I have high hopes for this.

Minor spoiler WARNING:

The author seems to think that the battle room is to physically train the students to be warriors. He says "the child warriors train for zero-G battle".

This guy seems to have missed that the whole point of the battle room is that it is a strategy training tool. This is why Ender excelled there - he understood this. Let's face it, neither Ender or Bean are ever going to be 'zero-G warriors'.

I think Petra is played by the girl from the True Grit remake.

/shouldn't you know Petra, after all?

Do not spend any money on this movie or any of his books.

Do not give a single dime or one iota of additional prestige to such an unmitigated bigot.

I liked the book.  Found out later that it was written by an asshole, but doesn't change the fact that I liked it.

Wonder if they'll show the Formics?  They're not really in the book, but I doubt Hollywood could resist showing the face of the enemy.  I always imagined them looking something like the Shadows in B5.

There's douchebags, and then there's Card advocating treason and armed insurrection against the US government to stop the legalization of gay marriage.  That's beyond some guy being egotistical and saying occasional stupid things a la Frank Miller or Dan Simmons.

This.

Why would I care what a guy that writes about alien bugs thinks about same sex marriage?

My disdain for scientology doesn't stop me from enjoying Top Gun or Mission Impossible.

The fact that I enjoyed the Terminator series doesn't mean I agree with Arnold's political career.

Yes, metallica is a band comprised of some of the biggest douches in the world. Enter Sandman is still a great song.

Separate your opinions of the individual from their work and you'll find a lot more in life that you can enjoy.

Card is a minor player in a huge game. Check out Wagner, T.S. Eliot, Degas, Byron, Nabokov, Hemingway and Dickens (to name a few) if you want to get into anti-semitism, misogyny, racism, pedophilia and sexual abuse (to name a few).

Not sure. They did age the kids - I'd guess they are about 4 years older in the movie than in the books. I think this was done to make the violence a little more ... palatable. Add this to the fact that there are only a couple of scenes of violence and that the board tends to be pretty lenient on it, I suspect it will get away with a PG.

Have to assume that this is targeted for a wide audience so they will do whatever they can to get the lighter rating.

I would think you'd use older actors because where the hell are you going to find that many "good" actors who are under age 10?  You'd have to go with teenagers unless you want the movie to be a complete suck-fest.

That said, I never really bought that part of Ender's game---I always pictured Battle School as being more for late middle school/early high school, with Command School being for late HS/early college aged kids.  Trust me, 5 year-olds are not nearly as smart as Card makes them out to be.

Keep in mind that these would be the top 0.0001% of humanity.

And yes, making the kids older does simplify getting quality actors but the idea behind training the kids so young is to get them before they start thinking like the rest of humanity. So they can come up with the ideas that nobody else will.

You can take a stand on principle if you like. I doubt that you are going to impact the bottom line of the movie though. And if you have no impact are you really accomplishing anything with your protest.

On the flip side, a lot of non-hateful people have poured their blood, sweat and tears to make a product. If it is a good product is it really fair to punish them because one person in the chain is a dick?

I read a fair bit of Card when I was younger. The Ender books were good and I liked the Seventh Son stuff. The rest seemed to get all wrapped up in his Mormon crap and I couldn't stomach it.

[True story Bro]

Orson Scott Card was the guest author/lecturer at Lenoir Rhyne Univeristy back in early 2005. My dad and I went to hear him. At the last minute, Card decided to charge 20 bucks per person for admission (something that no other guest speaker had ever done). He was 45 minutes late getting to the stage, and then he spent most of his time railing on about "The Dreadful Gay Choice."

After about 30 minutes into his tirade, some of the audience began to leave. Card taunted them, saying that they were Pink Americans and homosexual enablers.

The line for the booksigning was embarassingly short. I left with my copy of Ender's Game unsigned. It wasn't his agenda that made me leave; it was the fact that he was as crazy as a shiat-house rat.

Because by buying his books, seeing the movie, or doing anything else that gives him money you are helping him give money to those groups. I wouldn't buy things from a store that proudly gives part of their profits to the klan and I won't buy a book from an author who gives him money to oppress homosexuals.

He's very pro-welfare state and anti-business, so he's liberal economically and conservative socially, which makes him the exact opposite of me. Somehow I manage to like some of his books.

The Seventh Son series and the Homecoming Series really sucked. Homecoming features a Gay Character who is fundamentally good, but that isn't why it sucked.

It's not just a matter of "doesn't share political views." Orson Scott Card gives money and resources to anti-gay organizations, serves on the board of NOM, and is a loud and vocal bigot. On top of that, he's a climate change denier and viciously anti-Obama.
