(Politico)   The media's marathon meltdown. Worse than Chernobyl and sadder than Wolf Blitzer's Jeopardy score, but like a terrible car accident, you can't help but look on in horror at the state of the media   (politico.com) divider line 21

The media is just selling a product and sometimes news is involved.

We get what we deserve.  You know why CNN airs celebrity nonsense?  Because when they put up solidly researched segments on economics, nobody watches.  When they put up a piece on whatever the hell Lindsey Lohan is doing these days, people watch.

We have met the enemy, and they are us.

One of my favorite comments from Twitter:

Mark Mardell @BBCMarkMardell

CNN very postmodern right now - fragmented versions of reality from multiple unreliable narrators

I was shocked to hear CNN had even bothered to cover the bombing. I've long since given up on it as a source of actual news, since 99% of the headlines usually involve a celebrity of some kind.

It's congress and their corporate overlords who benefit the most from keeping us terrorized. Including the corporate owned media.

Correction...  ESPECIALLYthe corporate owned media.

Did people not notice that the "news media" warped into the "frantically grabbing attention because TERROR BOOM SPLODEY COOL! conglomerate" in 1991?

Add in Pyrodex available over the counter at Dick's Sporting Goods and Wal*Mart, and you've got everything you need to replicate the bombs used in Boston.  Some assembly required.

One great big festering neon distraction,
I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied.

Learn to swim.
Learn to swim.
Learn to swim.
Learn to swim.

Cause I'm praying for rain
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way.
I wanna watch it all go down.
Mom, please flush it all away.
I wanna see it go right in and down.
I wanna watch it go right in.
Watch you flush it all away.
Time to bring it down again.
Don't just call me pessimist.
Try and read between the lines.
I can't imagine why you wouldn't
Welcome any change, my friend.

It's easy to point the finger at CNN, FOX, etc., but the fact remains that viewership is their only real goal.  Any truth that is part of the story is nice, but certainly not necessary for them to run their businesses.

We now have so many options of where to get our information.  It's up to us as consumers to be able to think critically enough to be able to determine what's worth our time, and what's not.  If people stopped paying attention to the vapid garbage broadcast by these stations, eventually it will go away.

gja: The media, as a whole, are farktwits. Staffed with trogs who otherwise would be asking "want fries with that?" (with deepest apologies to fast-food purveyors)

See, that's what happens when you hire people with journalism degrees and have them write about stuff they have no comprehension on, instead of hiring people who are experienced in those areas and just coaching them on how to write effectively to a mass audience.

Pants full of macaroni!!: karnal: Within a few years all media will be state-owned and then we will all get the news that they see fit to show us.

I thought all media already was state-owned except for Fox News.

/oh wait, that's Soros-owned, isn't it

In an interview on MSNBC's 'Morning Joe,' Joe Biden praised and thanked MSNBC for their part in bringing about gun control.

I imagine them a lot like the precogs in Minority Report
