Slow To Return: DeltaPunch: I guess, yeah. I'm sure they could be converted to 3D the way the convert movies that weren't originally filmed in 3D. But yeah, I'm talking Lion King style.

I was thinking that if they preserved the original Peanuts-style animation, the movie has a shot at being good. You know, compared to some creepy 3D stuff...

Sadly, Disney just laid off all their hand-drawn animators less than a week ago.

This week sucks

PizzaJedi81: Saborlas: At least now they have no choice but to replace the crappy voice actors.

You mean the non-professional child voice actors from the original shows, or the voice actors from the newer specials?

You know they're gonna get celebrities right? I've got five bucks on Bieber playing Schroeder.

Literally read about this early last fall.  Old news is so exciting.

devilEther: I know a lot of people enjoy 3-D movies and that they simultaneously release 2-D versions of the same movie, but 3-D movies strain my eyes and give me a headache, so they should stop making them altogether.

What happened? You used to like 3D.

/got you faved as "likes 3D/not an idiot"

Oh, you know they will, and they will put the names of the actors in the opening credits just to ruin the experience that much more.

Slow To Return: Also, Lion King and Beauty and the Beast are the only "hand-drawn converted to 3D" movies that come to mind.

Just remembered Finding Nemo.

Finding Nemo was CG animation.

ugh, Roger Ebert is spinning in his grave over this, I'm sure.  He HATED 3-D movies!

Just put it on IFC or Sundance.  Maybe Peppermint Patty and Marcy would make it good enough for Logo.

Peanuts was drawn in the most 2D style possible. Everything is from the side with no indication of perspective.

A doghouse can be drawn like this

Schulz drew it like this

It's so 2D it rejects any illusion of 3D.

buntz: I don't know why you people get so bent out of shape.  You know they made a computer animated Popeye almost 10 years ago, right?  Went straight to video, no one cared, and it hasn't affected your enjoyment of classic Popeye one bit.

Especially given that some of the old 1930s B&W scenes have moving backgrounds that look amazingly like modern CGI. Smoothly shifting perspective and all. Start watching this at 1:40, for instance.

True. It would be like trying to make a 3D version of Larry Marder's Tales of the Beanworld.

The Fleischer camera predates Disney's Multiplane camera. It was a giant pie wedge shaped stage that was rotated incrementally during the filming of the animation. The cell was put close to the camera, and the camera captured the landscape model on the pie wedge.

Cagey B: The Peanuts franchise has been hyper-commercialized since before most people in this thread were born.

I can attest to this. My aunt is a rabid Snoopy merch collector and the amount of Snoopy stamped merch rivals that of the British royalty

Oh wow, I forgot about those. I'd accept a 3D movie that aimed to recreate that look. Schulz presumably approved that.
