Your cat hops into your lap, flops up onto your chest and starts to purr...Eli looked up at me as if to say, " it will be ok"..quickly followed by.."Feed me?"

Sooo glad to be here.. TGIT/C... (variation of TGIF).. Feral Fat Fred is starting to lose his winter chunkiness... slightly.. according to neighbors, he romps around the yard, climbs the tree, totally pisses off the squirrels who can't get to the sunflower seeds in the bird feeder, and also totally ignores the doves, who are almost walking on him...  he was zoning in on one a while back, and he and I had some words.. I think he knows that they are off limits.. tossed the catnip bag out to him before I went to work.. neighbors said it got a good workout today... will get some pics shortly...

The other night it got cold but I refused to turn up the thermostat , so I just threw another blanket on the bed when I went to sleep. Usually when I go to bed Gremie will lay down on my stomach and demand pets until I go to sleep or he does. This night I kept getting cold because the blankets were drifting off me, at least I thought they were. I fully awoke at about 3:30 to Gremie with claws in the blanket ,very gently pulling it down. When I tried to grab the blanket he saw that my hands were no longer under the blanket and he rammed his head in to the palm of my hand demanding pets. So I spent about 15 minutes petting him and then I was allowed to go back to sleep.

I'd like to thank everyone once again for your sympathy and concern earlier this week. The other cats know Sammie is gone and are acting weird but I'm sure that will pass soon. We miss him but we also know he is in a better place now.

Now for something completely unrelated - what is everyone's experience with farting cats? Desi farts on a regular basis (like every time you pick him up), but the other 3 usually don't fart much. Last weekend we were unable to get our usual dry food (Iams Weight Control/Hair Ball formula) as the store was out of stock so we grabbed a small bag of Purina One Smartblend Healthy Metabolism. Now everybody is farting!! I actually checked Snuffycat's butt to be sure he didn't have poop stuck in his fur, Mrs Snuffybud did the same to Cisco. We were out of the house Tuesday evening and the when we got home the entire place stunk of cat farts! We're going to switch back to the Iams as soon as they eat the Purina up, but are we going to run into this anytime we think about changing cat food?

Yesterday I was able to send time with a friend who is dying of brain cancer. Before he had to retire for medical reasons he was a zookeeper in Milwaukee caring for the big cats. His favorite are the snow leopards and he had the privilege of being nanny/midwife to a total of 6 snow leopard cubs born at the zoo.

I just wanted to salute him and his love for cats big and small (he always had housecats too). Here is a photo of him caring for a lion:

Smart kitty.. Dinky will lay beside me and pluck at the blanket with a claw until I reach over and pet her.. and she is most persistent... thankfully she doesn't do that when I am asleep.. it would wake me up...

Yes, you probably will.  Their system gets used to a certain food...at least that has been my experience.  I have always used Iams for all my cats.  Not the top of the line, as it has corn in it, but the meat products in it are on the top of the ingredient list at least.  I have heard that you can put Beano into wet food to help with the farts...don't know for sure if it works or not.  Good luck!  (maybe keep a couple of windows cracked open to air it out?)

And now a few pictures. We borrowed a Roomba from one of Mrs. S's co-workers to see how well it works and how well the beasties would take to it.....

i380.photobucket.com

I know it a bit blurry but that's Jack and Cisco sitting on the coffee table watching it run. Jack got quickly bored, Cisco had to watch its every move (from a safe place!), Desi doesn't like it one bit and Snuffycat poked it when it came in his direction!

Snuffy has decided that being a hero and protecting us from the evil Roomba entitles him to break the rules, here he is on the kitchen table. I decided that since he is a hero he gets to stay there, he's still there right now!

Check the ingredients. There's probably a lot of corn or grain in the Purina, which cats can't digest, causing the gassiness. First ingredient should always be a protein, preferably chicken, turkey or lamb (they are easily digested by most cats), Any corn products should either be way down on the list or preferably not in the food at all.

Animals will usually get the farts when you change foods. I'm lucky because Jack and Gremie don't seem to be bothered by this, except the time I got some Beneful dog food for Jack ,after the first week even Gremie wouldn't stay in the same room with him and even Jack couldn't take it anymore ,so we switch back to the cheapo grocery store brand and it took about another week to get the Beneful out of his system.
You might want to get some of the regular stuff now and mix them together so it doesn't go to waste and it should help clear the air, otherwise light some scented candles.

Purina - Turkey, corn gluten meal, poultry byproduct meal, soy flour, brewers rice, whole grain corn, fish meal, soy protein isolate, soybean hulls....
Iams - Chicken byproduct meal, corn meal, corn grits, ground whole grain sorghum, dried beet pulp, chicken, chicken fat, dried egg product.....

Neither sound great but as I said they don't fart as much with the Iams so we'll be switching back. I sure hope BJ's restocks the big bags, otherwise I'll have to find it someplace else. Target has 9 pound bags, Petco, Petsmart and Walmart are all supposed to carry it too.
