vento: How in the heck do you not have a day or two worth of food in your house?

It's Friday, payday for a lot of people.  I've been known to have next to nothing in the house -- certainly not a few days worth of meals - on the day before/day of payday. I'm sure that's not incredibly rare since most people structure their lives around when they get paid, and usually do the shopping on those days.

I always refill my medicine on a Tuesday, for example, because I get paid on Tuesdays and that's when I have the money I need for my prescriptions. I also grocery shop on Tuesdays.

I'm sure it was already covered in the thread but I don't have time to search and read: these guys father was interviewed for TV and said that if his other son is killed "all hell will break loose".

Allow me to go all "Typical American" and say: fark you, man.  Don't start nothing, won't be nothing.  Your sons killed a bunch of people in a terrorist act.  You don't get to call the shots and if you want to mess with us and unleash your version of "hell" just ask you other son how it worked out for him.  Oh wait, he's dead.  You can't ask him anything!

llachlan: Bullseyed: Rwa2play: Truther: I'll say it again, hope no one else is killed - including the alleged bomber...

This; If he's alive, the authorities will find out what the hell's in his head that made him and his brother do this.

They already know. It's ISLAM. They were crazy murderous Muslims. Just like 95% of all terrorists.

And yet, the worst act of terrorism on American soil before 9/11 was committed by white, middle class, native son Americans, who decided planting a bomb that would concentrate the blast at a daycare was a good idea. Crazy, yes. Muslim no.  In fact, it seems to me that the last few mass killings in the US were not committed by Muslims - and that a mosque was actually a target of an attack - committed by - you guessed it - a white American. IIRC, the DC sniper who terrorized that city was also an American, non-Muslim.

Considering the sheer population count of Muslims vs everyone else, there is no way you can say that 95% of terroristic acts have muslims to blame. Fanatics come in all colours and creeds. Well, except Navaho - they seem pretty chill.

The Hopi would disagree with you there.

So when will all the idiots who immediately jumped on the "teabagger" bandwagon going to admit they were wrong?

On one hand, longer this goes, the more worried I am that he broke the perimeter.

On the other hand, the semester before the VT shootings, we had a convict escape the hospital, kill a guard and make a break towards the tech campus. They spent hours looking for him following up leads and he was just laying low in the bushes trying not to move for the whole day. I can understand why it could take so long since that took a day and they have a much narrower area to cover.

In the Exordium series by Sherwood Smith and Dave Trowbridge, a pesz mas'hadni was a physician-torturer who specialized in torturing people to death, but being able to revive them despite having died, only to do the process over again. Five times was considered an inexpert pesz mas'hadni performance.

The original containment zone was only 2 blocks in each direction, and then they expanded to 4.  So as long as he ran straight, he was well out of the zone by the time they actually got it setup, and they delayed setting it up because they were busy making that one guy get naked in the middle of the road.

peter21: pdkl95: Wow. Such a charlie-foxtrot. Way to give in in to terrorism, America. Now everybody is going to copycat this mess, now that they've seen how easy it is to scare us into shutting down our own city.

It's from earlier in the week, but I highly recommend t">this essay by noted security expert Bruce Schneier on how important it is to refuse to be terrorized. Or, as Douglass Adams put it... "Don't Panic".

I lived in Boston for 14 years and have a bunch of friends there now. I get the sense from none of them that they're giving in to terrorism or fear. They are simply, willfully complying with authorities in an attempt to bring this suspect to justice.

So much this.... stuck in the house, don't like it much, but I do want them to catch the little farker

plcow: quizzical: ColKurtz: SultanofSchwing: styckx: JusticeandIndependence: styckx: How can these guys go door to door entering peoples homes at will and you're not allowed to refuse? People are basically locked in their homes.. It's martial law without being martial law

I don't think are just entering people's homes at will.

So far it's just a request to stay in your home.  There is no mandate.

CNN said if these guys knock on your door and you're not home they have ways of entering

I was wondering this too.  Completely out of my arse, but I'm guessing there's a judge in the command-post or something who is signing off on blanket warrants, or maybe whole batches of them in one warrant, and would be allowed in terrorist-style situations at least.

Exigent circumstances do not require a warrant. A city-wide manhunt qualifies.

Um no. Exigent circumstances are basically something even more than probable cause that allow you to go into a house.  Like a gunshot inside.  "We know he is somewhere in the city" is not exigent circumstances to go into a house.

They also don't even know whether he's there or not, just hoping.

Man, I've been listening to this police scanner for 8 hours, I think I will need to be put on the Boston PD payroll soon.

2013-04-19 03:53:24 PM
That's not exactly true (here in CO anyways), you can get a gun w/ a background check if you are from other states with which CO has reciprocation agreements for background checks (most of our adjacent states), but if you're from another country, there is a rather specific and lengthier process that you must go through (the last store I worked at sold guns, we had some really nice mexican guys who liked skeet shooting).

Not true.  At all.  Reciprocity agreements are for CCWs, not firearms purchases.  Unless you have an FFL, crossing state lines to buy a gun is a Felony.  Capital-F.

Background checks come AFTER prerequisites are met, thing like state-issued IDs in the state of purchase, checking the age of the purchaser, and making sure they're not drunk by requiring them to fill out a form BEFORE the dealer calls NICS.

The gun show loophole essentially amounts to private citizens doing PPT / P2P (private party  / person to person) transactions.  You see these all the time at gun shows: people "wear" their guns with a sign on it that says what they want (cash or trade).  Since there's nothing stopping one consenting party from looking the other way while another consenting party hands over money, THAT is the loophole.  THAT is the problem.  Responsible gun dealers won't look the other way, if for no other reason than to account for the serial number of the gun being sold.

It's kind of like the Viagra loophole.  It's a controlled substance.  It's illegal to buy without paperwork, but we all know it's sold that way everywhere.  The difference is, the results of an illegal Viagra purchase don't end lives and make headlines.

tl;dr - When performed, background checks prevent the disqualified from buying legal guns.  Listen to what i did NOT say in that sentence.
