GoldSpider: aspAddict: Are you assuming they went to a local sporting store and bought them?

Obviously they went to a gun show and exploited the "gun show loophole".

I'm going to enjoy reading Fark today and reading the mea culpas from people who "knew" this was a "second amendment solution."

/the above was not a factual statement.

What about the pressure cookers and ball bearings? Do we need background checks to buy those too?

Watertown in lockdown.  How comforting it must be as a Watertown resident, where a class A firearm permit is near impossible to obtain, knowing that you're hunkered down and armed with nothing north of some charming butter knives while a psycho armed terrorist is running around.

DamnYankees: Cybernetic: DamnYankees: This kid must be scared beyond his mind right now. Not that we need to feel bad for him, but just from a sociological point of view, imagine how farked he must feel.

People like him are not only willing to die for their cause, but actually WANT to die for their cause. They don't seem to fear death the way that a normal, rational person would.

We have no idea what this guy is like or what his cause it. You're making shiat up to fit a pre-determined narrative.

I am making a reasonable assumption based on the history of people who set off bombs that target civilians, and based on the fact that they didn't effect any kind of escape despite having several days to do so. There's no sense hanging around the area unless you want to get caught, or want to cause more carnage. Shooting it out with the cops puts the kibosh on the "want to get caught" option, so it's pretty much down to the "want to go out in a blaze of glory and die for their cause" option.

And yes, I could be wrong. But I guess we'll find out as the day progresses.

Starryeyes: Close2TheEdge: Lockdown extended to entire city of Boston.  Guess I am staying home today.

Ayup.

Right now millions of Bostonians are emailing their HR rep with same question, "Do I still get paid for today?"

FarkinNortherner: While the death and injury toll has been terrible, incompetent terrorists really are my favourite sort.

Tomahawk513: Chechens were the primary foreign fights in Iraq and Afghanistan.

There's very little evidence to support that assertion.

Dude... what?  What's with the blatant misquote?

2013-04-19 08:15:18 AM

Igor Jakovsky: I understand one of the suspects is dead from multiple gun shot wounds and the other is still running around out there. I do hope they catch the other one alive so maybe we can find out why they did it. Chechens? Really? Seems kind of pointless to have a bombing and not even a manifesto being issued or anything. Listening to wbz on tunein and they said the whole city is under a shelter order.

Tamerlan also had a bomb strapped to his chest. It seems it went off, so yes he was shot a lot, but I'm pretty sure the bomb would have done the trick by itself.

Is the emergency broadcast in use in Boston? Like for people who wake up and don't know the city is in lockdown and get in their car? If it doesn't get used for today, would it ever?

DamnYankees: This kid must be scared beyond his mind right now. Not that we need to feel bad for him, but just from a sociological point of view, imagine how farked he must feel.

He could be scared.  Or he could be completely numb.  Sane people do not blow up crowds of innocent bystanders and it is impossible to guess the emotional status of the insane.

I'd say the smartest play this asshole has left is to kill himself in a way or place that makes it impossible to find and identify his body.  This would keep law enforcement, both state and federal, on a heightened state of alert for an untold amount of time.  Not to mention the cost of the manhunt and the revenue lost from people hiding in their houses.

It's worth mentioning that this bombing makes no sense in terms of Chyechnian independence. How the fark does that cause improve due to this?

Any motive right now is 100% guessing.

2013-04-19 08:16:07 AM

mitEj: fredklein:

So, now we're supposed to trust police that this time they have the right guys?

All the throwing of explosives by the suspects is pretty damning.

The fact that those people were driving 'the same' truck as Dorner was pretty damning, too. What's your point?

And, where are we getting the fact that they were throwing explosives? The police.

2013-04-19 08:16:08 AM

dukeblue219: As has already been mentioned by others, plenty of Chechens fought Americans in Iraq. They've grown up around terror and it's not that hard to believe they'd have a grievance with the Great Satan. Don't get wrapped up into the big picture ("Why would Chechens attack America") when it can easily be an individual issue ("The Americans killed my brother and two cousins in Iraq").

Which would be an odd motivation to bomb an event in which such a high proportion of non-Americans participate.

This is the worst possible scenario in my mind. Muslim Chechen Rebels make Al Qaeda look like Sparkle Ponies. They target children often and are armed with real modern black market weapons. They suck, but I thought we were kind-of-sort-of with them in their hatred of Assad?

When they make up the bad guys in movies, they use the Chechens as a model..

ACTUAL Chechen Rebel, not a movie character:

modesto: natas6.0: Some overpaid, government lackey let them into the country and never paid any attention past that.
Could we hold them at least partially responsible?
The douchebag running now has a scholarship.
That horrible system needs to be fixed asap

We're terrible at this, but it runs both ways. I work in refugee resettlement and in the last year we've had one 80 year old Iraqi woman inadmissible because she was forced to join the Ba'ath Party when she was a high school teacher in the 70s. Another Somali girl rejected because she was kidnapped by Al Shabab and "supported" them by carrying supplies when she was 14 rather than get raped and shot. Our bureaucracy is infuriatingly inept at determining who and who is not a threat. This will only make it worse for those who are not and who see America as their only hope for a peaceful life after years of horrible suffering.

The younger guy was let in at 9 years old. I'm not sure what background check you guys imagine would have caught his terrorist proclivities.

Bendal: You'd think that Chechnyans would have plenty of targets over in their home country and Russia instead of coming over here to blow people up.

It's entirely possible that, if these are the bombers, they did it for reasons completely unconnected with their religion (whatever it is) or their place of birth (whatever it is).
