The women's rights movement was started because women were losers.

There was also a lot of paranoia on the side of men's rights activists, as many of them walked around with video cameras-presumably in part to defend themselves in a court of law.

Why am I totally not surprised that the sort of dudes who'd join a 'men's rights' organization are a complete bunch of pussies

But hey, you gotta give it to us white males... after mocking the very concept of equality throughout the entirety of our rule of civilization, we sure did become the most stalwart zealots of its enforcement... once it seemed that inequality might put us at the disadvantage.

/So Guy A is standing with his boot on the neck of Guy B, pushing Guy B's face down into the mud. After fearsome struggle, Guy B knocks Guy A on his ass. If you bothered reading the article, you'd see that the opposition isn't pulling any punches in terms of sophomoric bullshiat. I wouldn't be surprised if someone proved them right and filed a couple of false rape claims. The men's rights activists are stupid for a great many reasons, but videotaping the event isn't one of them.

I think the way the law handles children, child support, and parental rights are grossly outdated.

That's about as far as my concurrence with MRAs and the MRM goes.

/ I also have issues with the rising sociopathic take that modern teens and young women have on rape allegations, but that's got more to do with women's rights than men's as they're hurting women more than men, and that's another thread all together.

The webzine Vice has long had a hard on for people supportive of men's rights. Up at the University of Toronto, since November, there have been three lectures given about men's issues. All were given by Ph.Ds or University Professors. Two were women. Two were men.

The response to these lectures have been feminist protesters physically blockading the lectures, spitting in faces, pulling fire alarms, and claiming to be victims. The feminists have also demanded websites be shutdown and accused the various mens rights supporters of hate crimes.

It's pretty clear to anyone that has any passing interest in finding out what actually happened is that the mens rights supporters have generally acted honorably and tried to discuss their issues in a lecture format and been given the heckler's veto and much much worse by the feminists.

As the subby, I'm a bit saddened this was greened. Many more headlines were redlit, but sadly, it tells me a bit about the state of political correctness even at FARK. But hey, at least this got posted, for the first time since November.

One of the claims of the feminists at U of T, but also a common refrain of many feminists is that mens issues are best supported, best solved, best addressed by supporting feminism. That feminism, the fight against the Patriarchy is the best way to solve mens issues which feminists care deeply about. And hence, mens issues supporters should stand down.

So tell me, what other civil rights groups work this way? Where the group claiming oppression of any kind is told by the group claimed to be the oppressive group to stand down?

Palestinians, you don't get to choose your leaders. Israel will choose the leaders in your struggle.
ANC stand down, you don't get to choose your leaders. The leaders of Apartheid will choose your leaders and will fight for your rights. Native Americans stand down. Disabled Americans stand down. Gay America, stand down, the Church will choose your leaders.

Men, stand down. Feminists are the people that will fight for your rights. Feminists that tell you misandry aint real. Feminists that tell you being a man is the easy setting. Feminists that want you to understand why it must be called Feminism and not egalitarianism. Feminists are the people that will fight for your causes. Misandry aint real men. Stand down. Feminists will pick your leaders for you.

You know, there's these feminists holding meetings, men's rights guys holding meetings, animal rights people, commies, anarchists, libertarians, conservative Christian activists, atheists, UFO conspiracists, all kinds of people. They have time to hold these meetings, air grievances, get riled up, demand justice, etc. The world is against them, they have to fight all the bad guys trying to ruin everything. Life is a struggle against some villainy that must be defeated, that lurks behind every corner. Men/women/liberals/conservatives/religious people/atheists/meat eaters/the gov't/authority/cops/aliens are responsible for all the bad things that happpen.

I don't know where they get the energy. If I had their energy, I'd clean the fridge.

Underwater Bystander: I've gone most of my life without thinking about gender issues. I just try to treat everyone around me with dignity and assume that's enough.

Why do these people care so much?

Because there are quite a few laws and regulations stacked against men. Just think about custody and child support, in many cases courts default to giving child support to the mother despite the man being the better choice. This is based on the nebulous idea that mothers are vital at raising children and men are trivial. Or you could look at the fact that (where I live) only about 30% of women work full time yet for some reason there are constantly laws being proposed that at least 40% of (higher) management positions in (semi-)public corporations need to be reserved for women. Or the fact that men are more likely to be homeless, work minimum wage jobs (Where are the women demanding to have equal opportunity working in trash collection? Is that job not good enough for them?), die on the job, face a burn-out etc. Men are likely to be laughed at when they claim a woman attacked them, let alone when they make a rape claim (the first Women's Shelter was opened in 1974, the first Men's Shelter in 2004).

I have no idea what position the people in the article want to promote (as tfa was incredibly light on details about what points were made during the lecture) but there are legitimate reasons for a men's right movement. Just the fact that the idea of a men's right movement is good for a few laughs should be an indicator about how seriously the position of men is taken by society.

fluffy2097: I wish we could move feminism away from nebulous ideas like male privilege and changing pronouns, and towards things like inequality in pay, which is measurable and has a serious impact on women everywhere.

Pay inequality is mostly caused by the jobs women pick. Being the manager of 10 high school teachers pays less than being the manager of 10 petrochemical engineers yet they both go into the statistics as being equal jobs (managerial position). With women being more likely to be employed in education and men more likely to be employed in the petrochemical industry we've just found a reason why men earn more. It has also been found that women without children earn more than men do ($1.08 for every $1 a man makes). What changes when they have children? I guess it could be explained by shifting priorities away from work, reducing their chances for advancement. Or because women gravitate to jobs with a high starting wage but lower wage growth, while men start with low wages but pick jobs with more earning potential after a few years.

Men largely go and hunt, build or achieve things to gauge their ego through accomplishments.

Women largely draw things to them and gather them and control them to gauge their ego through their ability to attract.

The exchange t'was ever thus and ever shall be.

The problem is the ones that are so feminist, they look at you disgustingly for just opening the door for them, or let them go in first, like a gentleman normally does. They treat their boyfriends like shiat thinking they are worthless in all but making babby... and then wonder why even most lesbians wouldn't hang out with them.

Anyone living in Europe who wasn't a serf? Because being extorted for protection money, drafted to fight wars over whose uncle insulted whose grandmother (and basically being sold along with the land) isn't nearly as bad as what other people have experienced.

Exact same job description maybe, but not the exact same job. And no way that it is the exact same job in the same company, unless the woman is a poor negotiator (or has less experience, or works fewer hours or trades some income for secondary benefits) she'll (on average) end up in the same ballpark as the men at the same location.
