You can see his plates in the photo. Why not have an undercover car tail him one day and see if he pulls that shiat again? It's obviously dangerous.

I'd really enjoy seeing a follow-up with that.

In a perfect world, every time someone sees a douche doing this the automatic (and legal) reaction would be to give them a gentle nudge to the back corner of their bumper. Pretty sure that would nip the stupidity in the bud.

FTFY.  It's not like they can do anything about it without a steering wheel.

I think the people who do this are the people whom I wouldn't mind seeing drive over a cliff, anyway. But if one of these douchebags hits an innocent person and kills them...

If you see this and are/have a passenger, it would be hilarious to take the steering wheel away from them, then leisurely turn down a side street away from them ;)

I don't get it. Does hanging your steering wheel out the driver window make you cool or something?

I must be getting old, because it seems just farking stupid to me.

So a detachable steering wheel as a theft deterent? I guess, but if you want it badly enough bring along some vice grips

Heh, back in high school one of my Buds had a 65 Impala, and he got this idea to put one of those foam rimmed steering wheels on it. So, we took the nut off and spent about an hour farting around trying to get it off, bashing it with a rubber mallet and shiat. It wouldn't budge. So he called another dude we knew who's Pop had a auto parts store/machine shop and that guy told us to drive it down there and they'd pop it off with a steering wheel puller. We got about 5 blocks and were on the main drag, and it comes off in my friends hands, and we were doing about 40 or so. So instead of jamming the brakes and stopping, Bud spends about 30 terrifying seconds trying to jam the wheel back down on the spline. He got it stuck down enough to get pulled over to the side of the road so he could bash it back down with the mallet.

That was 32 years ago, and I still remind him of that whenever I see him.

Good times, good times.

Yup it's not like he can follow you or anything.

/had this mental picture of your passenger being able to control his car remotely (cartoon style) with the stolen steering wheel

Not as cool as having a boomerang for a steering wheel, taking it off, throwing it out the window, catching it and placing it back on the steering column as you scramble for your dropped inhaler on the passenger seat floor and crash into a sign and die like Bobby Baccalieri, Sr.

what about guys skitching rides on the back of cars? bumper surfing? going from car to car while in motion on a two lane road? kids been doing that stuff for like 50+ years...the only difference between the stupid fun now and then is that technology has evolved. the idiots are the same.

The only people that I've ever seen claim that it's normal for every teenager/young person to do really stupid shiat are people who are stupid adults. In my experience, people who claim that are projecting.

Not every young person is a dangerous, thoughtless, idiot. You just don't notice the sane ones because they're not the ones on your lawn.

Growing up I never did anything stupidly dangerous like that and no one that I associated with did either. Those are the actions of idiots, not of youth. Idiocy knows no age restrictions.

I must apologise because I think I might have helped to start the ghost riding fad:  When I was a teenager some friends and I would jump in an old International pickup ("The Trashable") on a warm sunny day and point it down a long straight country road, shift into granny low, set the throttle high enough to keep it running and take the truck for a walk. Nobody would be in the cab. The driver would be taking a nap on the roof, I'd be tanning on the hood, my brother would be casually strolling past us on foot; It was very therapeutic...and a bit surreal.

Apparently somebody expounded on that and made it WAAAAY more stupid.

So anyway, sorry.

How about a douche bag in the shape of a Honda?

2013-04-18 10:26:39 PM
Ghost riding at least seems cool in theory. Every kid is curious about it because they see it in action movies. It's just the most of them are smart enough not to try it. Driving without a steering wheel? How the fark do you come to the conclusion that that would be "cool"? Isn't the whole reason driving is fun is the fact that you have control over something big and dangerous? Why would you want to intentionally GET RID of that control?

Depends on the car, but for cars like those, yeah.  It's really no different than giant chrome rims and gold chains.  Attention for attention's sake.

When I'm out driving and it's a straight stretch of road and nobody is around, I'll close my eyes and see how far I can go before freaking out. I've got up to around 20 seconds.
