Holy crap that tornado is amazing. Lets film it.
Holy crap, a tsunami? Get the camera.
Wow? 4" hail? Lets go see!

Human nature... Cut the guy some slack.

In this post 9/11 world, everything and anything can be compared to the events on 9/11.

It's closer to the Oklahoma City bombing.  Same stuff in fact.

I think it is also what they used on Mythbusters to make a cement mixer disappear.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv2F9y5AD0g

Imagine that ramped up significantly, but also in a residential neighborhood.

Hey, subby...they said it looked like 9/11 there, not that it was another 9/11. I used to live there. I have family and friends there. My dad's best friend knew every single one of the first responders who were killed in the blast. My nephew was blown off his feet almost a mile away while he was playing baseball.

This town was built around the plant. Was it the smartest thing to do? Probably not. But is it smart to build an apartment building 20 feet away from a gas station? Probably not, but it happens.

These are strong people. They're already picking themselves up and helping each other instead of asking everyone else for help. All the snarky dicks just need to put it on hold for a bit and realize that this town is hurting and will be for quite a while.

emersonbiggins: Thebloodpotato: i'm just wondering when alan jackson will come out of the woodwork to find out what we were doing at the time...or to profit off of redneck hysteria

Would it feel less icky if Willie Nelson did it?  He's from the next town north of West.

willie nelson is a clever songwriter and uses metaphors and stuff. alan jackson just shoves a pile of steaming sentiments and rotten guilt trips under people's noses and is like buyyyy thisssss shiat. so yes.

Duke Phillips' Singing Bears: opiumpoopy: Zoning - how does it work?

In towns like West, not very well. I drive through it all the time and the best way to describe it, and all the towns like it that dot 35 South, is "rural sprawl". They're not suburbs because they don't have an urb to sub, but they're not small towns anymore, either.

Yep.
Homesteaders Act of 1862 has unintended consequences.

opiumpoopy: Jim.Casy: I was going to post something snarky, then I read the article. I didn't realize so many people were injured! Why were there this many hanging around next to a poop factory?!

Because in Texas they put an explosive toxic chemical facility right next to a school and an old folks home.

Just like in the third world.

Zoning - how does it work?

Not a big difference this makes I know but....The fertilizer plant was there decades before the town grew around it, its the reason there is a town full of Czech immigrants (and great food) all packed in there.  In order to get further away from the plant the local government would have had to buy land from the local ranchers, which can get expensive, and that would have been long long ago.

I always liked West, its a good break on the long I35 trips.  Good food.

It would be better to compare it to the 1947 Texas City Disaster
