I want one!

2003-12-27 02:02:28 PM
I hate that they are getting out of providing pay phones, recently my home service with them stopped working, I had to drive all over town to find a pay phone to call them to report my outage! There used to be several just up the street!

No, I don't own a cell phone...don't plan on buying one either, don't get or make enough calls to warrant owning one.

Those things'll take a hell of a lot of physical abuse, too.

One could beat the crap out of a Bell South payphone with an old muffler in a fit of rage over a failed relationship and still be able to call one's drunken buddies to take one to a bar so one could get in a nice brawl.

If one were so inclined...

2003-12-27 02:49:49 PM
I just bought one. Woohoo!

2003-12-27 03:30:49 PM
I would want one, if I hadn't given up my land line since it was obsolete...

2003-12-27 04:59:25 PM
Do you get the key for the coinbox?

2003-12-27 05:13:26 PM
Sign me up for two!

hey ozoneman, try reading the link.

"T" key provided for installation and to open the coinbox door.

ozoneman

Do you get the key for the coinbox?

Payphone features include:
v May be used for residential service access line only.
and is not for general public use as a payphone service
v Coins can be inserted in payphone but does not operate call feature.
v Coinbox door features BellSouth logo.
v "T" key provided for installation and to open the coinbox door.

So does that mean that you would get a key for all coinboxes then?

If not for my Tivo and my fax machine, I'd gladly get rid of my home phone line. I use the mobile for eveything anyway.

2003-12-27 05:18:23 PM
wow
$135
that will never pay for itself.

Although i do suppose it will be the MOST DURABLE PHONE
in the world.

I thought about doing away with a land line, since they cost like 50 bucks a month at least, but don't you have to have a LOT of faith in your cell reception? I heard that your signal can go down just by having an increase in subscribers in your area (i.e., they cut the tower signal radius to accommodate more users).

As for the payphones, wouldn't those things be more germ-laden than Christina Aguilera?

in my opinion you are nuts to rely on your cell phone. how do you no get telemarketing calls on your cell phone if you use that number for all your bills and things? plus i've been plent of places my cell phone will simply not work. Maybe I'm just old fashioned :)

2003-12-27 05:26:48 PM
maybe he is using VoIP and not just cell phone.

2003-12-27 05:27:54 PM
cambie-

telemarketers aren't allowed to call cell numbers. it's one of those little laws that the gov is pretty serious about.

2003-12-27 05:28:03 PM
I only want one if the urine smell and an empty bottle of Schlitz comes with it.

2003-12-27 05:28:38 PM
I've got a payphone in my garage, complete with a bunch on quarters inside of it (don't ask). Only problem is I don't have a key, and a lock-smith friend can't get it open.

2003-12-27 05:29:31 PM
$135.00 ??

I see one down the street for free....be right back.

2003-12-27 05:31:18 PM
If there are no public phones, how the hell am I gonna get out of the Matrix?

2003-12-27 05:31:28 PM
I think I'm buying one as a phone/bank. I don't know how I'd ever get that thing mounted on my wall though.

2003-12-27 05:32:06 PM
You should check these guys out before sending money.

This is not a BellSouth company!!!!

2003-12-27 05:32:18 PM
Your friend isn't much of a lock-smith.

2003-12-27 05:33:28 PM
My lock smith friend is a crowbar.

2003-12-27 05:34:39 PM
The place I work once had banks of phones scattered around the plant-now there is just one by the door.

2003-12-27 05:34:55 PM
Fark sucks, now I seem to need one of these.

2003-12-27 05:36:10 PM
Crowbars? Picking locks is almost embarassingly easy. Be smooth, man. I taught myself to do it in about 2 days. By the way, don't use Masterlocks. Even years out of practice I can pop those in 5 seconds.

2003-12-27 05:45:42 PM
My redbox won't work anymore?!! Oh no!

2003-12-27 05:57:09 PM
Whaddya mean payphones don't require quarters??

How would you use one then!?

2003-12-27 06:00:26 PM
OregonVet the bellsouth pioneers are a charity/service organization of bell employees. suspect this is a money raiser for them and a tax write off for the company.

they just took out the one at work. much to the annoyance of the employees and soon the office as the incoming calls will now go there.

2003-12-27 06:02:35 PM
"You should check these guys out before sending money.

Go to the root of the link: BellSouth Pioneers

These guys seem on the level.
"The BellSouth Pioneer Volunteers represent over 90,000 active and retired employees from each of the nine states of the BellSouth organization. The Pioneers support a broad base of community programs centering on education, the environment, health, human services and life enrichment."

BellSouth biatcherizes ANYONE who thinks about using their logo or name without authorization, and these guys are slinging the logo around, offering membership to employees (and only employees) and using such classics as "Copyright 2003 BellSouth. All Rights Reserved. Legal Notices and Privacy Statement" Either these guys have gone unnoticed while being the most brazen rip-off artists ever, or they are legit...

2003-12-27 06:08:41 PM
glad we got that cleared up.

2003-12-27 06:20:38 PM
I got rid of my landline 6 months ago. About 3 weeks ago, TMobile "upgraded" a tower in my area, right in the center of metro Seattle. I haven't had service since. And there is no eta for the fix.

About a week ago I went through the nightmare of switching cell providers and keeping my old number. Let me tell you. Don't do it right now and if you must, don't switch to AT&T. I'm still waiting for service.

If not for the payphones near my apartment, I wouldn't have been able to let them know I was having a problem.

2003-12-27 06:21:03 PM
There is a pretty good array of pay phones on eBay. I want a booth like the TARDIS.

2003-12-27 06:24:57 PM
Just ordered me one.

payphone pwn3d!!!

2003-12-27 06:25:19 PM
2003-12-27 05:32:06 PM OregonVet: Not to beat a dead horse, but I can't resist. The BellSouth Pioneers are a legit service organization associated with retired (and active?)BellSouth employees. In a past career, I coordinated community service outings with them.

Didn't know they sold stuff online though.

2003-12-27 06:26:50 PM
Bling-bling that goes ring-ring.

2003-12-27 06:28:13 PM
(Payphones don't actually require a quarter to operate but your friends don't know that)

Yeah, because your friends probably know that payphones went up to 35 cents years ago.

(well, at least in my area they did.)

2003-12-27 06:58:22 PM
I want one for the garage/shop. It would be perfect. Of course, I'd also like a garage/shop to put it in.

2003-12-27 07:09:28 PM
shiat, Pay Phone calls are 50 cents here, oooCurTooo. I think the point is that it takes QUARTERS, but "a quarter" is the symbol of the traditional Pay phone.

It sounds like a "Cool" way to save a few bucks. Instead of a piggy bank.. :)

2003-12-27 07:24:04 PM
Gave into temptation and bought one for myself.

Odd thing is, 40-50 years from now they'll be museum pieces. Get'em while they last.

2003-12-27 07:29:27 PM
Back in my day, sonny, pay phones were a dime! You may think an 80 year old wrote the foregoing sentence, but really I am a mere 40. Here in this state where I live, it hasn't been a dime since the 70's.

2003-12-27 07:31:43 PM
The lack of payphones is why I had to buy a cell phone. I don't even use my 50 minutes a month. But when you need a phone, you need a phone.

2003-12-27 07:38:50 PM
But do you get an out-of-date phonebook with all the important pages ripped out too?
