Newschannel 3's Ryan Duffy is on the scene, and has reported that the device was a 'pop bottle bomb.'

Translation: Dry ice in a 2-liter bottle. They make a shiatload of noise, but aren't particularly destructive (unless you don't get away from it fast enough)

We made "works bombs" all the time growing up.  Good times.

Bangor? I barely even know her!

I'm sure CNN will link this to the Boston Marathon bombings and 9/11.

Yup, just don't put 'em in mailboxes. That's frowned upon.

Yep, there's a high schooler or two about to watch their future die a horrible death.

This just in! Somebody inflated a paper bag by breathing into it and then clapped their hand over it making a loud popping noise!

Could be a draino bomb too. Draino and aluminum foil in a 2 liter bottle.

Same boom as the dry ice though.

And if my dumb ass bothered to read the headline a little closer, I'd have noticed the "middle school" part.

I'd hate being a kid now. When I was in school, several centuries ago, bringing cherry-bombs and M80s was pretty much a requirement for the boys.

Good times, good times.

1973: kids laugh, principle fusses, but doesn't even bother trying to track down who did it unless it becomes a habit.

2013: ZOMG NATIONAL BREAKING NEWS

To be fair, events in the last decade or so have made "set off a loud bang at your school" quite a bit more of a dick move than it was back then.

In Indy we had a group of kids using those on mailboxes a couple months ago scaring the boomer neighborhoods. When they caught the dumbasses, the local 60 somethings wanted them tried as terrorists. srsly

Good on em!  Most of today's kids don't have the skill to make explosives at home they have to use the store bought ones.
