Wow... Good on him, looks like the video evidence is piling up against "suspect 2" as well. What a P.O.S.

I would, however, like to believe that if I noticed someone throw a bag down at my feet in a public place and walk away I would at least move to a new spot if not notify some sort of authority....

/also a 2 1/2 min timer... if only that nitwit got stuck holding onto that bag a bit longer...

When they catch these guys, they better hope it's the cops who catch them, and that some random citizen doesn't ID them first...because the cops will only beat them half to death. A vigilante squad will go 110% of the way.

Karma, dude.

You blow off someone's legs, they see to it that you end up being locked away for life or executed.

Seems fair to me.

Yeah, if I saw something like that, I'd at least say "hey, you dropped your bag" and when I saw the guy running for it, start clearing everything and everyone out while (possibly) trying to throw the bag at the coward.

Rule of thumb: pay attention to abandoned items and randomly dropped packages.

I take it you've never been to a race. Why would anyone be paying much attention to other spectators instead of watching and cheering for the ridiculously fast runners crossing the finish line?

Moreover, discarded clothing and other items are pretty common at races (or at least all big-ish ones I've been to). Granted, a backpack is a bit unusual for someone to just leave at a race, but not so noteworthy that it should or likely would set off anyone's alarm bells. It wouldn't've set off mine, at least. Certainly not enough to be like "Holy crap, I think that's a bomb--I need to get out of here ASAP!"

/just isn't something that typically happens in the US
//Pakistan, India, and Iraq all had seriously FUBAR bombings this week, too
///doubting I would have noticed anything strange about their bombers, either

I'm very stout mentally. When I saw the pics of the guy I was angry and horrified, but I've seen pictures similar from war and such.

However, when I saw that's how his family found out what happened, by seeing the pics online, I wanted to cry. I can barely imagine finding out my loved one was horrifically injured, by seeing the gruesome pics online, especially when the injuries were that graphic and extensive, not to mention he looked about dead. I'd be traumatized forever. I also don't think I could keep myself from trying to hunt down and kill the attackers myself. Not trying to be ITG, just imagining what that kind of thing would do to my mind, and I don't think I'd be rational. I don't think I'm alone there.

Same here.  I've seen awful photos before, mostly from wars, but I know that most people have not, and as shocking as Photo #8 was for me, it's 100x worse for someone who wasn't as previously desensitized, and 100^100x worse for someone who knew this man.

My uncle committed suicide 3 weeks ago. My aunt and cousin drove from to tell my other cousin (who was in class at a university 3 hours away) that his dad was dead. I manned my uncle's FB page for the duration of the drive (from a different state) so my cousin wouldn't find out about his dad from FB. I had to message 6 different stupid assholes to not post on his wall, because not everyone in the family knew. Seriously, who the hell posts on FB an hour after someone commits suicide? Farking morons.

I can't imagine what it would be like to be Jeff's dad and see picture #8 on the internet, and have that be the way you find out your son is fighting for his life. Ugh.

The whole dropped bag thing from the article is a sign of the times.

People will ignore suspicious stuff even if you tell them to be on the lookout. This is due to one fact I have learned doing security.

They do not care. They actively focus on the moment at hand instead of things around them. It takes something to shock them into paying attention, an "Awakening".

Mine was getting robbed. I am way more observant and I considered myself pretty observant before. It is just now I have a reason to be on the lookout even more now. My brother is the same way now. After he got robbed a few years ago he picks up on a lot of things.

Just two weeks ago he noticed a guy following a woman way too closely as we were walking to the grocery store to do shopping. We completed our shopping, came out, and the SAME guy was again walking on the same side of the sidewalk following the woman at a distance. Both had come out of a local store carrying bags. Neither seemed to know one another, my brother pointed him out to me and I was like "Yea it is the same guy and he is following her."

I made a decision right then and there and told my brother, "If it comes down to it and he does not walk off a side street or she does not enter a house soon. I will follow him and report anything he does. Or if I have to maybe step in and possibly die."

My brother understands my stupidity as I call it. I do not believe in heroes, but I believe in people or persons giving a damn when you can do something. To break the cycle of "Not caring" or "Not my job" that is so damn pervasive in the world around me.

My bro said lets just keep walking along and hope she gets to her house before we get to ours.

Thankfully she entered a house and the guy kept walking. What confirmed he had been following her, besides his behavior, was when he crossed to our side of the street to keep walking. Something he could have did way before, like two blocks back, and just freaked me and my brother out even more for being right.

There is checking a woman out, and there is stalking. He was stalking and my brother totally zeroed in on it. I guess sometimes you need trauma to actually change how you act.

I bet you after this event a lot of people are going to be suspicious of dropped items. Except until they start not to care and then the cycle repeats. Lessons do not want to stick sometimes, even horrible ones.

/Tired of history repeating
//Never tired of seeing others helping others
///Lot of awesome people at the Marathon on Monday proving that

Captain Dan: Ihaveanevilparrot: I'm very stout mentally. When I saw the pics of the guy I was angry and horrified, but I've seen pictures similar from war and such.

However, when I saw that's how his family found out what happened, by seeing the pics online, I wanted to cry...

Same here.  I've seen awful photos before, mostly from wars, but I know that most people have not, and as shocking as Photo #8 was for me, it's 100x worse for someone who wasn't as previously desensitized, and 100^100x worse for someone who knew this man.

I'm an anesthesia resident in a trauma center and I have never seen anything remotely as bad as that picture, fortunately. We do have conferences on trauma and rescucitation where battlefield surgeons and anesthesiologists come talk to us about how they handle these types of injuries, and those pictures are very similar to the Boston pics. Again though, never in real life.

I was shocked to learn that in afghanistan, forward medical units actually have the ultrasound equipment and supplies to put in nerve blocks in order to numb up involved nerves and decrease the chances of phantom limb pain or other chronic pain problems later on (as well as getting pain control immediately without the need for medications that could lower BP and respiration).

I looked at the photos and I'm absolutely shocked that a lot of those people didn't die. Sounds like there were two or three people on the scene FAST applying tourniquets, including cowboy hat dude and an ER doc that were among the crowd. I hope I never find myself in a situation like that, but if I do, I hope I do as good a job as they seem to have done, especially considering they had no way of knowing another bomb wasn't going to go off and take them out as well. Farking bravo, sirs.

Oh gods damn it so much.

I just stumbled into a forum of nose-picking slobs and f*ckwits who think this is a psyop.

I'm gonna go beat my head on the wall.

/c'mere, wall, don'tcha be a pussy now and run away from me!!

Bluevirage: People will ignore suspicious stuff even if you tell them to be on the lookout. This is due to one fact I have learned doing security.

They do not care. They actively focus on the moment at hand instead of things around them. It takes something to shock them into paying attention, an "Awakening".

It's not that they don't care. It's that normal people don't go around paranoid that someone's trying to kill them all the time. Not every bag that's dropped or left somewhere contains a bomb. Joe Average Citizen doesn't see the world as one big terrorist target. Your "doing security" has given you a very narrow perception of things.

Of course there's no blood trail you acephalic idiots, he's GOT A TOURNIQUET ON!!!

how long until mr. bauman is sued for not warning the police about the dude dropping the bag?  i'm sure it'll happen.

2013-04-19 01:59:19 AM
Paint? The blood on the sidewalk is paint because it's too bright a red!?

I....I give up.

Sorry.

Hero tag ... well, is damn appropriate for this one.  Carry on.

Polyhazard: Is it wrong that I am wildly curious about how the Twinkie fits into this scenario?

It's so he can get a quick energy boost when long hours of torturing scum wears him down.

It's funny. As an MS3, I've seen some interesting trauma (the worst being the man who tried to commit suicide with a handgun point up through the jaw... and watching the oral and maxillofacial surgeon poking a tongue depressor through the subsequent hole), but the injury in that photo is definitely worse... but also just doesn't register as something that's real to me on anything past an intellectual level.

banandar123: So will this make Alex Jones finally stfu about this? Because I'm all for that.

Nothing can make Alex Jones shut up.  His stupidity knows no bounds, no limits, and no restrictions.  He is, honestly, giving Jim Hoft a run for the title of "Dumbest Man on the Internet".

It looks like there are a lot of people heavily invested in pinning this on some darkies, to the point that they even intentionally ignore real evidence.

Guy drops a backpack at your feet and you're still standing there 2 and a half minutes later? WTF? On what planet is that not suspicions as hell? Jesus, 20 times a day you see "breaking news, backpack spotted on a sidewalk, bomb squad called in".

I sure as hell would have caused a huge ruckus.

I hope they can get both of the perpetrators alive.
Their brains have to be examined with Positon emission tomography.
See what parts of the brain light up when shown the injuries they've caused.

In the future, this examination will only need a fancy hat.
Maybe it can talk like the on in the Harry Potter movies.

"Hmmmm. This is odd......  Something wrong here.... Arkham."

I have been to many races, both as a participant and a spectator. We drop bags all over the place. Sometimes they contain a change of clothes. Sometimes they are used as placeholders while we go get a drink. (If I have a good viewing location, I might leave a bag behind so people know I have a legitimate reason to come back.) Of course, that may change now.

So I don't think it's all that suspicious to see someone leave a backpack on the ground. In hindsight? Sure. But in the moment? Not so much.

2013-04-19 04:34:38 AM
and we know Bauman wasn't the bomber himself because why?  someone drops a backpack at your feet and runs away and you stare at it for two and a half minutes without doing anything about it?

for all you people know, George Zimmerman did it.

2013-04-19 04:56:14 AM

Fark Me To Tears: So you're saying they need evidence to back this guy's story. Otherwise, it won't stand up in court? You're saying that they don't have a leg to stand on?

Heh.  You're bad.

Having his legs blown off would be my first clue he didn't do it.

Or maybe that's just what he wants me to think! Clever man!

who the fark is Alex Jones?  I honestly have no idea, other than hearing the name for a few months now.

/I guess sometimes ignorance IS bliss.

strangeluck: Gyrfalcon: When they catch these guys, they better hope it's the cops who catch them, and that some random citizen doesn't ID them first...because the cops will only beat them half to death. A vigilante squad will go 110% of the way.

If I caught them, I'd keep'em locked in a room, tied to chairs, and slowly remove their skin using only a potato peeler and a Twinkie.

He would eat the Twinkie in front of them and not offer them any of it.  Now that would be REAL torture....if you like Twinkies,  which I don't.

rocinante721: I hope this guy pulls in more p*ssy than an '80s hair-metal band after this.

Then him & Cowboy Hat Man will travel the earth, find adventure, & right all the wrongs

So. Much. THIS!!!

My guess is with all the people holding onto clothes for the runners to put on when they finish, etc... he could have said "hey would you watch my pack while I run to get water for my brother when he finishes" or something like that.....   THat's probably why it stuck in the victim's mind....

gadian: As much as I want the bad guy's nailed, this eye witness stuff will go absolutely nowhere if the accused has a decent attorney. Eye witness testimony sucks in the most ideal circumstances.  Now add explosions, loss of limbs, consciousness, and blood and add in drugs and coma.

You realize there is / going to be other evidence, right.

2013-04-19 11:22:01 AM
Damn.

I know this is kinda old news now (I woke up this morning and all kinds of shiat had gone down that I had no idea about), but seriously, this dude is all kinds of impressive. As well as the people who helped save him.

If it comes to a trial, I can't imagine this won't be convincing to any jury. I kinda hope there's not a trial, though. Hopefully the guy (or guys, if there are more of them) responsible could be convinced to just plead and spend the rest of their days in federal prison.

GreenSun: Without both legs, I wonder how long his girlfriend would remain to be with him. Situations like this can really make you think just how important you are to people close to you. If you lost a few important body parts, will they still stick with you or move on?

He was amputated from the knee done, he'll get prostetics and hopefully with physical therapy walk again.

It's not the end of the world, I'd still stay with my husband if he lost his legs.

so "failed suicide bomber" and "bomb goes off prematurely" can only happen to other people?
