bungle_jr: Carn: cftc: Perhaps you didn't get the memo. Post 9/11 catastrophes are measured in units called a Giuliani.

The Boston Marathon attack probably measures in at 5.6 Giulianis.

The Fertalizer plant explosion looks like about 18.1 Giulianis.

I think we ought to measure it in Courics.

bono?

I think this would definitely beat the record.

PsyLord: I would think that it would be more similar to the PEPCON explosion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KuGizBjDXo

I imagine it was like this one from when I was younger:

"May 1, 1991: Sterlington, Louisiana. An explosion at the IMC operated Angus Chemical Nitro-paraffin Plant Sterlington, Louisiana killed 8 workers and injured 120 other people. There was severe damage to the surrounding community. The blasts were heard more than 8 miles away. "

That plant was literally less than 50 yards from the main road through town.  For all intents and purposes, Sterlingtion was obliterated. (it was a small gas stop town)

orclover: Not a big difference this makes I know but....The fertilizer plant was there decades before the town grew around it, its the reason there is a town full of Czech immigrants (and great food) all packed in there. In order to get further away from the plant the local government would have had to buy land from the local ranchers, which can get expensive, and that would have been long long ago.

I always liked West, its a good break on the long I35 trips. Good food.

Hell yeah. Czech Stop kolaches FTW.

TNel: Oldiron_79: opiumpoopy: Jim.Casy: I was going to post something snarky, then I read the article. I didn't realize so many people were injured! Why were there this many hanging around next to a poop factory?!

Because in Texas they put an explosive toxic chemical facility right next to a school and an old folks home.

Just like in the third world.

Zoning - how does it work?

Im pretty sure the chemical plant was there first and they built the school and old folks home next to it rather than the other way around

Because that makes it sound a lot better.

Well if the city let developers build shiat dangerously close to an already existing chemical plant its the city and the developers who are the assholes and the chemical plant is a victim as much as the persons blown up.

If the chemical plant built itself that close to already existing homes, apts, schools, and hospitals than the chemical company would be the primary assholes(although the city would still get some blame as they didnt block it)

The fertilizer explosions in April of 1947 blew a ship's propeller a half mile away.

The propeller is part of the memorial to the disaster and the nearly 600 people who died.

Maple Street Jerry Mashek Dr , U.S.A. Late summer early spring. A tree-lined little world of front porch gliders, barbecues, the laughter of children, and the bell of an ice cream vendor. At the sound of the roar and the flash of light, it will be precisely 6:43 P.M. 7:50 p.m. on Maple Street  Jerry Mashek Dr.

The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill, and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children, and the children yet unborn. And the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone West, Texas.

lol'd. Quality.

Years ago Larry Bird was a pitchman for Ben-Gay on TV ads.  It always cracked me up at the end; his last line, in his Indiana twang, sounded like:  "You'll like bein' gay!"  I was surprised nobody else heard it that way and yanked it.

Personally with either of those cases the city would be the assholes since they allowed (through zoning) those items to be built right next door to each other.

The Dallas NBC station was saying "bomb" every five minutes last night. At one point they had on an investigator and it was something like this:

Investigator: "The blast was caused by tanks of ammonium nitrate"
News: "Whoa .. that sounds like Oklahoma City!"
Investigator: "Well yes, Timothy McVeigh used ammonium nitrate fertilizer to make his bomb"
News: "Do investigators think there was a bomb at the plant!?"
Investigator: "(pause) ... no"
News: "Then why was so much of this compound there?"
Investigator: "Because it's great for growing crops ..."

Then later ...

News person 1: "We're told this blast was caused by ammonium nitrate the same compound used in the OKC bombing"
News person 2: "We want to reiterate though that we've had no word that there was a bomb in the plant"
News person 1: "But there could have been! We're not going to speculate!"

/ I wanted to throw my remote through the TV at this point

Crapinoleum: tuna fingers: pjbreeze: "There was probably double-digit people standing in front of me..."

Hmmmm, people with 20 fingers and 20 toes in Texas.

Fun fact:  Ten is in the double digits.  Ten.

Fun fact: fingers and toes are anatomically known as "digits", a word that has nothing to do with numbers in this context.  The normal complement of digits is 10 fingers, 10 toes.  Double those digits is 20 fingers and 20 toes. Twenty.  Yes, pjbreeze took liberties with the intended meaning of TFA's quote, in true Fark tradition.  Cue youarethejoke.jpg.

One of the great things about Fark is that it can be hard to tell if someone is being serious. This is one of this is one of those times.
