stupid movies. The same bone brains who gleefully watched "honey boo boo", "the kardashians", and anything the history channel has recently made. Without the impulse purchases of 10 million pinheads, the world's economy would collapse!

You are so smrt that you can't see a distinction between the Americans who made the stupid mistake and those who didn't.  I'm not claiming that every American made the stupid mistake; it was just a few, but enough to make the ambassador nervous.

I've spent enough time outside of America (hence the Gaelic part of my fark handle) to know a thing or two about maps and such.  I even stayed in a hostel for several months with a bunch of Czech and Polish guys when I lived in Dublin.
