TerminalEchoes: VictoryCabal: In this thread: We see who read what Fluke actually said and who let the (right wing) media tell them what she said.

I read much of what she said before Congress. While she did cite certain debilitating female-specific conditions that require birth control to regulate (which I'm all for, for the record), Sanda herself didn't claim to have any such conditions. To me, she was bemoaning the fact that she had to shell out three thousand dollars for her own birth control. That's the only part I have issue with.

So you agree with her, but hate that she voices an opinion w/o having those medical issues because she benefits too?

You are an asshole.

But legal cigarette smoking is now seen as a corporate-sponsored, uncool, and dirty habit that leads to long-term health costs for society at large - in a way homegrown, hip, and mostly illegal pot smoking apparently does not.

I hear also that cigarette smoking is no longer considered "phresh" or "funky", while pot smoking is seen as "da bomb".

You could have just said "Damn, I guess I was completely wrong about Sandra Fluke wanting taxpayer-funded birth control" and left it at that, thereby retaining some small degree of respectability. Instead, you went and said... that.

Tell me - did that post actually make sense in your head when you typed it out?

As opposed to it being covered on prescription like... thousands of other pills or medicines. She wasn't asking for others to pay for it. She wanted it covered on her insurance. That she was paying for.

Never mind that she was primarily making an argument that there was a non-pregnancy usage to the pill which was being blocked.

Kinda failing at the quoting there.  Victory didn't say that.

Apparently, Fark doesn't like work connection at the moment. Had to go back and forth a bit with coping and pasting.

Don't think it's Fark.  Did you install a java or Firefox update today?  Was having the same problem on my work box today.

sammyk: FTFA:"So-called assault weapons account for less than 1 percent of gun deaths in America. "

I am so sick of this farking argument. When an assault style weapon is used to kill people the result is farking horrific. AW's only accounting for %1 of gun deaths does not make it any better when we are talking about classrooms full of dead kids.

6200 people killed by 5300 handguns does not equal 263 people killed by 16 Assault weapons.

Its the difference between MURDER and MASS MURDER you Willfully Ignorant TOOLS!

phritz: I'm still struggling with this paragraph:

A federal judge in New York recently ruled that the so-called morning-after birth-control pill must be made available to all "women" regardless of age or parental consent, and without a prescription. The judge determined that it was unfair for those under 16 to be denied access to such emergency contraceptives. But if vast numbers of girls younger than 16 need after-sex options to prevent unwanted pregnancies, why isn't there a flood of statutory-rape charges being lodged against older teenagers for having consensual relations with younger girls?

As far as I can tell, he believes that sperm only becomes active on a man's 18th birthday, because otherwise this paragraph makes absolutely no farking sense.

He means that every time any girl under sixteen has sex, the boys they have sex with should be charged with statutory rape. This same man goes on to complain how hard the world is for men.

She's a registered Democrat and was a keynote speaker at last year's Democratic National Convention.  Somewhere north of 80% of registered Democrats are in favor of single-payer health insurance.  So, the odds are in favor, if inconclusive.

Yep, cause then pot sales would be dominated by the evil corporations (tobacco companies, likely, since they already have the means to roll out packs of joints almost instantaneously), setting the price low enough to make it a losing business for mom and pop growers.

I know a few hippies still deluded enough to think weed will remain a homegrown industry once it's legalized.

They command the House because 2010 was the teabagger, anti-Obama revolution that put a lot conservative nuts into state office, where they proceeded to gerrymander the shiat out of their districts since it was a census year. They command the Senate because the Democrats refuse to address filibuster reform, and Republicans are the kids in the back of the car laughing and pulling the emergency brake as hard and as often as they can.

I'd really like to see the evidence that shows that Republicans' ideology dominates because of gerrymandering.

No, it's much more f*cked up than that. This country leans center-right, and although Obama has done some wonderful attempts at making a dent in the system, the fact is this country is still solid anti-labor, pro-military strikes, and morally more close to the 1950s than the present day. There is still some really evil greedy shiat driving this country. Albeit into the ground, but driving it no matter who we vote for.

It does seem like Republicans have a built-in structural advantage in getting their way, both in government and in media, no matter how few of them they are, or how unpopular or outlandish their ideas are.  Deep pockets setting up hidden and semihidden ground rules.
