well you'd need some decent engineering knowhow to pull that off (news report earlier said that the circuit board was rewired from an RC car circuit board)

I think that was what the speculation was related to.

huh, I never realized that MIT (as well as most colleges in MA) have their own police force with regular police training. I always thought they were state-ies

also, he was shot and his weapon stolen

It's pretty common with most medium to larger schools.  When you have 15K - 30K+ students, professors, support staff, etc, a school basically becomes its own small city.

That's why my headline went

I've built better bombs with CO2 cartridges, black powder, and cannon fuse.

MIT? Come on. If they got in there, they are way more sophisticated than this.

well there are reports that he stole the down officer's gun, but right now, I'm just curious if this is related to the bombings.

suicide by cop seems like the biatch way to go

Update from TPM:

Late Update - 11:23 PM: Just so we're clear: there is no evidence that this is related to the bombings. But new updates suggest this is not a few random shots but a serious on-going situation that police are responding to in force. More updates to follow.

To be fair, they do court the other sciences. I'm just very doubtful they are students. And, crime does happen. Could they have caught them trying to hit the campus, maybe. I'll just go with crazy guy doing crazy things. Like every other day ending in y.

I'd have to imagine that if you're smart enough to go to MIT, you're smart enough not to hang around for a few days within a couple of miles of the scene of the crime.

Update on shooter incident. Responding agencies continue to investigate the situation. The scene is outside of Building 32 (Stata) and 76 (Koch) near Vassar and Main Streets. Injuries have been reported. The situation is still very active and we ask everyone to stay inside.

You know, for all the insanity we've seen this past week, all the heartache and chaos and sheer "what the fark is going on with this world" moments, you have to remember that there is also a great deal of insanity of the good going on too. In a week of sadness, we've also seen a week of triumph, a week of compassion, a week of people going out of their way, risking their own lives just to make sure that total stranger has a better shot at life.

For all the insanity we're facing this week, for all the misery and chaos; we need to remember all the good that has come from that. If that is all the "April showers" that we've witnessed this week, then all the good: the giving, the outreach, the common bonds as humans that we've shared, those are the "May flowers" that have sprung forth, and in far greater abundance.

Shooting at a college barely a swallow's flight away from a bombing that killed 3 and injured over 150, and just three days after said bombing. Why WOULDN'T the FBI be there?

Point taken, but if the crazy guy doing crazy things is an MIT student, chances are he is a bit more tech-savvy than your average AOL user.

More likely than you might think.  People there are smart, but a lot of them, especially undergrads, are living on another planet so to speak.  Really really stupid shiat can seem to make sense to people sometimes, and it would fit in with no obvious motive to the bombings that any normal person would understand.

Remember, right after the bombings, when the media was cranking out all sorts of bullshiat, one of the threads claimed a big police presence at MIT; easy to speculate they had info and were searching then.

Yes. They have distinguished anthropology and linguistics programs, women's studies, history, philosophy, etc. that don't require advanced tech knowledge.

Either this one, or the one I started.  either way, one of them needs to go.

Also, still no word from main media sites.  Are they waiting for CNN to go first??

I've been busy at work but read up enough to feel briefed. When someone said "pressure cooker bomb" I had to honestly ask, WTF? My first question was "How was it detonated?" Someone said a cell phone, but that made no sense to me. If you are so unsophisticated you are using a pressure cooker... Then I heard it was a timer. The Iraqis liked to use dishwasher timers in some of their IEDs. All of that stuff is common knowledge, low tech stuff. Easy to access.

Sounds like Anarchist's Cookbook sh*t. Nothing like a well-planned attack. Plus, any terror group would have set it off as the first person came across the finish line... Not wait an hour until people got bored and left. They would want it live. So would anyone who got into MIT.

You also don't know exactly what is going on too. At VT during the shootings, we were trying to hear one of the announcements so we opened up and leaned out the window to hear the PA...which was a "warning for the close buildings to avoid windows and lock themselves further inside". Even post shooting, sometimes the info was vague (during the beheading) that people couldn't tell what to do to stay safe (if you didn't get the right website or link about the event).
