That's Helen Keller, genius.

In retrospect, this was probably red flag No. 1. But she was 22 and hadn't had too many job interviews, so I thought it seemed reasonable.

Rarely has an individual overcome such mountanous obstacles to attain such a vaulted place in history.

Helen Keller was an award winning author, respected philosopher and brilliant orater, in spite of the fact that she was a woman.

In China, a deaf dance troupe has been putting on the acclaimed Thousand Hands Guanyin performance for years, which was notably featured in the film Samsara.

I would love to see a documentary about Ann's fateful flight to attempt to cross the Atlantic. It would be interesting to see how a blind and deaf pilot made it as far as she did.

Basic humorous conflation that decades of separation allows us to make light humor around. There's some nasty evil jokes around these two people so be glad we just play with the Clerks mistake. Reading cheese graters, leaving the plunger in the toilet, and having lunch with Hitler are much darker jokes we avoid by staying light.

We also conflate Madonna and Lady Gaga or Iggy Pop.

I used to think that it was an honest to FSM meme until playing a game of Apples to Apples. When we had to write how old Anne Frank was when she died out of 4 of us two people wrote down 80/70 years old. When myself and the other player presented our cards both saying 14 one of the other players paused and said "Oh. I think I was thinking of Helen Keller."

2013-04-17 04:44:47 PM
I worked as a maintenance man at a school for the blind.I was in charge of cleaning the dormitories for the kids. These long strings ran down the lengths of the hallways. The kids used them to find their rooms. They didn't have room numbers in the conventional sense.Instead, there were five beads on the strings near the room doors. There were two types of beads, square and circular. It was a binary system with the square bead representing 1 and the circular bead representing 0.So, a kid might have a room number of 01010, or Room 62.

I was on call day and night. The kids were always puking and shiatting in the halls because they'd get upset stomachs from the terrible food then lose their way to bathroom in the middle of the night.I always thought blind people maneuvered around as easily as a cat lands on its feet, as long as the blind person knew the area somewhat.Nope.Terrible navigators.Lots of blood nose smears on the cinder block walls from where they'd collide.Lots of head bumps too.

Now, I'm not saying it did or didn't cause their blindness, but damn if the students were masturbating nearly constantly.I guess it's harder to resist the temptation when you know the person next to you can't see.I think they thought they were being quiet about it, but it sounded like someone was constantly trying to start a fire with two wet sticks around there.I had to quit because I couldn't stop cracking up.I burst a blood vessel in my eye laughing so hard once.

Even if it is a wive's tale, you'd think you'd ease off just to be sure.

spentmiles: I worked as a maintenance man at a school for the blind.I was in charge of cleaning the dormitories for the kids.

I got more than half way through this before I looked up and saw who posted it.  Bravo, Spentmiles, bravo.

It's amazing that she was not only able to beat the rap for axe murdering her parents but that she was able to overcome her handicaps to sew the first american flag after escaping the nazis. But to then become a world famous aviator? No wonder she was chosen to be on the first dollar coin in the US!

/Did I forget anyone?

That's Helen Keller, genius.

In retrospect, this was probably red flag No. 1. But she was 22 and hadn't had too many job interviews, so I thought it seemed reasonable.

Leave the guy alone and give him a hot cocoa sampler.

No, that was Margaret Thatcher.

RexTalionis: In China, a deaf dance troupe has been putting on the acclaimed Thousand Hands Guanyin performance for years, which was notably featured in the film Samsara.

They are truly gifted.  But in all fairness, not being able to hear Chinese music is an unfair advantage for the dancers.

Jack's Smirking Revenge: wildcardjack: TheHighlandHowler: FlashHarry: what's the origin of the anne frank/helen keller meme?

Know your meme

Basic humorous conflation that decades of separation allows us to make light humor around. There's some nasty evil jokes around these two people so be glad we just play with the Clerks mistake. Reading cheese graters, leaving the plunger in the toilet, and having lunch with Hitler are much darker jokes we avoid by staying light.

We also conflate Madonna and Lady Gaga or Iggy Pop.

Between jokes about Helen Keller and the Challenger explosion, middle school was a funny time for me.

/yeah, I'm old.
