Yike. google sat map in TFA shows a big frigging tank on the site - maybe 80-ish feet across and 30-40 feet tall.

Silly me

2013-04-17 10:03:11 PM
Apparently local radio scanner chatter suggests there was a fire at the plant, firefighter/hazmat teams responded, and then the thing blew up in their face.  "Multiple firefighters down".

Could be a rumor.. but news is breaking.

That would probably be anhydrous ammonia.   Most everything else in fertilizer comes in a powdered form.

Does this mean gas is gonna go back up to $4 a gallon?

2013-04-17 10:08:33 PM
Ok, stop with the attempted murders and the explosions.  I've had my fill for this month.

2013-04-17 10:08:37 PM
Local news is reporting firefighters injured, possibly in secondary explosions. Serveral surrounding buildings, including a middle school are also on fire.

2013-04-17 10:08:44 PM
Wow... they just said 9 evac helocopters are landing at the high school football field.

So there was a fire at the plant, FD responded and put it out. Later the fire reappeared (wasn't really out before), and they came back, and it exploded as they were working on it? I'm confused by the wording. Any chance everyone made it to a safe distance?

Is CNN reporting any arrests yet?

huh. I never realized how closely I resembled mr. koresh at that time

I saw this come across my Twitter feed as breaking news, but I didn't think it would end up here.  I doubt seriously there's any connection between this and the 20th anniversary of the Branch Davidian raid.

MightySlam: Wow... they just said 9 evac helocopters are landing at the high school football field.

Apparently a nursing home was nearby.  Makes the casualty count likely higher.

I can't remember the last newsflash that was actually good news

Given that we're dealing with the aftermath of what was almost certainly domestic terrorism in Boston, this is a really weird synchronicity. All we're missing is something related to Ruby Ridge.

2013-04-17 10:11:24 PM
At the very least the plant would have been evacuated because of the fire. But the fact that multiple buildings were destroyed and others quite a distance away were on fire makes it sound like it could still be bad.

I wonder if this will be as loud or big as the PEPCON explosion?
