In the now famous picture, that red thing in Mr Arredondo's hand is the injured man's femoral artery, which Arredondo is keeping pinched shut.  Incredible.

There were many "heroes" to come out of Monday, but this guy is arguably one of the most famous ones to come out of it.

See, here's the thing I don't get about the crucifixion of this guy. He ran from what appears to be a group of very injured people. Has it occurred that he may be rushing to find some EMTs to direct to this group? Chaos on the ground, probably a lot of disorientation abound, guy sees a bunch of people in terrible shape, realizes they need some help and rushes out to find people with medical training?

I understand why the BPD/FBI want to question him, but the stuff I've seen online about the "runner" (and from news organizations *cough cough* CNN *cough cough*) have never even given this idea a thought.

Well CNN is completely full of shiat. I tried watching some earlier to get caught up and my brain damn near killed itself with the insipidness of their coverage.

My thinking and this is purely speculation: He moved quicker than anyone else, which could potentially say he was expecting the boom. He was also at ground zero and most certainly had residue and other forensic evidence on his person. Alternatively, there is the possibility he had the bomb and didn't know he had the bomb. Maybe the bomber asked him to hold the bag and left the area.

Yeah. Sure it was a bunch of foreign nationals who were motivated by a hatred of the United States culture and their Cold War political posturing in the middle east who committed the bloodiest attack on American Soil, creating a greater loss of life than even Pearl Harbor, but you keep just farking that chicken.

If you watch the youtube video upthread, it sounded like someone asked him what he's holding, he showed them and then they asked if they could get a picture or two with him holding it outstretched.  He isn't making it a relic, hell the people taking the picture probably weren't either, but it does make a fantastic photo.

Just speculating. Only if he was holding it, but he may have set it down. His clothes are shredded, but he looks otherwise intact and there are others who were close to the blast who appear relatively unscathed. The pics capture bomb site #1 from a pretty good angle, you can see where it blew.

It's really incredible, and there is incredible kudos to Mr. Arredondo, that unnamed Asian lady and the others who helped Jeff Baumann Jr. that the dead did not number four. His legs were gone. Just gone.

I UNDERSTAND THAT. But it was the buzz in the earlier threads ( before the link was changed to cover the ARRESTED/NOT ARRESTED debacle), hence the reason to post. Either way, they are interesting pics of ground zero and will certainly help the FBI get the farkstick who did this. I don't think the dude in the middle of the explosion was part of it either.

He probably has a mild case of Essential Tremor. Notice his right had is a lot shakier then his left. That is a common trait in ET. It's more noticeable on the dominant side. Stress and cold exacerbate the shaking quite a bit in ET. My hand would be shaking like that all the time if it weren't for propranolol.

I'm only speculating, but this could be his redemption.
He lost a son in the war. No matter what his views on the war, there has to be a certain amount of self blame there (why didn't I talk him out of it?). He then reacted very badly, compounding his family's turmoil. This 'double whammy' may have lead to his other son's suicide. Even if it didn't, any father would always wonder if it did. He becomes an anti-war activist to prevent other fathers from experiencing a similar tragedy. Along the way he's brutalized by thugs. As noble as his activism is, it's an uphill battle at best and, considering his emotional involvement, it must be frustrating as hell. Now another tragedy has given him an opportunity to save another person's life directly. I think this guy needed a win. He was given an 'enemy' that he was able to face and beat the living shiat out of (figuratively). I hope that when the dust clears and the cameras go away he's able to find some peace. He did something that the majority of us would be too shocked, scared or squeamish to do and that makes him a hero.
Now somebody buy him and his wife one of those six month around the world luxury cruises so they can escape the media and heal. If the internet can buy some rich politician a sports car, we can surely give this guy a well deserved vacation.

I saw the video. The guy with the camera asked him to hold it up like that.

You'll notice i said "they're" (I'll even highlight it for you). It's like the media's 9-11 frenzy all over again. I wonder what non-related country we're going to invade this time? Guatemala?

Dude, in case you haven't noticed. We go to war in other countries when we're hit by foreign terrorists. We...well I don't know what exactly we do when we're hit by domestic terrorists. It's been awhile since Clinton.

So far, this is probably a domestic terrorist, either for political means or just cause "fark it, let's blow shiat up"

Not everyone can overcome their lizard brain either.  When something terrible happens and you get injured, for a lot of people the Weeners is to flee, get out of dodge, find safety.  It kept our ancestors alive to breed another day.

I highly doubt the cowards that did this stuck around to be in the blast.

The guy has been through hell no doubt.  My son is an Army cadet in college right now.  Tremendously proud of him, but fearful for what he'll face once he's a real live officer.  I'd take a bullet for him.  I'd lose my farkin' mind if I lost him.  I'd gut-howl to the heavens if I lost him.Times that by 2?  Unimaginable. He stepped up and ran into danger rather than away from it. That is the textbook definition of hero. Also, the MA National Guardsmen who did the same - heroic efforts as well. I've gotten most of the same crisis, first responder and crisis managment training as those guys, but not the real world combat experience. Mine has been classroom.  I've asked myself how I would react.  I'd like to think heroically but I hope never to find out. These guys are outstanding.

I'm going to step into cynicism and  wonder how long before someone wonders if he has a green card or if he staged this for any reason.  Because he's been an anti-war activitist, surely they can find something to smear on him, right?

I agree with the sentiments you have so eloquently shared, and I too hope that this man, who has been through so much, is able to come to peace with himself - for that is the only true "peace".

The reason I said "NEVER ask that question" above is because of personal experience.

I can't imagine what it would be like to live with the circumstances of his second son's suicide, but I think his anti-war demonstrations were probably guiding him in the general direction back towards the land of the living.  However, I think what he did in the aftermath of the bombing might short-circuit and dramatically accelerate his healing.  Anyway, I hope so.

It floored me to learn that the cowboy-hatted man in the now-(in)famous 'pic #8' was the same guy I've seen time and again around my neck-o'-th'-woods with his anti-war truck (and, more recently, his makeshift Newtown memorial). I had also heard about his son Alex, for whom an area post office has been rechristened, from various mentions in the local fishwrapper, but I hadn't quite made the connexion between the two (which, retrospective whoops).

If I see this man in person again, I'll be sure to buy him like eleventy beers (or whatever his preference may be).

Ugh. I'm sure the rest of his leg is nothing but pulped muscle and exposed bone, from what little I can see. No thanks on the rest of the pic...

It is the kind of image that takes a minute to process.  One can imagine how an injury like that would appear, but in reality it looks quite a bit different.  And once you wrap your head around it, you'll be seeing it for a good while after.  I did not sleep last night.

I'm glad Mr. Arredondo survived his tragedies so that he could be there to help others survive theirs.

I'm going to go look at pictures of puppies now.

It's still not as bad as that one picture from early on in the Iraq war...child victim of a US bombing run that was missing a part of his head, but his face was totally intact and very peaceful looking.  This is why I only click on AlJazeera *English*, because the standard version doesn't scrub things.

At least the grey man in the current pic is still alive.

Yeah, he shows the crumpled flag during the interview, when mentioning that all his flags were blown away. Later, a reporter asks him to hold it up so they can take photos. He's so dazed they have to ask a second time to get him to hold it the right way around.

You really should watch the video. The guy is half rambling and shaking violently. I know I'll never be a reporter. If I'd come across him I'd have marched him of to get checked by a doctor and then taken him for a couple of dozen stiff drinks.
