On reason they might wait to break it is they are looking to confirm it is unrelated to the bombings. They would want to know that before posting the breaking story because it changes how they will frame things. Not saying they shouldn't break it now, just think taht might be part of it.

Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of the end of the Waco Siege and the 18th of OKC.

Sleep Well.

NewportBarGuy: RodneyToady: you're smart enough not to hang around for a few days within a couple of miles of the scene of the crime.

And have the economic means to do so.

If they're smart enough to plan this type of attack, they should have the foresight to not execute it unless they have enough money to get out of dodge.

What a farking week. What'll tomorrow bring? Earthquake? Plane Crash? Tsunami? Attack of the Clones 3D?

I have only one beer left. :(

Glad I have no need to go into the city much, anymore.

A friend is an MIT prof, but he's thankfully leaving on a trip tomorrow.

I've been concerned about that too as this week has gone on. I think I'll booby trap the front door in the morning.

Awfully convenient timing, I would say. I'm going to call the FBI.

Is violent crime normally low near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus, or is this incident newsworthy primarily due to its juxtaposition with recent events?

Funny, this map says a different story...
and I didn't accuse anyone of anything, all I said was "I hope this is related..." I didn't say, "This is totes the guy who farked everyone up..."

Someone commenting on the Boston.Com story on it said that "Channel 5" has reported that.  But it's been a while since I lived up there to know what station that is.

I think people are saying that because most of these types of shooters are caught or killed and that would get one of the two off the streets. Problem is most end in death and I believe the preference is for the bomber to get caught alive to rat out the other.

CNN says officer has died:

A campus police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was shot and killed on campus Thursday night, Massachusetts State Police Lt. Mark Kiley told CNN.

Gunshots were reported on the MIT campus, according to an alert on MIT's website, and the "situation is considered active and extremely dangerous."

No problem. I could see earlier the intent of the posts but I can definitely understand reading that in a negative light since when you read it like that it sounds like you are positive about the overall situation. Just figured I'd type it out since everyone is truly on the same page and hoping that
A) this turns out for the best tonight (i.e. catch him/her before any more harm)
B) we get the bombers soon

TuteTibiImperes: somedude210: huh, I never realized that MIT (as well as most colleges in MA) have their own police force with regular police training. I always thought they were state-ies

It's pretty common with most medium to larger schools.  When you have 15K - 30K+ students, professors, support staff, etc, a school basically becomes its own small city.

In NY, SUNY police hold the equivalent rank & powers of state troopers (so do state park police). Don't know how it works in other states, but that discovery was a bit sobering.

It probably makes a difference that MIT is not a state school, unlike, say, Stony Brook.
