He's an anti-Obama meanie? HANG HIM FOR THE HERESY!  We liberals were never vicious about Bush!11!

Adverbs are hard.

Seriously, Card's political website is so full of derp it makes the American Thinker look like a bastion of sanity.

Slaves2Darkness: Not to mention that the whole Ender's Game series of books is just one great big Morman masturbatory fantasy.

It has been a long time since I read 'Speaker for the Dead' or the third book so I cannot comment on them. But how is Ender's Game Morman? I had to stop reading his books because his religious crap got too intense but I didn't see it there.

He has one series where the inhabitants of a planet are not very advanced but are very religious (hmmm). It turns out their god exists but is actually a machine ... it is an AI on a satellite which has control systems for many things on the planet. It has, in fact, been playing god for generations (manipulating gene lines, weather, etc.).

This god satellite has been around a long time and is starting to malfunction so it decides to enlist the help of some of the residents of the planet for repairs. I don't know how the book ends because I had to stop reading it when the lead characters discovered the true nature of their 'god' (i.e. that it is just a computer built by their ancestors) and they consciously decided to continue to worship it anyway. This intense stupidity of the lead characters turned me completely off the book and the author.

While I thought Enders Game was trash I am going to go see this movie just so OSC can keep up the good fight.

LowbrowDeluxe: Farking Canuck:

Comparing his support of political hate groups to actual torture and violence is still hyperbole.

Alright, I'll bite.  How so?   Use small words, I'm clearly failing to grasp how you feel there is an essential difference beyond which one is getting away with inflicting their lunacy on others.  Is there some acceptable threshold for hurting others I'm unaware of?

Yes. The actual physical hurting. Harsh words vs. physical violence ... both are bad but there is a difference.

Simple concept. (concept means idea)

I am fully in support of equal rights which implicitly means I support gay marriage. I fully agree that people who try to stop others from being happy are dicks. But freedom of speech means these dicks are allowed to spew their hate.

Ender's Game won both the Hugo Award and Nebula Award. Only 20 novels in history have ever accomplished this (its sequel is one of the other 19).

You are welcome to your opinion but I will not be taking book recommendations from you.

The "Homecoming" series is based on the LDS books, not Ender's Game. Please ensure you use your totally-not-hate-speech on the approved target.

He is free to say what he wants; I don't think anyone  is saying he isn't. People are saying they don't want to give him money to lobby against things they believe in. That makes perfect sense. Most people don't willingly give candidates they disagree with money why would you give a PAC you disagree with money?

Dhusk: Orson Scott Card is a vile homophobe.

Do not spend any money on this movie or any of his books.

Do not give a single dime or one iota of additional prestige to such an unmitigated bigot.

There is quite a difference between a phobia and a dislike or disapproval. I wish people that use the "phobia" word would study the etymology of the word and stop using it. I dislike Honda's, would never buy one and don't respect those that drive them but they certainly don't scare me. By definition I'm not a "Hondaphobe".

And on a similar tangent, people that are famous in film, media and print (fiction) are telling a story. Does that make their political opinions more valid? They can spin a yarn or play a character, who gives a shiat who they vote for? That goes for both sides.

/will see Ender's Game, opening weekend.

Dhusk speaks truth. I wasn't aware of this before kindling this book, so my apologies there.

Lots of great artists are douche bags.  If you are going to be consistent with your outrage you really need to take a look at your library of books, music, art, etc.. and start burning sh*t.

There's douchebags, and then there's Card advocating treason and armed insurrection against the US government to stop the legalization of gay marriage.  That's beyond some guy being egotistical and saying occasional stupid things a la Frank Miller or Dan Simmons.

Or John Byrne, or Tom Clancy, or any of the other soulless writers and cartoonists out there whose tastes lean toward homophobia, misogyny, racism and the like.  Screw those idiots.

That was the last thing of Card's I ever read. And it actually wasn't the right-wing masturbatory fantasy that bothered me, so much as the fact that it read like it was written by a 12-year-old and then published with no editing.

Card is a douchebag of the highest order, and he wrote this series into the ground in the worst way, but Ender's Game is art - and a damn good yarn.

I'll see the movie if it is determined to be a good adaptation regardless.

How did you not see that coming? A book where revolution happens in the US: there is no way to go except full retard.

I really, really, really want somebody to take the central concepts of Pastwatch and give them to a capable, skilled, non-right-wing-lunatic author.

There are some awesome story ideas in there, but they're wasted in the hands of somebody determined to describe a global Christian government as the pinnacle of alternate history.

I've recently been reading a bunch of science fiction and fantasy books.  Some, like Mark Lawrence's Prince of Thorns have been hilarious (and good).  Ender's Game is definitely one of the best.  I highly recommend it and I'm excited for the movie.

Plus if anyone wants to read something fun that borrows heavily from Ender's game... http://hpmor.com/chapter/1

Speaker for the Dead was a better book than Ender's Game, pound for pound,

I certainly liked it and felt it was also worthy of the Hugo and Nebula. But Ender's game is still the winner for me.

Card is a minor player in a huge game. Check out Wagner, T.S. Eliot, Degas, Byron, Nabokov, Hemingway and Dickens (to name a few) if you want to get into anti-semitism, misogyny, racism, pedophilia and sexual abuse (to name a few).

If you're going to bring up Eliot, it only seems fair to mention Pound. Yes, all of those 1970s undergraduates rhapsodizing over (and buying) the Cantos were giving their money to a guy who broadcast on Axis radio and came close to being shot for treason. (I liked George Orwell's take on that question, which was basically "I hope Pound doesn't get shot, because if he does it will be impossible to objectively judge his poetry for about 200 years.") It's a fact that good writers and artists have can sometimes be crazy assholes, just like everyone else. If their work is good enough, it will transcend that fact -- a really good work is always better than its author anyway.

This. You can always donate an equal sum to a same-sex marriage cause to negate the money going to Card. Also he is rich already, so if you're not into futile gestures...

Anyway I hope it is good, I enjoyed the Ender series despite Card's apparent dickishness.

No one is saying that Card can't say what he wants, or should be in jail, or can't write books.

The issue here is that some people do not want to buy his products because he puts that money towards anti-gay things like Prop 8 and NOM.

Dude is nucking futs. He's written several anti-gay diatribes calling for the overthrow of America if gay marriage gets legalized.

Rubber Biscuit: John Byrne

John Byrne created Northstar, one of comic book's gay icons, as well as Maggie Sawyer (a lesbian cop) in his Superman run. Unless you're referring to some other John Bryne, you're sadly mistaken.
