That losing team really blows. I would expect a score like that if they played the Yankees or a MLB team, but not another random high school. Oh yeah, hitting 11 batters doesn't help your cause.

The first league cricket game I played in for my college in the UK resulted in a 300-run win (us 360/4, them 60 all out).  I don't know whether the other side was more embarrassed by getting beaten that badly, by getting beaten after recruiting two ringers, or by having one of said ringers getting dismissed first ball by the decidedly unskilled yours truly.

At some point don't you simply tell your team to put the bat on your shoulder and take the strikeout.  Or bunt only.  Something.  I mean a score like that benefits no one.  Call off the dogs on offense at least.

They had 11 hit batters and 13 walks.  The losing team had no pitching whatsoever.

You can still swing at balls. Hell, you can still swing at HBP and have it called a strike.

The coach asked the ump if he could have his players bunt and step on the plate?!? Why didn't he just tell his players to farkin' whiff at every pitch?

Umpire is a dick for not loosening up the strike zone and helping out.

That's when you call Naked Gun strikes.

Because any of that is insulting to both teams.

A few years ago a team in my softball league was losing by something like 29-0 after two innings (or something ridiculous like that). After they came up in the top of the third and got their three outs the opposing coach just motioned them to keep batting until the hour time limit ran out, which was maybe ten more minutes by that point. Which I thought was pretty cool, the game was long out of hand, may as well let them get some extra bp that way.

At a certain point you pull your best players. After that, you make the players you have left play other positions. After that, you politely ask the other team to forefit.

Crimenittly!

I agree with the folks saying, "the winning coach could have done something to get out" - that said, he honestly did try to stop the game.  The home plate ump should have called it, or at least called the other coach over and suggested a forfeit.

But the, I remember being a student at a non-Catholic religious prep school with a start-up athletic program, and we couldn't win a game to save our lives, either.  In any sport.  Interestingly, that school has since gone from having the highest SATs in the city to being a school where rich-but-not-particularly-bright kids prepare to play football or cheer on football players at University of Georgia, Auburn, or Clemson.

I remember in college one year our team was throttling some poor school so badly that they decided to have the clock run continuously for the 4th quarter and about halfway through the quarter both teams just pulled their guys off the field and let the clock run out.

"If we injure enough of their team, then they'll have to forfeit!"

2013-04-18 12:57:13 AM
i guess the strategy of 'we'll let them get tired from scoring tons of runs and running around the bases and then we'll clean their clocks in the later innings!' didn't work out.

I sometimes ran the scoreboard for our high school basketball games. If it was a particularly pointless and mis-matched game my friend and I would fiddle with the clock to shave some time off. You'd be surprised how few people notice anything wrong when the clock ticks down 7:01, 7:00, 5:59, 5:58...

There's no clock in baseball. Games (and individual innings) could theoretically go on foreverandever, score climbing ever higher and higher, if it weren't for things like injuries and needing sleep and having a finite number of players and all that. If you keep hitting, the game keeps going.

Strange cultural differences in sport - I can see resting your first team and giving your reserves a chance to play a "real" game and avoiding getting your first team hurt, or playing people out of position where they might make mistakes because they aren't used to it (but you never know when an injury or change in personnel might need them to move in a more competitive game). But not trying against the other team or deliberately playing badly against them I would see as deliberately insulting, it would be the sort of thing to trigger a bench clearing brawl - fine we suck compared to you, but that doesn't justify disdain on that level from the opponents.

This was not a fluke; the losing team may not be totally abysmal.

"The Hornets routinely have blown out far less experienced Harvest Prep teams in the past, scoring more than 40 runs multiple times. Boyer apologetically calls in the scores and prefers to give as little information as possible. Some newspapers refuse to print the scores."

Similar stories in football and basketball.  Something's odd about this school.

These arent 8 year olds, they are old enough to handle this.  I promise you that none of them went home and cried themselves to sleep because their self esteem hurt.

This is natures way of telling someone that maybe they should sing in the show choir.
