I made it through exactly three paragraphs of that crap.

Camera ready. The doctor is camera ready. In my heart, I've got to believe if some twit said this to Edward R. Murrow, he'd lean over and put out his cigarette on their forehead. Then again, during a live newscast Murrow asked Liberace when he was going to find a nice girl and get married, so what do I know?

Not a whole lot apparently, I'm pretty sure that Murrow would have stabbed you multiple times for the shiat you just wrote

I couldn't muddle through it either, but I agree with hitting the media with shovels, so I will forgive the writer.

Only if I get to be one the people swinging the shovel.

The writer should be slapped with shovels for being such a godawful preachy asshat.

Or he should be fisted by Tom Wopat. Then again, that happens to everyone eventually anyway.

2013-04-18 10:19:51 AM
And for last night's coverage. The article I read said sixty to seventy deaths. This morning the article I saw said ten to twelve. Bigger numbers mean more page views I guess. Who cares about accuracy.

2013-04-18 10:20:56 AM
The media has been an utter failure, and in some occasions, an actual threat. From their insistence on asking stupid questions to their cheerleading for the Iraq War, they have been a menace to democracy ever since Rupert Murdoch fell off the Vegemite truck.

2013-04-18 10:23:05 AM
Well at least the media reports didn't do stupid stuff liking going on and on and on about dandelions before getting to the goddamn point.

Writer should be slapped with a shovel for opening with three paragraphs of dandelion nonsense.

It is sad, the best coverage has come from the BBC

2013-04-18 10:24:58 AM
Given the high profile of the story and how badly they screwed it up gives you a tiny inkling of how farked up their coverage of every other news story must be.

2013-04-18 10:25:46 AM
Their coverage could have easily helped the bomber if he saw that he was captured on film and people saw that he had the backpack and then didn't (if that was the bomber).

Makes it easier to decide to leave town.

I'd say these are close enough thematically to be counted as a simulpost, yes?  Internet high five.

This would make for great television.

Is today media biatch-day here or what? Just turn it off for 48 hours, I promise you won't miss much. And if you miss anything you'll probably wind up with a brighter outlook on life.

"WAAAH, news sucks! Hey, wanna watch some news?"

Why? They are a publicly funded organization with massive worldwide resources and some pretty outstanding journalists. Hell, nearly all of Al Jazeera is ex-BBC people.

When you make news to be profit motivated, you get what you get.

I mean, I thought maybe at the end he'd circle back to the dandelions, show how there's some kind of metaphor in there in cutting off the poofy things or something, but just... nothing.

Kudos, Jon Dawson!  Awesome way to conjure up more images of violence.  Bashing people with shovels.  Good on you!

Why don't you, Mr. Jon Dawson, relax.  Relax.  Can you feel it.  Feel your toes relaxing... now relaxing your heels.

2013-04-18 10:35:34 AM
I can't exaclty say that I forgive the news for how they handled the whole thing.  It's just like every other tragedy.  There is no point in checking the facts.  There's no time!  There's too much competition!  Someone might beat us to the story!!  We need to report this now, even if it turns out to be false later.

Since every major media outlet is covering the story, every OTHER major media outlet has to also.  This means that if CBS is doing a full 3 hours on it, so do all the others.  Otherwise they look like insensative jerks.  "Look, ABC is showing a sitcom!!  Jerks!!"

Can't have that.

As a side effect, they have to fill all of that time with constant replaying of the same footage, and interviews with first responders and victims.  And they have to ask stupid questions like, "What did you feel like?",  "Were you afraid?",  "What was the explosion like?",  "What kind of injuries did you see?".

So, really, who are you going to blame?  It is what it is.  Competition for ratings.

Can we please ban Subby from Fark for all time for continuing to submit these godawful Jon Dawson steaming piles? If I hear "tax-deduction #N" again I'm going to lose it. I actually agree with his point about the media, but I wasn't able to learn it until suffering through enough terrible writing to make me want to poke my eyes out. It's just not worth it.

We need to ban all of this violent shovel talk now before it gets out of hand and we start talking about hitting people with other things. Things like clubs and pipes or pieces of wood with nails sticking out them...oh god...it's too late!

I rather like aljaz's coverage of things. Sure there's some 'wingnutjerb writers there, but at least it's just some...

The beeb was written off by me for their announcement of the controlled demolition of the wtc building, that was still very visible, and very there, in the live-feed in the background.

Anyone who thinks all you need is love should see the face of the usually nice woman at Kinston Public Utilities when I try to pay my electric bill in hugs.

Idiot. You can't pay your electric bill with hugs. Hugs are only legal-tender for the water bill. You have to pay your electric bill in blow jobs.

It takes a special kind of crap writer to take aim at such low-hanging fruit as the media's output over the last couple of days and still make me hate HIM more than his target.

Too bad everyone focuses on the (admittedly) shiatty article writing instead of the hordes of attention craving pop-psychology con artists that make up a large portion "counselors".

"Hey, I got my psuedo-science degree, I'm ready to go on tv and help people!"

For those of you who haven't seen his piles of shiat in the Sports Tab before, Jon Dawson is a smarmy little prick who thinks he's the second coming of Lewis Grizzard or Dennis Rogers. He writes some of the most banal, trite, and unfunny schlock a newspaper column can muster. And not even a respectable town or paper - no, this is the Free Press in Kinston, a po-dunk tittle taint pimple of a town whose only virtue is giving basketball the gift of Jerry Stackhouse and providing a rest stop halfway between Greenville and New Bern.

I'm honestly surprised the dolt that passes for his editor allowed him to ruin a topic other than sports.
