Reminder - 45 Senators just voted to let Dzhokhar Tsarnaev buy weapons at gun shows w/no inconvenient background checks.

LAST TIME, people: Background checks are not permission, they are rejection.  Put another way: a background check would not stop an immigrant with a state-provided ID, but a law-abiding citizen named John Wilkes Booth would be told to wait 7 days while they look into it further.

There's nothing WRONG with a background check, but it's not magic, either.  It's still not enough to stop a first-time buyer with no criminal record who never reported the side-effects of a recent Cymbalta prescription.

According to the website spotcrime.com, Tamerlan was arrested for domestic violence in July 2009 after assaulting his girlfriend.

I wonder how many people in Boston are sitting in their apartments with nothing to do except watch the cops outside and ponder that exact dilemma?

dletter: DubyaHater: This has been a fun day.

I'd go with the word "interesting".... nothing really "fun" about a million people on virtual lockdown and literally a mad bomber on the loose, even if it isn't directly affecting you.

Someone used the word "loose" properly? It's OVER MAN.

This text is now purple: bkosh84: shiat do they think he's outside of the State by now??

Could be.. But he's nowhere near Ohio, that's for sure.. It's an 8-9 hour drive from Cleveland to Philly so I can't imagine the drive from Boston to Anywhere in Ohio.

You can make the Ohio border from Boston in 9 hours, especially overnight.

This is how Clyde Barrow escaped capture so often. He could drive from Oklahoma to Florida nonstop, and often did.

When I'm going back home by myself (no kids), I can do Cleveland to Greenwich, CT in a little less than 8 hours (I90 to Rt 80 to R287 to I95.)  And going up to Boston (from Greenwich) usually took me a little over 3 hours.  I'd imagine that, if I was being hunted by the FBI and every police officer east of NYC, I'd probably be able to do it faster provided there was no major road construction on Rt 80 in PA.  That said, it's entirely possible he could do it in 9 or so hours.  Plus they could just be plastering that warning on every digital sign between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mississippi River, just to get people to look out for him should he decide to bolt that far west.

Mike Chewbacca: President of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov: "Any attempt to make the connection between Chechnya and Tsarnaevys if they are guilty, [is] in vain. They grew up in the United States, their attitudes and beliefs were formed there. It is necessary to seek the roots of evil in America. From terrorism to fight the whole world. We know better than anyone else. We wish recovery to all the victims and share the feelings of sorrow Americans."

Wow, what a dick!

Kadyov is Putin's appointed bootlicker. I don't think that Americans appreciate what the Russian did in Grozny; turned it into a moonscape and killed hundreds of thousands.
His words ring kind of hollow when bomber No. 1 apparently spent 6 months in Chechnya over the last year, which screams AQ training camp.

biohazard76: WhoopAssWayne: My fact-free speculative theory du jour: What if the older brother, who was an accomplished amateur boxer, was actually suffering from CTE like Junior Seau, Dave Duerson, and others. Seau certainly showed bizarre, uncharacteristically violent behavior before committing suicide. Maybe this whole episode was sparked by traumatic brain injury from boxing. The older brother snaps, co-opts the younger brother, and this is the result.

Had this exact same thought. Doesn't excuse the behavior in the least but wondered if he had CTE...

I'm wondering, before the bombing, what about him would have caused him to fail a background check? The Islamic thing? Immigrant?

From my understanding -I may be wrong- but gun shows don't have background checks like you would have in a store, am I right?.

Federally licensed firearm sellers must perform a background check upon a prospective firearm transferee regardless of where the transfer occurs. This legal requirement is not suspended at gun shows.

Russ1642: So it's 2013 and law enforcement can't figure out how not to have all their communications intercepted by scanners and posted online. I assume that a 19 year old suspect knows how to use the internet.

What I've read on the occasional security blog is: modern police radios are quite capable of good encryption, but it usually goes unused, because if someone screws up a config / a key expires / etc. then they're incommunicado.

soporific: That might be the case. People may not have been in the mood for a show about a serial killer.

Of course, it's also possible that it's not what people were expecting. It's slow, deliberate, and thoughtful, and people might be wanting something more exciting given that it's about Hannibal Lector. Bryan Fuller has a long history of making great shows that people just didn't watch.

It went from 1.6 to 1.7 so clearly the fact that it suddenly dropped to 1.4 after last week's great episode was due to something like that.

I located a direct link. Authentic or not, the image is very graphic; the body shows an injury inconsistent with a bullet wound (in addition to several consistent with a bullet wound).

That may be a thoracotomy "incision", which is weird because I don't know if it's indicated for penetrating AND blunt trauma (it's only indicated for penetrating trauma to the chest with loss of vitals en route or in ED)

It was described earlier in the news as an incision that was made to help revive him or keep him alive - is this what a thoracotomy is?
