About the article, I'm reminded of that bit from A Mote In God's Eye where the Motie engineering is seen as integrated whereas human engineering is based around a one-part, one function philosophy.

It has long been my belief that Earth insects are just extremely sophisticated biomechanical robots designed to care for the planet. They are responsible for our continued existence. I propose they (or their earlier models) were dropped here by the precursors who sought to make this world habitable.

When we figure out how to make more of them and tailor them to other planets, then we   might have a chance at moving on to other worlds. Probably not going to happen, but they'd be the best way for it to occur.
